It's hard to believe Ridley Scott's handsome epic won't become the cinematic touchstone of the Crusades for years to come. Kingdom of Heaven is greater than the sum of its parts delivering a vital mostly engrossing tale following Balian (Orlando Bloom) a lonely French blacksmith who discovers he's a noble heir and takes his father's (Liam Neeson) place in the center of the universe circa 1184: Jerusalem. Here grand battles and backdoor politics are key as Scott and first-time screenwriter William Monahan fashion an excellent storyline to tackle the centuries-long conflict. Two forward-thinking kings Baldwin (Edward Norton in an uncredited yet substantial role) and Saladin (Ghassan Massoud) hold an uneasy truce between Christians (who hold the city) and Muslims while factions champ at the bit for blood. There are good and evildoers on both sides with the Knights Templar taking the brunt of the blame; Balian plans to find his soul while protecting Baldwin and the people. The look of the film as nearly everything is from Scott is impressive: his CGI-infused battle scenes rival the LOTR series and with cinematographer John Mathieson create postcard beauty with snowy French forests and the vast desert (filmed in Morocco and Spain). An excellent supporting cast including Jeremy Irons Brendan Gleeson and David Thewlis also help make the head and heart of the film work. Many critics pointed out that Bloom doesn't have the gravitas of Russell Crowe in the lead (then again who does?) but it's the underdeveloped character and not the actor that hurts the film and impacts its power. Balian isn't given much more to do than be sullen and give an occasional big speech alongside his perplexing abilities for warfare tactics and his wandering moral compass (whose sole purpose seems to be to put a love scene in the movie). Note: all the major characters except Neeson's are based on fact but many are heavily fictionalized. --Doug Thomas Amazon.com --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

The film that established Terry Gilliam as more than just Monty Python’s resident animator this delightfully inventive children’s fantasy is about young Kevin (Craig Warnock) who finds himself travelling through holes in the space-time continuum in the company of half a dozen fractious dwarfs. Along the way he encounters Agamemnon (Sean Connery) Robin Hood (John Cleese) Napoleon (Ian Holm) and winds up as a passenger on the Titanic although not necessarily in that order. But is this just random entertainment laid on for history fan Kevin’s benefit or part of a wider struggle between the forces of good (Ralph Richardson) and evil (David Warner)? At the time this was a rare example of a small-budget British film successfully taking on American blockbusters. Now it's a much-loved fantasy classic bursting with inspired images and ideas: Gilliam and co-writer Michael Palin (who also appears) are clearly enjoying themselves as much as their audience. Having made his reputation as one of the most prolific and gifted horror writers of his generation (prompting Stephen King to call him "the future of horror"), Clive Barker made a natural transition to movies with this audacious directorial debut from 1987. Not only did Barker serve up a chilling tale of devilish originality, he also introduced new icons of horror that since have become as popular among genre connoisseurs as Frankenstein's monster and the Wolfman. Foremost among these frightful, Hellraiser visions is the sadomasochistic demon affectionately named Pinhead (so named because his pale, bald head is a geometric pincushion and a symbol of eternal pain). Pinhead is the leader of the Cenobites, agents of evil who appear only when someone successfully "solves" the exotic puzzle box called the Lamont Configuration--a mysterious device that opens the door to Hell. The puzzle's latest victim is Frank (Sean Chapman), who now lives in a gelatinous skeletal state in an upstairs room of the British home just purchased by his newlywed half-brother (Andrew Robinson, best known as the villain from Dirty Harry), who has married one of Frank's former lovers (Claire Higgins). The latter is recruited to supply the cannibalistic Frank with fresh victims, enabling him to reconstitute his own flesh--but will Frank succeed in restoring himself completely? Will Pinhead continue to demonstrate the flesh-ripping pleasures of absolute agony? Your reaction to this description should tell you if you've got the stomach for Barker's film, which has since spawned a number of interesting but inferior sequels. It's definitely not for everyone, but there's no denying that it's become a semiclassic of modern horror. --Jeff Shannon

Years before Harrison Ford (Indiana Jones, Star Wars) and James Caan (The Godfather) stepped into the limelight, the Hollywood legends starred in this heartfelt film about searching for glory and discovering just how harsh reality can be along the way. In the midst of the Civil War, a ragtag band of West Texas boys set out to join the Confederate army. Led by the fearless, steadfast Buck Burnett (Caan), the Concho County Comanches ride to Shiloh with an unshakable belief in their mission. But as they experience the horrors of life in the Deep South first-hand and find their lives at risk before the fighting's even started the gang worries if their faith in the Confederate cause might be misplaced. Released in 1968, just as apprehension about the Vietnam War began to crystallize, Journey to Shiloh is a compelling coming-of-age tale about brotherhood, loyalty, and conviction, with strong parallels to the burgeoning anti-war sentiment of the 1960s and 70s. As bullets fly, blood spills, and bonds forge, the Comanches learn what it means to put their lives on the line for a shaky cause and by the time you reach the film's heart-stopping finale, you will too.
