Made in 1975 and directed by Paul Verhoeven, Katie Tippel ("Katie the Streetwalker") is a handsome period drama set in 19th-century Holland, based on a true story. The second eldest daughter in a poor, Friesland family who move to Amsterdam, Katie (Monique Van de Ven) must find whatever work is going to make ends meet. She has already learnt to have no faith in her weak father. Now, as she enters a succession of jobs in which she experiences both exploitation and sexual harassment, she learns that men want her only for one thing. Duly, at the behest of her own mother, she enters into prostitution. However, when she becomes model to an artist, she is finally able to escape the poverty trap and ascend the social ladder, particularly when banker Hugo (Rutger Hauer) takes her as his lover. All this is set against a backdrop of social foment as the workers' impatience at poor social conditions increases. Although director Verhoeven, as well as Hauer and cinematographer Jan De Bont eventually became involved in mainstream American movies, Katie Tippel is very much of the European school of filmmaking: episodic and harsh in its depiction of everyday poverty. The dead puppy at the beginning definitely marks it out as being contrary to Hollywood's near-zero canine mortality rate. The sexual scenes are graphic to the point of gratuitousness but always grimly non-titillating. Budgetary limits cramp some of the mass street scenes, but generally the film is beautifully shot and ageless in feel. A far cry, certainly, from Showgirls, for which Verhoeven was later responsible. --David Stubbs

In Price of Glory a promising young boxer is knocked out of contention thanks to a sleazy manager who cashed out on his potential by pushing him into a big-money fight before he was ready. Thirteen years later that very same boxer, Arturo Ortega (Jimmy Smits), has three sons whom he's training to be boxers too. His schoolteacher wife wants to make sure they get good grades, but Arturo is sure that boxing is their best chance to get out of the barrio. Flash-forward another 10 years, and the training is paying off. The three boys, Jimmy (Clifton Collins Jr.), Sonny (Jon Seda), and especially Johnny (Ernesto Hernández) have grown into smart and talented boxers. Obviously, Arturo is a good and a tough trainer, but the question of whether he's got his own or his sons' best interests at heart arises when a slick promoter (Ron Perlman) offers him big money first for his sons' contracts and then for a series of title fights. Price of Glory does an admirable job of riding that conundrum throughout, offering no easy answers. There is solid acting throughout and it's nice to see such a Latino-heavy cast, but at just over two hours the pace lags and the central themes are repeated one or two too many times. Aside from a late subplot about corruption and violence that comes across as a bit contrived, this is a good family film about boxing. --Andy Spletzer, Amazon.com

Jean-Luc Godard directs this allegorical cine-essay meditating on the history, culture, philosophy and economics of modern Europe. Described by Godard as 'a symphony in three movements', the film opens with a depiction of Europe as a luxury cruise ship in the Mediterranean sea, peopled with passengers of many countries, backgrounds and languages. The second segment, set in France, unfolds as a family drama in which two children summon their parents to a 'tribunal of their childhood', demanding answers on the themes of liberty, equality, and fraternity. The third section traces an abstract and non-chronological history of the West, taking in the Mediterranean territories of Egypt, Palestine, Odessa, Hellas, Naples, and Barcelona through a montage of film clips, images and music.

  • Paul Simon - You're The One [2000]Paul Simon - You're The One | DVD | (07/01/2002) from £23.76   |  Saving you £-8.77 (-58.50%)   |  RRP £14.99

You’re the One is a recording of Paul Simon’s intimate and critically acclaimed Paris concerts. Filmed at two informal venues in the city during October 2000, this live recording features songs stretching from his Simon and Garfunkel days (“Bridge Over Troubled Water”), to tracks such as “That’s Where I Belong” from his more recent You’re the One album. Containing footage shot at two venues on different days the recording is predominantly focused on the stage action. Adding a claustrophobic edge to the show, but reflecting his omnivorous musical tastes and influences, Simon gathers together a diverse array of his multi-cultural musical pals. At times, particularly when the songs are less familiar, the show does drag. Sporting a red baseball cap, and not moving from the same spot on stage for two hours, Simon’s demeanour and vocals do become rather irritating. Perhaps only true fans will appreciate such moments, but as his substantial back-catalogue demonstrates, the real magic resides in his intricate lyrics and rhythm. On the DVD: although the concert footage is particularly colourful and of excellent quality there are no substantial extras. The audio content is equally outstanding, with the soundtrack available in 5.1 and DTS Surround Sound, and PCM Linear PCM Stereo. Subtitles of the English song lyrics are also available on the disc. --John Galilee

John Schlesinger's solid adaptation of Thomas Hardy's novel sees three rival suitors vying for the affections of the beautiful Bathsheba Everdene (Julie Christie decked out in a variety of bonnets and frilly dresses), who has just inherited a farm. The men in her life are stout, whiskered yeoman Gabriel Oak (Alan Bates), an impoverished local farmer; neurotic, repressed squire William Boldwood (Peter Finch); and handsome rascal Sgt Troy (Terrence Stamp), who dresses as if he's Flashman and breaks women's hearts for a hobby. Thanks to cameraman Nic Roeg and production designer Richard MacDonald (who also worked for Joseph Losey), 19th-century Dorset looks as pretty and as picturesque as a John Constable reproduction on top of a biscuit tin. Not that Schlesinger or screenwriter Frederic Raphael underplay the duress of rural life. We see the hardship of the farm workers' lives as the seasons turn. The film opens with a spectacular sequence in which Gabriel Oak's dog drives his flock of sheep over a cliff, thereby forcing him into penury. Whether hunger or heartbreak, every character here suffers. Bathsheba (like the model Christie plays in Darling) is a free-spirit in a society in which women's rights are severely restricted. --Geoffrey Macnab

  • Farscape: Complete Season 1 (Box Set) [1999]Farscape: Complete Season 1 (Box Set) | DVD | (28/10/2002) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £99.99

The first series of Farscape was a revitalising tonic for TV SF. An ambitious coproduction of Jim Henson's Creature Shop, Australia's Channel 9 and Hallmark Entertainment, Farscape launched itself with a refreshing mix of CGI, prosthetics and state-of-the-art puppetry to take a visual leap beyond other genre shows. The witty scripts, too, peppered with double-entendres and pop-culture references, are light years away from the staid style of Star Trek. Admittedly, the first season's basic premise is simply Buck Rogers updated (American astronaut John Crichton, played by Ben Browder, is catapulted to a far-flung galaxy populated by strange aliens), while the crew initially have something of Blake's 7 about them (a motley bunch of escaped convicts pursued by a relentless foe), and ideas like the living ship are borrowed from Babylon 5, but the Farscape concept has a freshness that makes it all look and feel completely original. --Mark Walker
