| RRP Martin Scorsese's lavish period piece, an achingly beautiful adaptation of the classic novel. No filmmaker captures the grandeur and energy of New York like Martin Scorsese (Goodfellas). With this sumptuous romance, he meticulously adapted the work of another great New York artist, Edith Wharton, bringing to life her tragic novel of the cloistered world of Gilded Age Manhattan. The Age of Innocence tells the story of Newland Archer (My Beautiful Laundrette's Daniel DayLewis), whose engagement to an innocent socialite (Heathers' Winona Ryder) binds him to the codes and rituals of his upbringing. But when her cousin (Dangerous Liaisons' Michelle Pfeiffer) arrives in town on a wave of scandal after separating from her husband, she ignites passions in Newland he never knew existed. Swelling with exquisite period detail, this film is an alternately heartbreaking and satirical look at the brutality of oldworld America. Features: New, restored 4K digital transfer, approved by director Martin Scorsese, with 5.1 surround DTSHD New interviews with Scorsese, coscreenwriter Jay Cocks, production designer Dante Ferretti, and costume designer Gabriella Pescucci Innocence and Experience, a 1993 documentary on the making of the film Trailer PLUS: An essay by critic Geoffrey O'Brien

| RRP The first Batman sequel takes a wicked turn with the villainous exploits of the freakish and mean-spirited Penguin (Danny DeVito), whose criminal collaboration with evil tycoon Max Shreck (Christopher Walken) threatens to drain Gotham City of its energy supply. As if that wasn't enough, Batman (Michael Keaton) has his hands full with the vengeful Catwoman (Michelle Pfeiffer), who turns out to be a lot more dangerous than a kitten with a whip. As with the first Batman feature, director Tim Burton brings his distinct visual style to the frantic action but this time there's a darker malevolence lurking beneath all that extraordinary production design. --Jeff Shannon

I Know What You Did Last Summer | DVD | (01/10/1999)
from £N/A
| Saving you £N/A (N/A%)
| RRP Just what the world needs, another riff on that post-Psycho horror cliché: the slasher movie. In this version, which considerably dumbs down the Lois Duncan book, the bad guy chases naughty teenagers with a hook, all the while dressed as a dark version of the Gorton's fisherman. They seem to have killed someone in a car accident while out partying, and a price must be paid. Nothing new is added to the genre by I Know What You Did Last Summer, though it would be unfair not to note that this does have some scary moments. That is about all it has, because as much as this wanted to be another Scream, it hasn't the heart or the script. It does, however, have the requisite cast of small-screen stars (including Party of Five's Jennifer Love Hewitt and Buffy herself, Sarah Michelle Gellar) to have snagged box-office success, spawning a sequel. --Rochelle O'Gorman
