  Released in 1988, Le Maître de Musique ("The Music Teacher") is a film of its time. Director Gerard Corbiau unashamedly merges elements of Amadeus, Diva and Les Liasons Dangereuses in this tale of passion and intrigue, set in France just before World War One--hence the extracts from suitably valedictory Mahler scores. Already established as a world-class baritone, José van Dam here demonstrates his acting credentials as the world-weary Joachim Dallayrac, anxious to pass on his acquired knowledge to his protégés: the impressionable Sophie (stylishly played by Anne Roussel), and the former conman Jean (over-earnestly taken by Phillipe Volter). The loyalty and rebellion that govern the relationships between teacher and pupils is put to the test with their appearance at a singing contest hosted by Prince Scotti (vividly souped-up by Patrick Bauchau) whom Dallayrac had defeated in a similar event 20 years before. The outcome is intensely theatrical, with Art triumphing over ambition in no uncertain terms. This is enjoyable viewing, but not a film to go back to often. On the DVD: Le Maître de Musique is presented on disc in a 16:9 aspect ratio that reproduces decently, though with a certain dimness in indoor scenes. There are English-only subtitles, but not with the original trailer. The screen biography of Gerard Corbiau merely reproduces what is in the booklet, while the half-dozen stills are an attractive but hardly major addition. --Richard Whitehouse

  If nothing else, Doggystyle indicates a remarkable, if not exactly commendable, honesty in the relationship between Snoop Dogg and his fans. Snoop recognises that his absurdly wealthy, sexually indulged, permanently stoned persona is admired chiefly by priapic 14-year-old boys who don't understand why girls won't speak to them, and young men who think a booming car stereo is a signifier of awesome masculinity. He has delivered to these constituencies precisely the kind of video they would want. Doggystyle does not trouble itself with any actual promotional clips or artist interviews. Though Snoop occasionally deigns to wander in front of the camera and mime half-heartedly along to one of his songs, this is essentially a porn film, which is appropriate given that most of what Snoop has recorded in the last few years resembles uncannily the glutinous muzak that usually serves as a soundtrack for such things. It is not without amusement value, wholly inadvertent though this is--the editing of this "Soft" version of Doggystyle, intended to make it saleable in shops which are not patronised exclusively by men in overcoats, occasionally lends the joyless copulations of Snoop's mates a certain comedic appeal. --Andrew Mueller

  Elijah Wood has one of his first post-Frodo leading roles in the mild-mannered comedy All I Want (the original title of which was Try Seventeen in its film festival showings). He's a 17-year-old college dropout who moves into a funky old apartment building and becomes intrigued by his wacky neighbours. Mandy Moore plays the self-absorbed actress across the hall and Run Lola Run goddess Franka Potente is a cranky photographer. The movie has a few surprises (the casting seems to suggest a teenybopper romance for Wood and Moore, but not so fast), although the energy level rarely perks up and it's pretty thin on actual narrative happenings. Wood's tendency toward fantasy is an especially tired device. A furtive sense of humour, plus the big adoring close-ups of the highly photogenic leading ladies, provides the low-key interest. Trivia: Elizabeth Perkins plays the hero's irresponsible mum; she was also Elijah Wood's mother in Avalon. --Robert Horton
