  • Dancehall Queen [1997]Dancehall Queen | DVD | (25/08/2008) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £12.99

A Cinderella story from the mean streets of Kingston, Jamaica, the alternately comic and gritty Dancehall Queen is an intriguingly dark crowd pleaser. Marcia (Audrey Reid) is a single mom and street vendor barely scraping by even with a financial assist from the seemingly avuncular Larry (Carl Davis), a gun-toting strongman with a twisted desire for Marcia's teenage daughter. Complicating things is Priest (Paul Campbell), a murderous hood who killed Marcia's friend and now is terrorizing the defenseless woman. Facing three big problems--Larry, Priest, and a lack of money---Marcia arrives at an inspired solution: develop an alter ego, a dancing celebrity called the Mystery Lady who can compete in a cash-prize contest and pit both of the men against one another. Which is exactly what she does, and it's great fun watching Marcia instigate her complicated plan with a little help from sympathetic friends. Colorful, rowdy, funny, and dangerous, Dancehall Queen is a clever and ceaselessy energetic movie steeped in Kingston street life and the desire to keep body and soul together at home. Reid is a delight as the everyday figure who transforms into an icon in the evenings, and the dance scenes are amazingly bawdy. --Tom Keogh

This acclaimed six-part drama superbly captures the mood of late seventies/early eighties Britain, charting the fortunes of two school-leavers trying to find their place in the adult world. Powerfully written by Emmy- and BAFTA-winning Nigel Williams, Johnny Jarvis confronts the major issues of the day unemployment, racial tension, drugs and family breakdown and features memorably gritty performances from Mark Farmer and Ian Sears as the two friends who find their youthful optimism challenged by the harshness of real life. Hackney, 1977. Johnny Jarvis and Alan Lipton become unlikely friends in their final year at a comprehensive: Jarvis is the class clown, a popular lad with a talent for welding, while Lipton is a bookish dreamer who spends his time fabricating impressive exploits, pondering the future and fantasising about the father he's never met. As they leave school and anxiously embark on an uncertain future, can their friendship survive?

  • Minder - Series 1 - Part 1 Of 4Minder - Series 1 - Part 1 Of 4 | DVD | (04/06/2001) from £4.90   |  Saving you £11.09 (226.33%)   |  RRP £15.99

First appearing on our screens in late 1979, Minder was a vehicle for ex-Sweeney sidekick Denis Waterman, but its lasting contribution to TV culture was rehabilitating George Cole, whose lovable but unscrupulous "entrepreneur" (an older version of the spiv he portrayed in the St Trinians films) mockingly reflected the values of 1980s Thatcherite Britain. The series is fondly set in a rough demimonde of small-time gangsters and ageing dolly birds, and against a backdrop of seedy London pubs and dubious business dealings. Waterman plays Terry McCann, ex-boxer and ex-con trying to stick to the straight and narrow, but persuaded against his better judgement to become involved in murky capers set up by his employer, "Arfur", who regularly sublets him to dodgy associates of his. In this, the first series, Arthur Daley is more in control, not quite the figure of fun he would later become. In the opening episode, for instance, as Terry is held hostage by wannabe black militants in a launderette, Arthur is negotiating his "exclusive" story to a tabloid. Though aspects of these episodes are a little creaky and dated--Terrys flares especially--the interplay between the too softhearted hard man Terry and his dapper but slippery boss is both priceless and timeless. This DVD has a scene selection feature and individual episode guides. --David Stubbs

  • Delirious [1991]Delirious | DVD | (12/08/2002) from £14.36   |  Saving you £-1.37 (N/A%)   |  RRP £12.99

A 1991 comedy, Delirious stars John Candy as the head writer on a soap opera set in the fictional small town of Ashford Falls, whose naff power dressing and power wrangling is distinctly reminiscent of Dynasty. Candy has a crush on the somewhat imperious and Joan Collins-esque star of the show, played by Emma Samms, although waiting in the wings to be written into the show is the more wholesome and unaffected actress Mariel Hemingway. Delirious takes a turn when Candy is felled in an accident and awakes, supernaturally, to find himself in the very world of his own soap, with Ashford Falls a real town and its fictional characters, including Samms, now real people. Candy discovers, however, that in this world he has the power to "write" situations as they suit him--in this case, by casting himself as a dashing, wealthy and mysterious Wall Street hero, able to sweep Samms off her feet. The film is in some ways a precursor of Pleasantville (in which two teens are sucked into the world of a "Honey, I'm home" black and white 1950s sitcom). However, between them the star, writers and director (Tom Mankiewicz) make a ham fist of Delirious. The parody of soap mores is quite well done but quickly palls in its obviousness; Candy's performance is misjudged, as if trying too hard to make the best of a bad job; while overall, the film feels cheap, tacky and broad, once again raising the question why in the 1980s and 90s America produced such great sitcoms but such poor film comedies. On the DVD: Delirious is presented in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen. It's a decent enough edition but looks its age in places, in terms of colour definition in particular. The only extra is the original trailer. --David Stubbs
