  When farmer Ben Singleton (Ian Holm) faces a strike by the Transport and General Workers Union he decides to walk his 500 plumped up gaggle of geese to the Christmas Smithfield Market in London just as they did in medieval times. He persuades his wife (Penelope Wilton) daughter and two loyal workers to undertake the one hundred-mile trek to the Capital which becomes fraught with peril and humour. The screenplay by actor Brian Glover harks back affectionately to the Ealing Comedies of the 1940s and '50s with it's battle of the small man against the stupidity of the bureaucrats and the media.

More clean-cut than the vigilante of the novels, Moore's Templar is a reformed thief (with an accent on reformed) whose adventures invariably involve a beautiful girl in trouble, an exotic locale established by stock shots and pantomime-level barroom sets with revolving fans on the ceiling, and "foreign" villains, played by familiar British character actors in false moustaches. The Saint ran from 1962 to 1969. Connoisseurs reckon the earlier, black and white shows are superior to the later colour seasons. From 1979 to 1980, there was a follow-up, The Return of the Saint, in which sufficiently ironic Ian Ogilvy donned Templar's polo neck, but the format seemed outmoded in comparison with The Sweeney and The Professionals. The pair are united in a delightful musical adventure through the animated-animal population of the underworld of New Orleans. All manner of rascally criminals are pursuing Ann-Marie but with the help of reformed German shepherd Charlie she defeats them. This is a classic childrens' fantasy adventure film packed with thrills laughter and puppy love.
