The Music Hall was once the most popular form of entertainment in London. Bawdy raucous sentimental and energetic it produced a whole host of stars and some of the best-loved songs of all time. Filmed in the 1960s A Little Of What You Fancy is a loving tribute to the likes of Lily Morris Gus Elen and Ella Shields. Featuring original archive film of the stars plus rare prints portraits and photographs it traces what remains of the great Music Halls in 1960s London - and discovers the spirit of Music Hall still very much alive in places like The Players Theatre off the trand and MacDonalds in Hoxton. 1960s performances by Helen Shapiro singing Dont Dilly Dally and The Lambeth Walk and Sheila Bernette singing She Was Poor But She Was Honest Dear Old Pals and Covent Garden in the Morning are mixed with original recordings of Stanley Holloways I Live in Trafalgar Square and Lets All Go Down the Strand. Gus Elen is captured performing Its a Great Big Shame and Lily Morris is seen and heard lamenting Why am I Always the Bridesmaid? And these are just a few of the musical highlights in this glorious celebration of traditional Music Hall at its very best!

  • The Nutcracker [1985]The Nutcracker | DVD | (23/02/1998) from £14.98   |  Saving you £3.01 (20.09%)   |  RRP £17.99

If Christmas is an elusive, childhood state of mind, Peter Wright's 1985 Royal Ballet production of The Nutcracker, recorded at Covent Garden, is just the thing to recapture it. The delicately symmetrical choreography of Wright and Lev Ivanov ensures that the stage is constantly filled with the mesmerising enchantment demanded by Tchaikovsky's perennial favourite. The ballet's success will always lie, in part, in its familiarity and its intrinsic status as Christmas entertainment, but the best productions, like Wright's, give equal weight to the dark forces of Hoffmann's original tale, which must be overcome before good and innocence can prevail. Here, the sadness of Drosselmeyer is a potent thread in the ballet, resolved in a moving, well-judged moment as the curtain falls. There is real magic in the dancing, from Julie Rose's charming, constantly involved Clara to the irresistible images of the divertissements. But rightly, the laurels go to Lesley Collier as the Sugar Plum Fairy and Anthony Dowell as the Prince for a pas de deux that seems to hover above the stage without making contact. And, like Wright's production, the splendid sets of Julia Trevelyan Oman--combining traditional Victorian Christmas images, a delicate filigree flower garden and pre-Raphaelite angels--steer the right side of sentimentality. On the DVD: The Nutcracker has no extras on this DVD, although the booklet provides adequate production notes. The 4:3 format also provides adequate picture quality for a mid-1980s television production, although no amount of colour adjustment improves a slightly washed-out look. The sound, Linear PCM Stereo, makes the orchestra sound robust and solid at the occasional expense of subtlety. --Piers Ford

Based on the novels by Bernard Cornwell, Sharpe (1993-7) ran to 14 full-length television films that follow the adventures of the titular soldier through the later years of the Napoleonic Wars. The programmes are an outstanding achievement for the small screen, dominated by Sean Bean's central performance as the heroic, troubled outsider who turns out to be a resourceful and loyal leader. Bolstered by a strong supporting cast, particularly Daragh O'Malley as Harper and (in later episodes) Abigail Cruttenden as Jane, Sharpe is often visually striking, the action tense and gripping. Consistency is maintained by all 14 episodes being directed by Tom Clegg. On the DVD: Sharpe on DVD contains a photo gallery and several screens of background text. The sound is full-bodied stereo while the very "sharp" picture has been transferred slightly letterboxed at 14:9. Though looking much better than the original TV transmissions the occasionally cropped framing makes it apparent the films were shot in 16:9 widescreen, so it is regrettable they have not been transferred to DVD in that format. Otherwise these are first-rate releases. --Gary S Dalkin
