  • Best Laid Plans [1999]Best Laid Plans | DVD | (21/06/2004) from £5.99   |  Saving you £7.00 (53.90%)   |  RRP £12.99

At first, Best Laid Plans comes off like yet another all-flash-no-substance crime thriller but it's one of those rare films that end better than they start. Nick (Alessandro Nivola from Face/Off), broke and desperate to get out of his suffocating small town, agrees to take part in a drug heist. When his partners get caught, he has less than a week to come up with $15,000 or suffer the consequences. When his college buddy Brice (Josh Brolin--Flirting with Disaster) comes back to town, Nick and his girlfriend Lissa (Reese Witherspoon) hatch a plan to blackmail Brice out of a rare collectable. Of course, things go wrong--which is where things get entertaining. The plot could use a few more twists to really crackle but the surprises it does have work and the ending is both clever and affecting. Along the way, the best scene features a drug dealer who quotes economic theory from the bible of capitalism, The Wealth of Nations. In the past few years, Reese Witherspoon has turned in superb performances in such varied movies as Freeway, Pleasantville and especially Election; Best Laid Plans doesn't make much use of her talent but she's always watchable. --Bret Fetzer

  • Charlie's Angels - Series 1 [1977]Charlie's Angels - Series 1 | DVD | (23/06/2003) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £39.99

Back in the late 1970s Charlie's Angels was wildly popular television at its most self-consciously banal. The jiggly, joggly jolly first series' three (and best-remembered) belles--lioness Farrah Fawcett (then Farrah Fawcett-Majors), pin-up babe Jaclyn Smith and thinking man's beauty Kate Jackson--were something like primetime Spice Girls, gracing countless magazine covers and bestselling posters. The idea (even if a fan of the show didn't happen to be a straight male) was that one was compelled to choose a favourite angel as a kind of ink-blot window into one's subconscious life. While the 2000 Angels feature film kept faith with the original show's self-mockingly sloppy storytelling, there's nothing like seeing the old episodes for a lesson in narrative hubris. Basically, the three leading characters were bored policewomen wooed away to a private firm owned and operated by the unseen sybarite, Charlie (voiced--over speakerphone--by an uncredited John Forsythe). After a long set-up each week, the girls' investigations typically saw them going undercover as fashion models--no great stretch--in "Night of the Strangler", nurses in "Terror on Ward One", roller-derby stars in "Angels on Wheels" and vulnerable convicts (of course) in "Angels in Chains". The exploitation factor is not as bad as it might have been. The cast was so glamorous, their chemistry so perfect, that Charlie's Angels never became a mere meat market. Despite such nods to modernity as Fawcett's no-bra look, the episodes were old-fashioned in their heroine-in-peril appeal, yet there was a difference: the Angels looked out for themselves and each other. --Tom Keogh

  • Career Girls [1997]Career Girls | DVD | (11/02/2002) from £9.41   |  Saving you £3.57 (55.61%)   |  RRP £9.99

This simple comedy by British filmmaker Mike Leigh (Secrets and Lies) concerns the reunion of two women friends from university days who try hard, although awkwardly, to rediscover their early closeness. They succeed beautifully and experience a series of chance encounters with old friends and lovers whom they once knew together. Katrin Cartlidge (Breaking the Waves) and Lynda Steadman are outstanding, playing their characters via flashback in their grungy, early 20s as well as their more polished, contemporary selves at age 30. Following the complex ambitions of Secrets and Lies, Career Girls almost looks like a holiday for Leigh, but it is no less the rich product of his now-famous process of symbiotic rehearsal and writing. The film is also graced by some of the most delicate passages of remembered love between two people seen in a long time. --Tom Keogh, Amazon.com

  • Scrubbers [1982]Scrubbers | DVD | (10/10/2005) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £5.99

It's a crime what prison can do to a girl! 1983 marked a landmark in cinematic history - the birth of the 'Chicks in Chains' genre. The idea of babes behind bars trapped in close confines with the ever present threat of violence and promise of titillation proved a massive hit with audiences who flocked to see Chained Heat in the US and on our side of the pond Scrubbers. Scrubbers was a bleak look at life in an English girls' borstal and despite it's fair share of bare breasts demanded by the genre it is perhaps most notable for the early career appearances by the likes of Kathy Burke Robbie Coltrane Miriam Margolyes and Pam St. Clement (Pat Butcher in Eastenders) and for appearing uncannily like a youth version of the cult Australian TV series Prisoner: Cell Block H. Taking this caged heat idea to a new level Scrubbers actually sees a recently released lesbian inmate breaking back into the prison to be reunited with her lover. Meanwhile another inmate moved to a separate cell from her girlfriend breaks out of prison re-offends and is luckily incarcerated only one cell block away from her beloved. Unfortunately her former lover has since found a new companion. As passions burn and tensions run high betrayal bitchiness and jealousy all play their part in leading the inmates into a vicious feud that can only end in tears.
