The Swords of Wayland (Parts 1 and 2): Robin and the outlaws leave Sherwood to defend a distant village from the Hounds of Lucifer eerily clad horsemen who terrorise the neighbourhood. They are the servants of a powerful coven ruled by Morgwyn of Ravenscar. The coven's purpose is to find the seven swords of Wayland to use for a ritual invoking Lucifer - the devil. One of the seven swords is Albion entrusted to Robin Hood by the mysterious hooded god of the forest Herne. Albion eventually falls into Morgwyn''s hands and she bewitches the outlaws to turn against their leader. Robin is alone locked in combat with the most powerful forces of darkness. The Greatest Enemy: The Sheriff threatened by King John with the loss of office should he fail to finally dispose of Robin Hood sets up a successful ambush. Only Robin Marion and Much escape. Pursued by hounds and men at arms they are flushed out of Sherwood to make an armed stand on a rocky outcrop. Their arrows wreak havoc amidst the heavy forces besetting them yet there can be little hope. Is this the end of Robin Hood?
When Robin of Loxley transformed into Robert of Huntingdon in the third series of Robin of Sherwood, many viewers were understandably confused. Michael Praed left the series for reasons that never really became apparent while Jason Connery clearly wasn't a replacement chosen for similar looks or performance. Across the 13 episodes of the third series, Connery's choice became slowly apparent. The magical stories frequently dipped into darker territory as much as they aimed for uplifting humour. The new Hood was at ease with both, while reuniting the merry band and ultimately wooing the fair Marion all over again. Connery turned in a very confident embodiment of the character, clearly bonding well with the established team of actors. Guest stars lined up to contribute alongside him. Memorable appearances include those of Richard O'Brien, David Rappaport, Matt Frewer, Patricia Hodge, Ian Ogilvy and Lewis Collins. (It's fascinating to speculate how different things could have been if the close-second casting choice of Neil Morrissey had been pursued.) The strangest aspect of the series, however, is knowing in retrospect that everyone's confidence and merriment was for nothing. Scripts were written in readiness for the fourth series, but then the studio went bankrupt. Cliffhangers therefore remain that will confuse viewers far more than the lead's replacement. --Paul Tonks

Epic filmmaking has fallen out of favour, but The Eagle fights hard to bring it back. Marcus Aquila (Channing Tatum) chose to lead a Roman garrison in occupied Britain because that's where his father lost a military standard--a metal eagle, representing the glory of imperial Rome--on an expedition into the northern wilds. To reclaim his family honor, Aquila sets off into native territory to recover the eagle, with only a slave named Esca (Jamie Bell) to help him--but the more Aquila learns about Esca's history, the more he has reason to doubt his slave's loyalty. The Eagle starts with engaging momentum; this is a work of fiction, but there's an impressive commitment to the details of life, evoking the sights, sounds, and smells of a raw and brutal time. (Director Kevin Macdonald began as a documentarian, which no doubt contributes to his appreciation for grit and sweat.) Tatum is not the most versatile actor but he has enough solid charisma to anchor the movie; Bell's fluid emotional presence keeps their relationship dynamic. The movie loses steam in the last third, as the outcome is never really in doubt and the plot mechanics start to feel a bit rote. But for anyone with an interest in the era, or who simply enjoys a taste of blood and thunder, The Eagle has pleasures aplenty. --Bret Fetzer

Set in the slums of Kingston, Jamaica, Dancehall Queen is a hugely enjoyable melodrama featuring a resourceful heroine, spectacularly slimy villains and a lot of very loud music. Street vendor Marcia (Audrey Reid) is under pressure from all directions--family friend Larry has made her dependent on his good will before putting sexual pressure on her teenage daughter while street thug Priest has killed a friend for minding her patch and is now trying to push his way into her bed. What is attractive about this film is that Marcia wins by playing to her strengths: she goes back to the wild-child dirty dancing she loved before having her children and becomes Mystery Lady, a contender for cash prizes in competition. Most of the film's occasional touches of wild comedy come from her attempts to keep this from her rather staid daughter and the ease with which, from behind silver foil fringes and jewelled nose-chains, she can take revenge on the men who mess with her quieter persona. This is a surprisingly classy little movie, whose rawness comes across as urgency: e en those of us who miss half the patois dialogue can't help but respond to its fizzy energy. On the DVD The DVD has digitally re-mastered music, the usual chapter index, a Web link and what is called "Hyperactive DVDROM" content which means it is very, very flashy and very, very loud. --Roz Kaveney
