In Leonard Cohens Lonesome Heroes the scope and detail of Cohens artistic inspirations is put under the microscope to quite fascinating result. Cohens first love was poetry and in the works of the Spanish poet Garcia Lorca and his fellow Canadian Irving Layton he found the words that moved him to create his own verse. The beat writers too hit a note with Leonard and their work has lived with him throughout his career. It may not come as a surprise to find Bob Dylan and Judy Collins as part of this index but perhaps a less acknowledged genre of interest to Cohen is Country music - however he was deeply affected by performers such as Hank Williams Hank Snow and the country recordings of Ray Charles. And the fact Cohens records have always achieved greater success in Europe than in North America may partly be due to his love of the Belgian chansonnier Jacques Brel. These and many others artists are here shown to have played a crucial role in the formation of Leonard Cohen's muse. But religion and spirituality too have played an enormous role in Leonards life and music particularly the faith into which he was born Judaism and his more recent study of Buddhism which drove him to spend several years in a monastery meditating for hours every day.

  • Back To Bataan [1945]Back To Bataan | DVD | (25/04/2005) from £10.92   |  Saving you £-0.93 (N/A%)   |  RRP £9.99

In 'Back To Bataan' John Wayne plays Colonel Joe Madden a rough tough officer serving under General MacArthur during the Second World War. When American forces are forced to pull out of Bataan Madden volunteers to stay behind and organize the Filipino residents into a top flight guerilla force that will keep the Japanese on edge until MacArthur's promised return. There's some romance amid the suspense and sweaty action as an attractive Manila resistance liason (Fely Franquelli) falls for Wayne's second-in-command Captain Andres Bonifacio (Anthony Quinn) an earnest fighter trying to live up to his folk hero father's reputation. Madden however is too busy for women preferring to spend his time communicating by radio to his valiant men as they count the boats and plant the mines. The Duke is nicely understated in this atypical role a nice counterbalance to costar Quinn's typically impassioned performance. War film buffs should enjoy the film's appealing blend of action nail-biting suspense and jingoistic patriotism. Director Edward Dmytryk would later go on to direct 'The Caine Mutiny' and 'The Young Lions'.

One of the most underrated British films produced between the end of the swinging sixties and the beginning of the hippy seventies. Leonard Whiting (Romeo from Franco Zeffirelli's Romeo and Juliet) plays a young dreamer who is trapped in a working class existence: living in a council house with a father who has no horizon higher than working in the local factory. Jean Simmons is the mature woman living in a leafy Surrey house with her stockbroker husband and two children but desperately unhappy. When the two unlikely lovers meet on a train to London Whiting ignores the come-on from Susan Penhaligon by saying 'today I am going to climb Mount Everest ' and so begins his charm offensive of the mature woman across London's 1970s landscape. Beautifully written and with expert filming by Geoffrey Unsworth Say Hello To Yesterday is one of the most insightful British films of its day.

  • Star Trek : 1-10 [1979]Star Trek : 1-10 | DVD | (11/08/2003) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £109.99

Even if (when) more big-screen adventures come along, this Star Trek DVD Movies Collection will remain a fitting memento of this astonishingly long-running franchise. Containing all 10 movies from The Motion Picture (1979) to Nemesis (2003), this box set charts the voyages of the USS Enterprise(s) from the original ship's first major refit since its legendary five-year mission to the last outing for the Enterprise E in the next century. After this, there will be new ships and new crews. The most famous starship in the galaxy has finally retired. Along the way, there have been many highs and just a few lows. The Motion Picture's Director's Edition solved many of the theatrical release's problems. Its follow-up, The Wrath of Khan, is still regarded as the series' finest hour. Movies III and IV chart Spock's fall and resurrection in quasi-religious terms, but also add welcome humour in The Voyage Home. Taken together II, III and IV make for a satisfyingly self-contained trilogy, which is one reason why the next entry, The Final Frontier, seemed like a disappointment. Khan director Nicholas Meyer returned for the superior VI, The Undiscovered Country, allowing the original crew to sign-off in style. Attempting to please fans old and new, the messy Generations ended up pleasing almost no one. Thankfully, the second Next Generation film, First Contact, comes in a close second to Khan in the series-best stakes. Neither Insurrection or Nemesis could quite match what had gone before, but both were solidly entertaining adventures nonetheless. On the DVDs: The Star Trek DVD Movies Collection is a 10-disc set complete with booklet and postcard-size Nemesis film stills. However, only the first four movies are presented in their Special Edition versions--these have the same content as the feature discs of the separately released two-disc sets--and the Nemesis disc also contains a commentary, documentaries and deleted scenes. Movies V-IX are bare-bones releases, though, with no extra content to speak of. Fans will therefore not find this box set to be a substitute for the individual Special Edition versions. --Mark Walker
