In Paul Verhoeven's Hollow Man, Kevin Bacon plays a bad boy egotistical scientist who heads up a double-secret government team experimenting with turning life forms invisible. How do we know he's a bad boy? Because he (a) wears a leather overcoat, (b) compares himself to God, (c) drives a sports car, and (d) spies on his comely next door neighbour while eating Twinkies. Sadly, this is the most character development anyone gets in this slightly undernourished action/sci-fi thriller, which does boast some amazing special effects along with some amazingly ridiculous plot twists. After experimenting rather ruthlessly on a menagerie of lab animals, Bacon finally cracks the code that will turn the invisible gorillas, dogs and so on, back into their visible forms. Does it work on humans? Faster than you can say "six degrees," Mr Bacon appoints himself human guinea pig, strapping down for an injection of fluorescent-coloured serum. Thanks to some phenomenal, seamless and Oscar-worthy computer effects, Bacon is indeed rendered invisible, organ by organ, vein by vein. And what's the first thing you'd do if you were invisible? Why, spy on your female co-workers in the bathroom and molest your comely next-door neighbour, of course! Soon, Bacon is thoroughly psychotic, and it's up to Elisabeth Shue (Bacon's co-worker and ex-girlfriend) and hunky Josh Brolin (her current snuggle bunny) to defeat the invisible man, who's picking off the science team one by one. You'd think this would be a prime opportunity for copious amounts of cheesy sex and aggressive violence--which Verhoeven served up so well and so exuberantly in Starship Troopers and Basic Instinct--but if anything, the director seems to tone down the proceedings, and really, who wants a muted Paul Verhoeven movie? Shue (who got top billing and a bad haircu! t to boot) and Brolin (who, yes, does take off his shirt at least once) generate little heat, and while Bacon does give an effective, primarily voice-oriented performance, his character is so underdeveloped that, well, you can see right through him. --Mark Englehart

  • The Spectacular Spider-Man - Volume Two [DVD] [2009]The Spectacular Spider-Man - Volume Two | DVD | (26/04/2010) from £3.23   |  Saving you £5.52 (375.51%)   |  RRP £6.99

Three more episodes of the Spectacular Spider-Man animated TV series arrive on Volume 2, which pits the wall crawler against a trio of classic foes from his comic book origins. Episodes 4 to 6, which are featured on the disc, continue the show’s main storyline, with teenaged Peter Parker battling a host of supervillains created by Osborne Industries to fuel the evil plans of The Big Man. In "Market Forces," it’s the Shocker--a hybrid of the original Marvel character and the Enforcer known as Montana--who wants to put an end to Spidey’s hero career, while the Sandman and Rhino are featured in "Competition" and "The Invisible Hand," respectively. The Big Man himself also makes an appearance in the latter, though it’s not who the Spider-Man faithful have come to associate with that name. Regardless, the action is plentiful, the characters largely faithful to their histories (the tweaks made by the series are harmless), and the scripts engaging and similar in tone to the classic Stan Lee/Steve Ditko adventures. One wishes more episodes could be included on each disc, as well as a few extras beyond the previews for other Marvel-related (and otherwise) animated series. --Paul Gaita

Unsurprising attracting awards attention, The Pacific is a ten-part series set in the midst of World War II, that follows the actions of three US Marines In the Pacific Theatre Of War. It’s a series not a million miles away from its spiritual predecessor, Band Of Brothers, which is understandable given the crossover of creative talent. Yet The Pacific is still a show with an identity of its own. It boasts the same sky-high production values of Band Of Brothers, but it also has a broader canvas, and a slightly slower pace to it. It’s absorbing drama, though, and the standard of it is kept high right throughout the ten-episode run. During that time, it takes in many key events of the time, and presents them with staggering confidence and strength. All of this, of course, makes you hope that the high definition transfer can do all of this justice. Fortunately, the news here is good. Few television shows have been treated to anywhere near the love that The Pacific has been in its 1080p transfer, and matched by surround sound work that’d put many blockbuster movies to shame, Is it Band Of Brothers 2? Absolutely not. Instead, The Pacific is a wonderful drama series in its own right, and one well worth picking up. --Jon Foster
