Spanning his life from his younger years to the time leading up to his death, the film explores the story behind this legendary figure. Nurtured by the notorious bushranger Harry Power (Russell Crowe) and fuelled by the unfair arrest of his mother (Essie Davis), Kelly recruits a wild bunch of warriors to plot a campaign of anarchy and rebellion that will grip the entire country. An approaching Alien spaceship is detected on monitoring equipment at UNIT HQ, where the Brigadier is entertaining two visitors - Chinn, a civil servant making a security inspection, and Bill Filer, an American agent sent to discuss the threat of the Master. The Ship lands in England and the UNIT team, joined by Hardiman and Winser from the nearby Nuton power station, meet its occupants: beautiful golden-skinned humanoids called Axons. The Axons claim that their ship, Axos, is damaged and that they need time in which to repair it. In return, they offer Axonite, a substance that can cause animals to grow to enormous sizes and thus end food shortages. The Doctor is suspicious, and rightly so: Axos, Axonite and the Axons - whose true appearance is hideous - are all part of a single parasitic entity brought to Earth by the Master to feed on the planet's energy. The Doctor manages to materialise his TARDIS, with the Master on board, at the centre of Axos. He offers to link the two ships together to make one giant time machine, on condition that Axos in return helps him to take revenge on the Time Lords for exiling him to earth. This is merely a trick, however, and Axos is locked in a time loop from which it can never escape. The Doctor returns to Earth in the TARDIS, where he reluctantly admits to the Brigadier that the Master may also have escaped.

The Human Centipede: First SequenceFilm Director Tom Six's Award winning vision begins with The Human Centipede (First Sequence). Here we are introduced to retired surgeon Dr Heiter, a man who harbours a sick lifetime fantasy of being the first person to create a Siamese triplet. He just requires the necessary pieces. Two pretty American girls walk unwittingly up to his door in search of help when their car breaks down and find themselves on his operating table, alongside another hapless Japanese tourist Heiter has acquired for his project. In 100% medically accurate detail Dr Heiter first describes to his ensnared patients the operation which will take place in order to conjoin them via their gastric systems, then commences his twisted surgery to create The Human Centipede. The Human Centipede 2: Full SequenceLike a Centipede's segments The Human Centipede (First Sequence) is inextricably joined to The Human Centipede 2 (Full Sequence) where we find mentally disturbed car park attendant Martin obsessed with watching Tom Six's film. Pushed to the brink by his belligerent mother and haunted by the teasing voices of his abusive and imprisoned father, Martin plans to emulate Heiter's Centipede by creating his own version. In brutal juxtaposition Martin has no surgical skills, nor access to surgical implements. Anaesthesia is replaced by crowbar, stitches and sutures replaced by staple guns and duct tape, scalpels replaced by various household tools. What follows is one of the most harrowing and terrifying films ever conceived. The 1991 Christmas Special of the best-loved UK sitcom of its time, Only Fools and Horses: Miami Twice is a two-parter which takes Del Boy and Rodney on a transatlantic jaunt that turns out to be more than the jolly boys' excursion they'd bargained for. The action begins in Peckham, with the christening of Del's recently born child Damien. Never without an eye for the main chance, Del takes the vicar aside and outlines a scheme to save "vicar hours" and get a "nicker and a bit ahead" by "pre-blessing" lorry loads of Romanian wine he's arranged to be imported, selling them on to other clergymen. Rodney, meanwhile, has received a pensions fund rebate and Del unscrupulously engineers it so that the pair of them jet off to Miami where he looks forward to showing off his leopardskin trunks. The first part of Miami Twice is classic stuff, featuring the familiar ensemble with some vintage idiocy from Trigger and some hilarious farce involving a baby intercom. The second part, however, set in America, is a let-down, involving as it does a rather lame and far-fetched plot in which Del turns out to be the double of a local Don (an excuse for David Jason to deliver a hackneyed Godfather impersonation). A cameo from Richard Branson feels like product placement and generally the Trotters feel all at sea when off their home turf. A Christmas audience, stuffed with pudding, would have indulged this over-rich fare but there's no reason to come back for seconds. Still, it's worth it for the first 50 minutes. On the DVD: Only Fools and Horses: Miami Twice has no special features on DVD but holds up well visually, albeit unable to rid the original of blights such as a distracting burst of studio light in the first part. --David Stubbs

  • Don't Look Now [1973]Don't Look Now | DVD | (29/07/2002) from £5.54   |  Saving you £8.45 (152.53%)   |  RRP £13.99

Don't Look Now was filmed in 1973 and based around a Daphne Du Maurier novel. Directed by Nicolas Roeg, it has lost none of its chill: like Kubrick's The Shining, its dazzling use of juxtaposition, colour, sound and editing make it a seductive experience in cinematic terror, whose aftershock lingers in daydreams and nightmares, filling you with uncertainty and dread even after its horrific climax. Donald Sutherland plays John Baxter, an architect, Julie Christie his wife: a well-to-do couple whose young daughter drowns while out playing. Cut to Venice, out of season, where the couple encounter a pair of sisters, one of whom claims psychic powers and to have communicated with their dead daughter. The subsequent plot is as labyrinthine as the back streets of the city itself, down which Baxter spots a diminutive and elusive red-coated figure akin to his daughter, before being drawn into an almost unbearable finale. Don't Look Now is a Gothic masterpiece, with its melange of gore, mystery, ecstasy, the supernatural and above all grief, while the city of Venice itself--which thanks to Roeg and his team seems to breathe like a dark, sinister living organism throughout the movie--deserves a credit in its own right. Not just a magnificent drama but an advanced feat of cinema. --David Stubbs
