Donizetti: Don Pasquale - Juan Diego Florez
Tooting Broadway is an urban crime drama set in 2009, whose South London location lends a gritty feel to a fast paced story that highlights a rarely seen gang culture.24 hours before the Tamil protests outside the Houses of Parliament, Arun (Nav Sidhu) returns home to stop his younger brother Ruthi (Kabelan Verlkumar) from participating in a criminal act that could ruin his life. Arun is granted a day by his mysterious employer, Marcus (Oliver Cotton) to talk Ruthi round. Once back he meets an old flame, Kate (Elizabeth Henstridge) who is struggling with a big decision herself, while Aruns friendship with gang leader, Karuna (San Shella) threatens to suck him back into a world he left behind. The political tension provides the backdrop for Aruns need to forge a life away from his past misdeeds versus his obligation to his family, friends and his Tamil roots.Tooting Broadway shows a community and unfamiliar subculture; Sri Lankan Tamil Gangs whose infamy is such that Scotland Yard have their own task force dedicated to stopping them. Using the themes of family, loyalty and honour Tooting Broadway has a broad appeal to a wide audience.

Even though this violent indie film has "exploitation" stamped all over it--with its gratuitous car chases, shootouts, and anarchistic characters--it is a guilty pleasure. Unfolding in the future--well, at least at the time of its release it was a decade ahead of schedule--this movie shows how US urban schools have deteriorated to the point that gangs run the classroom and the police, scared to even go near these educational wastelands, use hired goons to keep law and order there. (In fact, the US government now has a Department of Educational Defence.) In Class of 1999, a corporate representative (Stacy Keach), eager to rake in potential billions in government contracts, convinces a Seattle-area school principal (Malcolm McDowell) to test out three lifelike android teachers (including Pam Grier). This technological trio possesses intelligence and superhuman strength, which offer to both educate and discipline the bad apples at school. Unfortunately, the androids quickly move from harsh discipline such as spankings and beatings to murder, and Keach's corporate scumbag convinces McDowell's educator that despite this, the program needs to stay its course. Thus it is up to a newly paroled ex-gang member (Bradley Gregg) and the principal's daughter (Traci Lind) to uncover the teachers' identities and alert students and rival gangs to the impending danger. Despite its formulaic approach and some plot implausibilities, Mark Lester's film is entertaining to watch, especially with such exchanges as this: "So they've been waging war with my students." "Well, isn't that what all teachers do?" --Bryan Reesman, Amazon.com

She gives the boys some ""specialized"" deliveries to make them late for the contest. The
The connection between National Geographic and The Lord of the Rings may seem tentative, but the illuminating TV special Beyond the Movie proves otherwise. While incorporating cast and crew interviews and film clips from director Peter Jackson's 2001 blockbuster The Fellowship of the Ring, this hour-long documentary transcends timely opportunism to explore the myriad inspirations for JRR Tolkien's Middle-Earth fantasy classic, beginning with the influence of Tolkien's idyllic childhood in rural England, which served as the model for his threatened Hobbit paradise. Equally fascinating are the influences of Tolkien's experience in World War I and the "evil" of industrial development on his work, and more directly those of Anglo-Saxon poetry (notably Beowulf) and the mythology of the Finnish Kalevala, which formed the basis of Tolkien's elvish culture. The author's passion for nature conservancy and cultural preservation are what ultimately serve the National Geographic agenda, but eloquent testimonials by archaeologists, anthropologists, and filmmakers make this a most agreeable hour of justified propaganda. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com
