It is just ten years since the fall of the Berlin wall and the beginning of the huge German re-unification project. No country in Europe has poured money into new infrastructure or equipment like the German government. The manifestations of these investments are now bearing fruit! Travel with Ticket to Ride to view Germany's railways as they enter the new millennium. This three part documentary series starts with the south-from Kln to the Swiss border and across to Austria and the Czech Republic. We travel down the Rhein still the major freight and passenger artery - but not for much longer- to view the trains which pass day and night in this international corridor. The best views are to be had from the river itself and Ticket to Ride takes you there from Kln to Mainz. Then it's on to the financial capital Frankfurt the hub of the InterCity passenger business which has a local transport network of breathtaking efficiency. The route of the high speed line which will link Kln and Frankfurt is examined from the air and the ground. Then from Frankfurt on to Ludwigshafen to look at German rail freight a short hop to Karlsruhe the city which pioneered the concept of running trams on main lines and to the beautiful city of Freiburg where passenger and freight traffic stream past on their way to Switzerland. As an indulgence we have lunch at the Feldschlossen brewery just in Switzerland before heading for the Bodensee. Then across the sole of Holiday Germany to the capital of Bavaria-Munich. Munich is Germany's favourite city and Ticket to Ride shows you why! Time for a look at the international passenger and freight traffic heading for Austria then on to Regensberg and Wrtzburg. Back through Stuttgart to look at 'Star 21' and across to Saarbrcken where we ride the Bombardier trams. On this tour of Southern Germany you will see the very latest technology ICT tilting trains double deck commuter stock modern freight vehicles and class 101 locomotives plus some old favourites like the class 103 the icon of the German Railways in the 1970's. 'Ticket To Ride - Hong Kong & China' is in a series of guides to places of interest to business travellers tourists and those with an interest in all forms of transport but particularly rail travel. Each programme tells a little of the story of the area or country visited highlights features of particular interest but concentrates on helping potential visitors get around where posible using public transport. The guide should appeal to all travellers who wish to be a little more intrepid on their next visit to meet the locals and to get to know the area. The guide is in sections and in Hong Kong covers: Getting from the airport to the 'down town area' using the new Airport Express navigate our way through the mainly British built MTR (Mass Transit Railway) travel by double deck tramcar through the streets of Hong Kong Island explore the New Territories using the KCR (Kowloon Canton Railway) sail on perhaps the worlds most famous ferry-The Star Ferry enjoy the views from The Peak courtesy of the Peak Tramway and view the famous harbour. You can also watch in amazement the activities at the KCR freight terminal at Hung Hom and finally travel into the Peoples Republic to visit Guangdong (Canton) on the ktt 'InterCity' through train. Cardiff capital city of the principality of Wales is a vibrant centre whether you are a tourist sports fan or a rail enthusiast. The city and its hinterland abounds with rail activity: Long distance express passenger trains from First Great Western and Virgin Trains inter regional services from Wales and West and naturally local commuter services. Rail Freight is abundant! Much of it is steel traffic to and from the Welsh CORUS facilities and raw materials from the docks. But there is also wagon load and containers from Freightliner's recently opened terminal at Wentloog (SWIFT). Ticket to Ride was at Canton when the first of the EWS Spanish built class 67 left for acceptance trials. By the time the film was completed in spring 2001 these units were a common sight. Newport is an important traffic centre particularly for the docks. We catch the activity before pressing on to Llanwern and the Severn Tunnel. The English side of the estuary is very different. We visit Bristol Parkway have a quick look at the work in progress on the new station there and at the recently opened Royal Mail centre then it's onto Filton Abbey Wood a station built especially for the new MOD procurement centre of the same name. We look at Avonmouth and the freight that it generates and Clifton with the famous Brunel suspension bridge that dominates the gorge at this point before arriving at Templemeads. This is the major interchange station of the southwest and is currently being expanded. Train operator Thames Trains has joined the action with its new service to Oxford. From Bristol we make an excursion west to the seaside resort of Weston super Mare and call in at the Mecca for German railway modellers 'Model Masters' to see their newly refurbished shop and layout before heading back towards Bristol. On the way we look at the Portishead branch that is to be re-opened to rail traffic and look at the freight potential that it offers. As a rail based 'day out' the old Bristol dock and maritime museum at the floating harbour is worth consideration. It's still rail connected and has a nice collection of pre 1940 wagons on show. Then it's back to Templemeads which will be the starting point for part two of this rail excursion. Part two Bristol to Portsmouth is by far the the more photogenic section Bath the Avon and Wylye Valleys rural Wiltshire and Hampshire interrupted by heavy haul at Westbury and the ceaseless activity at Southampton.
Explore the Algarve. We first visit the capital of Portugal Lisbon- travel over the new Tagus rail crossing and the ferry which links the rail network south of the Tagus with all points north. Detailed maps help the viewer understand the complex rail geography of the area. Then we head south from CP's Barreiro terminus towards the Algarve. After a look at one of Europe's most south westerly towns -Lagos- we join the driver of a class 1800 locomotive for the journey to Tunes. This close relative of the English Electric BR class 50 will travel through orange groves and pass lemon trees storks and flamingos on its journey east. We undertake a journey through Western Poland to look at both the PKP at work and to visit the Wolsztyn Steam Trust. Entry to Poland is via Berlin and then by local train. We make a trip to Leszno on a service steam train and then spend a little time on this important line while the PKP goes about its daily business. Revenue earning freight is still steam hauled around Wolsztyn. We journey with the crew of TY 45 20 with a 1 400 tonne trip freight from the marshalling yard at Zbaszynek

Travel with the drivers of an Express Passenger Locomotive (EP08) Poznan to Warsaw.
