from £29.05

| RRP Fifteen years before Stranger Things combined science fiction, Spielbergian touches and 80s nostalgia to much acclaim, Richard Kelly set the template and the high-water mark with his debut feature, Donnie Darko. Initially beset with distribution problems, it would slowly find its audience and emerge as arguably the first cult classic of the new millennium. Donnie is a troubled high school student: in therapy, prone to sleepwalking and in possession of an imaginary friend, a six-foot rabbit named Frank, who tells him the world is going to end in 28 days, 06 hours, 42 minutes and 12 seconds. During that time he will navigate teenage life, narrowly avoid death in the form of a falling jet engine, follow Frank's maladjusted instructions and try to maintain the space-time continuum. Described by its director as The Catcher in the Rye as told by Philip K. Dick, Donnie Darko combines an eye-catching, eclectic cast pre-stardom Jake and Maggie Gyllenhaal, heartthrob Patrick Swayze, former child star Drew Barrymore, Oscar nominees Mary McDonnell and Katharine Ross, and television favourite Noah Wyle and an evocative soundtrack of 80s classics by Echo and the Bunnymen, Tears for Fears and Duran Duran. This 4K restoration by Arrow Films allows a modern classic to receive the home video treatment it deserves.

Jack Frost | DVD | (29/11/1999)
from £7.55
| Saving you £6.44 (85.30%)
| RRP Whatever you do, don't confuse this Jack Frost with the 1997 comedic horror flick of the same name (its tagline: "He's chillin ... and killin'"). This family film stars Michael Keaton as Jack Frost, an aspiring musician, loving husband and occasionally absent father. Frost's life is unexpectedly cut short by a car accident and a year after his death he comes back as--you guessed it--a snowman, to help his family heal (Kelly Preston and Joseph Cross as wife and son Gabby and Charlie, respectively). The sudden death may affect sensitive younger viewers but by the time Frost returns the movie is more light-hearted and the film's message is a worthy one. There's an underlying theme that supports independence, and Gabby isn't saddled with a new dude by the film's end. There's also a good rapport developed between father and son, and especially mother and son. If an audience can take that huge leap of faith to accept the premise (as youthful audiences will no doubt be able to do), this is entertaining family fare. --N F Mendoza

| RRP An early success for Russell T. Davies, this peak-time drama series explores the 'upstairs-downstairs' lives of the management, staff and guests of a luxury Manchester hotel in the 1920s. Starring Susan Hampshire, Tim Healy and Mark McGann, The Grand's compelling storylines often encompass the darker side of inter-war life: as poverty and exploitation, covert prostitution and unenlightened attitudes loom large, life is not all it seems behind the hotel's elegant façade New Year's Eve, 1918. Owners John and Sarah Bannerman celebrate the reopening of their refurbished hotel and the return of demobbed son Stephen. But their joy is marred by a crisis that could lose them the hotel and one that can only be resolved with the financial muscle of John's brother, Marcus. Amoral and ruthless to the point of sadistic, with a barely concealed interest in Sarah, Marcus now holds a key stake in the business, making sibling rivalry and conflict inevitable. This complete set contains all eighteen episodes from both series.
