Mind Ripper | DVD | (05/09/2002)
from £14.89
| Saving you £-8.90 (N/A%)
| RRP Shot in Bulgaria and Canada, with a "Wes Craven Presents" caption--that doubtless has something to do with the producer being Craven's son--Mind Ripper started out as The Hills Have Eyes, Part 3 but turned into yet another re-run of the plot about the genetically-engineered super-being-cum-brain-eating-monster who gets loose in an underground research station and slaughters scientists one by one in grisly fashion. After most of the original cast members are killed, craggy Lance Henriksen turns up with his family to provide a fresh set of characters to be chased, menaced, jumped on, cranially sucked and splattered. The monster, acronymed THOR (Dan Blom), is a would-be suicide volunteered for a new serum created by the sinister GenTec Corporation. He turns into a bald steroid case with yellow contact lenses and a Cronenbergian brain-leeching tentacle tongue, and meagre attempts are made at wringing pathos out of his plight (uniquely, the monster has an irrelevant dream sequence in which he is killed by the heroine). It's competent but formulaic stuff, with reliable Henriksen carrying more than his weight at the head of a cast of then-unknowns, some of whom (Giovanni Ribisi, Natasha Gregson Wagner) have gone on to improve their careers. On the DVD: there are frame captures passed off as a photo gallery and the trailer; and the picture is fullscreen. But what else can you expect?--Kim Newman

Jason And The Argonauts | DVD | (27/09/2004)
from £N/A
| Saving you £N/A (N/A%)
| RRP This version of Jason and the Argonauts is not a remake of the classic 1963 Ray Harryhausen feature, but a new re-telling of the Greek legend. It takes just as many liberties with the saga, but--with a running time twice as long as the original--it packs in much more of the story, building to an exciting finale filled with betrayal, retribution and copious sword-play. Made by mini-series specialists Hallmark, who also produced a lavish version of Homer's The Odyssey (1997), only the rapid fades where the commercial breaks would be really give away the fact that this is a TV feature. The multinational cast is variable, and while Jason London is unhappily wooden in the title role, such stars as Denis Hopper and Frank Langella are good value, American accents aside. Coming straight from the big screen sword and sandal epic, Gladiator, Derek Jacobi adds sheer class, while Jolene Blalock makes a breathtaking debut as Medea. The visual atmosphere is strong; the superb cinematography varying between lush beauty and the stark, sun-bleached look of Pitch Black. Production values are excellent, with several increasingly powerful and spectacular action set-pieces incorporating outstanding (for TV) CGI effects, the whole being immeasurably lifted by British composer Simon Boswell's splendid musical score.--Gary S. Dalkin

The Criminal | DVD | (08/10/2001)
from £10.23
| Saving you £9.76 (95.41%)
| RRP Despite being overshadowed by the welter of inferior, identikit cockney gangster movies, The Criminal is an invigorating and sophisticated crime thriller; deftly handling its theme of conspiracy, tinged with subtle comic moments, yet rife with tension and paranoia. In an assured performance of complexity, Steven Mackintosh plays J, a musician whose chance meeting with a beautiful blonde (Natasha Little in perfect femme-fatale form) brings some adventure in to his uneventful life. When she is brutally murdered, the unsuspecting and confused J is thrust in to a nightmare of corruption and conspiracy, doggedly pursued by two police officers (the superbly foul-mouthed Bernard Hill and Holly Aird) as well as a shadowy criminal elite (watch for a wonderful cameo from comedian Eddie Izzard as a shady informant). A thoroughly impressive debut from director Julian Simpson, the film maintains an uneasy, claustrophobic atmosphere, bolstered by Simpson's ear for decent dialogue (particularly the innovative opening), storytelling prowess and visual flair. Fresh, imaginative and enthralling, The Criminal is a gem waiting to be discovered and a perfect antidote to lazy gangster cash-ins. On The DVD: director Simpson offers an informative and chatty commentary that provides excellent insight into how such a visually stylish film was made so economically. The cast and crew also offer interview soundbites, as well as biographies and a trailer. --Danny Graydon
