Smallville: Complete Season 1 | DVD | (13/10/2003)
from £23.99
| Saving you £33.00 (137.56%)
| RRP The venerable Superman mythos gets a 21st-century updating in the imaginative and engaging TV series Smallville. The premise of the show--Superman as a teenager--takes up just a few pages in Superman's very first comic-book appearance (in Action Comics back in 1938), but producers Alfred Gough and Miles Millar flesh out that period by portraying young Clark Kent (Tom Welling) not as the noble Superman-in-waiting, but as an average teen with some not-so-ordinary supernatural powers, including incredible strength and heat vision (Clark hasn't lifted up, up, and away as of yet). Clark's desire to fit in with his peers and make sense of his extraordinary abilities grounds him in very realistic and identifiable terms for the series' primarily under-25 audience, as does his appealing and tentative romance with Kristen Kreuk as Clark's dreamgirl Lana Lang. But Smallville also strikes gold when it takes a turn towards more comic-book territory, as evidenced by the parade of shape-shifting killers and other outlandish antagonists (many generated, in one of the series' most ingenious notions, by the same devastating meteor shower that brought the infant Clark to Earth) that Clark must harness his powers to face and defeat. Gough and Millar, along with their capable cast (which includes Michael Rosenbaum as a young and already bald-pated Lex Luthor, and Annette O'Toole and John Schneider as the Kents) manage to pull off the precarious high-wire act of combining science fiction with coming-of-age drama to create this highly watchable programme. --Paul Gaita

| RRP Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones star as Gus McCrae and Woodrow Call, ageing cowboys and former Texas rangers, who organise a 2,500 mile cattle drive for one last great adventure in this excellent 1989 miniseries adaptation of Larry McMurtry's novel. The best friends, who steal the herd from a gang of Mexican cattle rustlers, drive their herd from Texas to Montana, battling horse thieves, angry Indian tribes, and a renegade half-breed killer named Blue Duck (Frederic Forrest) on a mission of revenge. The excellent cast also includes Robert Urich as cardsharp and former Ranger Jake Spoon, Anjelica Huston as McCrae's old flame Clara Allen, Danny Glover, Ricky Schroder, Diane Lane, Chris Cooper, DB Sweeney, Steve Buscemi, and even a small role for author Larry McMurtry. Australian director Simon Wincer shows a tremendous capacity for balancing sweeping drama and intimacy against the gorgeous landscape of the American Southwest, giving a grandly epic feel to the film despite its small-screen target and limited budget, and for forging memorable characters of even the smallest supporting parts. The heart of the drama belongs to McCrae and Call, memorably etched by Duvall and Jones as the last of the range romantics. In the age of revisionist Westerns, this excellent cattle-drive drama nicely maintains an old -fashioned feeling while still showing the dark side of the American West. --Sean Axmaker, Amazon.com

Lola Versus | Blu Ray | (12/11/2012)
from £9.98

| RRP Lola Versus captures the obsessions, confusions, and neuroses of contemporary urban middle class consciousness. Lola (Greta Gerwig) thinks her life is perfect--until her fiancé Luke (Joel Kinnaman) breaks up with her mere weeks before their wedding. What follows is a comic floundering, what might be a 21st-century update to 1970s "finding herself" movies like An Unmarried Woman, only the men are just as sensitive and self-absorbed as the women. Fortunately, the filmmakers keep a sense of perspective and humour about it all, and just as fortunately the movie is grounded in the unusual presence of its lead actress. Gerwig is strikingly beautiful, a fusion of a 1920s movie star and a Renaissance Madonna, but projects ordinariness. When juxtaposed with typical movie stars, she seems awkward and goofy, but when she's the centre of a movie, it all becomes suffused with her sweet approachability. The rest of the cast gets in tune, including Bill Pullman and Debra Winger as Lola's earnest, supportive parents and Hamish Linklater as Lola's best friend, Henry. The ending feels a bit tacked on, as if suddenly trying to harness the movie to a particular agenda, but the rest of Lola Versus enjoyably spins and wobbles in ways that resist easy labelling. --Bret Fetzer
