  Surprisingly light-hearted and witty, Paul Rudnick's Jeffrey (based on his off-Broadway play) was one of the first films to tackle the AIDS crisis without patting itself on the back or offering everything up in a sobering movie-of-the-week scenario. The titular Jeffrey (Steven Weber) is a happy-go-lucky gay man who suddenly comes face to face with the fact that AIDS has turned sex into something "radioactive". Paranoid in the extreme, he vows to become celibate--at just about the same time that hunky Steve (The Pretender's Michael T. Weiss) saunters into his life, eyes twinkling and hormones raging. The only problem is that Steve, for all his muscles and charm, is HIV-positive, thus setting Jeffrey's deepest fears into motion. When it was written in 1995, Jeffrey struck a nerve in mining the fear that a number of gay men felt during the height of the AIDS crisis. Even just a few years later, though, Jeffrey's paranoia (what, he's never heard of condoms?) seems dated, and his behaviour more self-damaging than self-aware--basically, he needs a slap upside the head as opposed to therapy. Still, Rudnick (who went on to pen the more mainstream In and Out) is never one to pass up a witty one-liner or an opportunity to poke fun at anyone, and Jeffrey now stands as a hilarious, sometimes poignant portrait of gay single life and the perils of dating in a paranoid time. Weber's Jeffrey is simultaneously open to the possibilities of life and fearful to embrace them, and Weiss is, well... gorgeous and funny and sexy beyond belief. Still, it's Patrick Stewart, as Jeffrey's interior decorator best friend, who effortlessly steals the film with his cutting wit; in his mouth, Rudnick's lines are priceless gems.   Small quirky comedy thrillers such as Drowning Mona are one of the things that American cinema does best and far too rarely. Peter Steinfeld's appealing script attracted a solid cast of stars under the direction of newcomer Nick Gomez (whose previous work includes episodes of The Sopranos). It seems that someone has cut Mona's brake cables and she drove to her death by drowning. Bette Midler's Mona manages to make it entirely plausible that almost everyone might have wanted to kill her: from her son's business partner Eddie (Casey Affleck) to her husband's mistress Rona (Jamie Lee Curtis). The local police chief (Danny DeVito), already burdened with subordinates who refer to running away from danger as "securing the perimeter" and the impending marriage of his daughter (Neve Campbell) to the sweet but unreliable Eddie, has to make sense of the farrago of lies and half-truths which is all anyone will tell him. This is an ingenious tightly plotted film which is never too busy to scatter odd little gags at its margins; it's a tall tale, whose complicated telling is half the fun. On the DVD The DVD comes with the theatrical trailer, a director's commentary, interviews with the stars and four deleted scenes.   A far-fetched combination of psychological thriller and over-the-top horror movie, The Day the World Ended is a brash, rather ham-fisted piece of work. With Nastassja Kinski leading the cast, the odds were never on this being an example of great cinema, but Terence Gross's film is exceptionally ridiculous in parts.The director manages to pull a range of clichés out of the bag, from the Lynchian small-town American weirdos to the handy thunder storm during moments of high drama. The premise of a lonely, gifted child hiding a dark secret has been explored before but never quite to such a bizarre extent--the events involved here leading to a gory, tasteless finale. Kinski sleepwalks her way through her role with little conviction, matched by Randy Quaid's caricature villain. Much is made of the special effects skills of Stan Winston (Jurassic Park, Terminator 2), but without any degree of budget, his efforts are merely terrifyingly ordinary. On the DVD: one thing becomes clear from the DVD version of the film--despite the overwhelming evidence to the contrary, the makers of The Day the World Ended consider it a fine example of the genre. The audio commentary from producers Winston and Shane Mahan is especially self-reverential, even going so far at one point as to praise the film's great character acting. A hectic visual style and suitably monstrous sound effects it may have (all admittedly enhanced by the digital format), but great character acting it does not. Likewise, there is an in-depth feature on the rather shoddy special effects. The last thing anybody wanted, the earnest voiceover tells us, was for the monster to look like some guy in a rubber suit. --Phil Udell
