My Dog Skip (2000) | DVD | (04/06/2001)
from £4.52
| Saving you £9.47 (209.51%)
| RRP My Dog Skip, a nonpareil family film, is, as one of the characters so aptly puts it, "a heartbreak waiting to happen". Frankie Muniz, winning over audiences in the TV series Malcolm in the Middle, has competition in My Dog Skip--Skip himself (adorably played by a total of six Jack Russell terriers). Muniz, an inveterate charmer, stars as Willie Morris (from whose memoir the film is adapted), a gawky, awkward boy growing up during World War II under an overly protective father (Kevin Bacon). When his mom (Diane Lane) gives him Skip on his ninth birthday, his life is changed in every way for the better. Previously disinterested peers become pals, and he experiences puppy love with a girl named Rivers (Caitlin Wachs). There are plenty of high jinks and rah-rah touches of Americana, and the film also attempts to deal with sophisticated emotions--Willie's boyhood hero turns out to be less than heroic--but its devastating emotional core comes, simply and obviously, with Skip's eventual ageing and demise. Dog lovers will be wiped out; those who don't care for canines shouldn't even be bothering to read this review. (Ages 8 and older) --David Kronke, Amazon.com

| RRP A sleeper star vehicle for Denzel Washington Ricochet is a campy revenge thriller in the Brian De Palma style. Director Russell Mulcahy (The Shadow) makes the most of the opportunity to showcase two great actors in an exaggerated story of cops, robbers, and revenge. Washington plays a cop who becomes a rising legal star as a result of arresting master criminal John Lithgow, who escapes prison, fakes his own death, and sets about framing lawyer Washington for various crimes. Lithgow methodically destroys his life, until Washington enlists the help of childhood friend and drug dealer Ice-T to turn the tables and put his tormentor out of business for good. Lurid and violent, the film is also happily over the top, making Ricochet a cheerfully decadent indulgence.--Robert Lane, Amazon.com

| RRP As Good as it Gets is one of the sharpest Hollywood comedies of the 1990s, for all of its conventional plotting about an obsessive-compulsive curmudgeon (Jack Nicholson) who improves his personality at the urging of his gay neighbour (Greg Kinnear) and particularly a waitress (Helen Hunt) who inspires his best behaviour. It's questionable whether a romance between Hunt and the much older Nicholson is entirely believable, but this movie's smart enough--and charmingly funny enough--to make it seem endearingly possible. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com Astonishingly, Jack Nicholson's legendary performance as a military tough guy in A Few Good Men really amounts to a glorified cameo: he's only in a few scenes. But they're killer scenes, and the film has much more to offer. Cruise also shines as a lazy lawyer who rises to the occasion, and Demi Moore gives a command performance. Director Rob Reiner poses important questions about the rights of the powerful and the responsibilities of those just following orders in this classic courtroom drama. --Alan Smithee, Amazon.com
