Street Dance: The Moves
John River (Stellan Skarsgärd The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, Insomnia) is a gifted police officer with a secret. As a man haunted by manifestations of the dead, including a tormenting killer, Thomas Cream (Eddie Marsan - Ray Donovan) and the murder victims whose secrets he must unlock, he walks a tightrope between maintaining respectability at work and managing his own fragile state of mind. His colleague and confidant, Detective Sergeant Jackie Stevie Stevenson (Nicola Walker - Last Tango in Halifax) lends River the emotional support he so badly needs, whilst his boss, Chief Inspector Chrissie Reid (Lesley Manville - An Adventure In Space and Time) is conflicted between River s obvious talents and his evident problems. Adrift in a London full of other exiled souls, River s own isolation helps him connect with the troubled victims who crash into his world, and to see the truth in ways his colleagues are drawn to admire and question, in equal measure. But as his long-held defences are eroded by love and loss, River is torn between the living and the dead; will he have to choose once and for all?

Howards End is E M Forster's beautifully subtle story of the criss-crossing paths of the privileged and those they disdain--and of a remarkable pair of women who can see beyond class distinctions. Dramatic and tragic but also surprisingly funny, this James Ivory film focuses on a pair of unmarried sisters (Emma Thompson, who won an Oscar, and Helena Bonham Carter) who befriend a poor young clerk (Sam West) and, without meaning to, ruin his life. Meanwhile, Thompson also makes the acquaintance of a dying neighbour (Vanessa Redgrave), who leaves her a family home in her will--which her husband (Anthony Hopkins) destroys. But, ironically, he meets and falls in love with Thompson, even as their paths once more intersect with the increasingly miserable young clerk. Ruth Prawer Jhabvala's beautifully economical script also won an Oscar.--Marshall Fine

Giuseppe Tornatore's beautiful 1988 film about a little boy's love affair with the movies deservedly won an Oscar for Best Foreign Film and a Special Jury Prize at Cannes. Philippe Noiret plays a grizzled old projectionist who takes pride in his presentation of screen dreams for a town still recovering from World War II. When a child (Jacques Perrin) demonstrates fascination not only for movies but also for the process of showing them to an audience, a lifelong friendship is struck. This isn't just one of those films for people who are already in love with the cinema. But if you are one of those folks, the emotional resonance between the action in Tornatore's world and the images on Noiret's screen will seem all the greater--and the finale all the more powerful. --Tom Keogh
