Lou Rawls who died in January of this year was a leading figure in popular music for over fifty years as well as being one of its most respected and versatile. His early roots were in gospel as was the case with many of the great soul voices of his generation. Following spells with two of Chicago's finest gospel groups The Highway Q.C.'s and The Pilgrim Travelers his move into secular music as he branched out into the fields of jazz R&B soul and even easy-listening proved highly successful. During his heyday period during the latter half of the Sixties and throughout the Seventies he notched up over thirty hit singles and two dozen chart albums. As a result of his years playing live dates to audiences of all types Rawls was a truly consummate showman in his later years as attested by the two superb concert performances which make up this dvd. Recorded at the 1992 and 1995 North Sea Jazz Festivals they both demonstrate his extraordinary rapport with his audiences as well as the wide scope of his repertoire. The Abbott and Costello TV Show is timeless American humor as fresh today as it was 40 years ago. All the classic routines which the boys performed on film radio and stage were captured in 1952-1953 for the new medium of television and delivered at the peak of their powers. The regular cast of characters including Mr. Fields Mike the Cop Stinky Bacciagalupe and Hillary had worked with Bud and Lou on film and stage and each contributed memorably. These shows stand today as perhaps the finest surviving representation of the art of burlesque comedy.THE ARMY STORYThe army must be in really bad shape if it has to draft Bud and Lou but that's exactly what happens in this mirth-filled military episode. After proving to landlord Fields that their 13 weeks of back room rent at a week total the boys head to boot camp. During training it's Corporal (!) Abbott and Sergeant Mike the Cop against poor Lou who outwits his bunkmates in a zany dice game. The team finishes it's army career with a classic slap-stick routine that lands Lou face first in the dirt.EFFICIENCY EXPERTSBud and Lou have miraculously landed a job with the Globe Efficiency Company. J. J. Wentworth hires the boys to stop his spendthrift daughters from spending all his money. Within minutes of meeting the girls they have Bud and Lou wrapped around their fingers. Lou's feeble attempts to get them to economize are disastrous as he gives one of the girls a facial with plastic cement! To make amends the boys are forced to take the girls to a gambling joint where they start a riot and fire - and lose a fortune.PEACE AND QUIETClassic burlesque reigns as sleepless Lou visits Dr. Mildew for rest. After run-ins with assorted nuts in the waiting room Lou's told to listen to Dr. Drowsy's Slumberland record at bedtime. When this crazy treatment only puts Bud to sleep. Lou's off to the sanitarium where the staff is nuttier than the boys. In a wild recreation of the Crazy House sketch Lou's attempts to sleep are constantly interrupted by a parade of zanies armed with punchlines bullets and seltzer.HONEYMOON HOUSEThe love bug has bitten Lou and Bud must show him how to propose. To convince Sally to say 'yes' Lou buys a Bride's Delight Prefabricated House. But her ex-beau has other ideas and changes the numbers on all the crates. The finished house is a nightmare. After Lou's hopeless attempt to stop his future mother-in-law's hiccups a piano crashes through a wall and lights go haywire. The Fantastic Four (Dir. Tim Story 2005): Prepare for the fantastic! The lifelong dream of inventor astronaut and scientist Dr. Reed Richards (Ioan Gruffudd) is close to being realized. He is spearheading a trip to outer space to the center of a cosmic storm. There he hopes to unlock the secrets of the human genetic codes for the benefit of all humanity. Extensive government grant cutbacks nearly dashed the visionary's hopes of the historic flight until Reed accepted a financing deal with his old college rival Victor Von Doom (Julian McMahon) now a billionaire industrialist. Reed's crew for the mission includes his best friend astronaut Ben Grimm (Michael Chiklis); Sue Storm (Jessica Alba) Von Doom's director of genetic research and Reed's ex-girlfriend; and Sue's hot-headed younger brother pilot Johnny Storm (Chris Evans). With benefactor Von Doom in tow the four set off for the exploration of a lifetime. The mission is uneventful - until Reed discovers a miscalculation of the speed of the approaching storm. Within minutes the event threshold is upon them. The space station is engulfed by turbulent clouds of cosmic radiation which genetically transforms the crew. Their DNA is irrevocably altered - and so is their future. Back on earth the effects of the exposure are quickly revealed. Reed gains the ability to stretch and contort his body into any shape he can imagine and as leader of the group is given the name Mr. Fantastic; Sue is able to render herself invisible and to create and project powerful force fields as Invisible Woman; Johnny becomes known as The Human Torch as he can now engulf his body in flames and take flight at will; and Ben whose freakish transmutation is the most shocking becomes an orange-colored rock-like superhumanly strong creature The Thing. Together they turn tragedy into triumph and catastrophe into coalition using their unique and formidable powers to thwart the evil plans of their now steely-eyed iron-fisted nemesis Dr. Doom... The Hulk (Dir. Ang Lee 2003): Scientist Bruce Banner (Eric Bana) has to put it mildly anger management issues. His quiet life as a brilliant researcher working with cutting edge genetic technology conceals a nearly forgotten and painful past. His ex-girlfriend and equally brilliant fellow researcher Betty Ross (Jennifer Connelly) has tired of Bruce's cordoned off emotional terrain and resigns herself to remaining an interested onlooker to his quiet life. Which is exactly where Betty finds herself during one of the early trials in Banner's groundbreaking research. A simple oversight leads to an explosive situation and Bruce makes a split-second decision; his heroic impulse saves a life and leaves him apparently unscathed-his body absorbing a normally deadly dose of gamma radiation. Acclaimed Oscar-winning filmmaker Ang Lee turns his masterful eye to adapting the classic Marvel Comics character for the big screen. Setting out to faithfully transfer the Hulk comic book character from four-color paneled page to motion picture screen Lee combines all the elements of a blockbuster visual effects-intensive superhero movie with the brooding romance and tragedy of Universal's classic horror films. Staying true to the early subversive spirit of the Hulk as envisioned by its creators (Stan Lee and Jack Kirby) while also tuning the tale to current dangerous times Lee presents a portrait of a man at war with himself and the world both a superhero and a monster a means of wish fulfillment and a nightmare...
