Inspired by the character and early works of James Herriot, the much loved English veterinary surgeon and author of the bestselling works ‘All Creatures Great and Small’, Young James Herriot finds James at the birth of his career in the 1930s, taking up his place at the Glasgow Veterinary College. From his first day as a young student, James suffers the pranks of his associates, makes new friends, and discovers that the lodging he had paid for doesn’t exist. Thrust immediately into hard times, his newfound friends find him a room with them at the house of the eccentric Aunt Elspeth. James is confident and inspired – but he soon discovers that a good deal more than confidence and inspiration are needed to assess the physical health of animals and, in some cases, the emotional health of his acquaintances. As he attempts to mend sick horses, ailing sheep and a kennel of purebred dogs, he soon discovers that life and medicine is much more complicated than he first thought; and that passion – no matter how well-intentioned – can be a very deceptive guide. • Species [1995]Species | DVD | (01/02/2000) from £9.99   |  Saving you £6.00 (60.06%)   |  RRP £15.99

There's a kind of perverse marketing genius at work in this cheesy sci-fi hit from 1995 in which scientists create a half-human, half-alien woman named Sil (Natasha Henstridge) who's capable of morphing from a slimy, tentacled creature into a blonde babe with the body of a Playboy centrefold. This makes it easy for Sil to lure gullible guys who are only too willing to indulge her voracious mating urge, realising too late that sex with Sil is anything but safe. As the body count rises, a handpicked team of specialists tracks the alien's killing spree, but their diverse expertise is barely a match for the ever-morphing Sil. Borrowing elements of the Alien movies (including bizarre alien designs by Swedish artist HR Giger) and spicing them up with some tantalising nudity, Species is a wet dream for creature-feature fans--kind of like watching a sci-fi vampire fantasy while browsing through the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com

  • Species 2 [1998]Species 2 | DVD | (29/07/2005) from £6.98   |  Saving you £9.01 (129.08%)   |  RRP £15.99

They could fuck the human race out of existence!" warns Michael Madsen in this inevitable--and inevitably contrived--sequel to 1995's surprise sci-fi hit. He's referring to a celebrated astronaut (Justin Lazard) infected with alien DNA from his history-making Mars landing, and the half-alien Eve (Natasha Henstridge), who was created from alien-human embryo splicing by biochemist Dr Laura Baker (Marg Helgenberger) in an effort to discover the alien species' vulnerabilities on Earth. While the astronaut sows his gruesomely wild oats with doomed women (resulting in a bevy of creepy kids in alien cocoons), Eve goes into heat until she and the astronaut can consummate their procreative lust. Sex and death are served up like money-shots in a porno flick, with an emphasis on gory flesh-regeneration, explosive pregnancies and slimy-tentacled intercourse. All of which makes this is the kind of derivative schlock that only a true fan could love, but it's boosted to a tolerable level of entertainment by the returning cast (Madsen, Henstridge and Helgenberger) from the previous film. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com

Few would have guessed from its initial headline-grabbing shock tactics, but the BBC's This Life went on to become one of the most influential television dramas of the 1990s. The show's creators certainly went for the jugular with liberal smatterings of sex, drugs and general debauchery--not many television shows then or now come with an 18 certificate. But beneath all the surface gloss lay a drama of real substance. The first 11 episodes begin with the five individuals coming together in London's legal world and then take us through their shared experiences. This Life's great strength was that there was enough drama between the main protagonists to maintain the show's momentum, while introducing just the right amount of secondary characters (Delilah, Ferdy)--a trick that Queer as Folk, perhaps the show's natural successor, was also to employ. The chemistry between the leading players has rarely been bettered since and, all in all, This Life has aged not a jot. On the DVD: while there is little in the way of extra features, the DVD format suits This Life perfectly. And where 430 minutes of VHS would be too unwieldy, this two-disc collection is sharp and snappy. The menu layout is excellent, enabling easy access to those classic moments, and the hip soundtrack (The Prodigy, Iggy Pop, Dubstar) sounds crisp and clear. --Phil Udell
