Orchestra Rehearsal (1978): In this sly social and political allegory an orchestra assembles for a rehearsal under the inquisitive lenses of a TV crew. With their bullish union officials lingering on the sidelines the musicians introduce themselves one by one expounding with wit passion and rancour about the characteristics of their instruments. The rehearsal begins under the baton of an autocratic conductor and soon the musicians' bawdy humour turns to anarchy as he tries to impose his will on this diverse group of players... Featuring a superlative score from Nina Rota (The Godfather 1 & 2 expert cinematography from Guiseppe Rotunno (The Leopard) and ingenious production design from Dante Ferretti (Gangs of New York). And The Ship Sails On (1983): Italian cinematic maestro Federico Fellini (La Dolce Vita 8 1/2) shows that even in his mid-sixties he had lost none of his power to shock entertain and amaze with And The Ship Sails On his haunting and majestic 'comedy of arias'. Made in 1983 the film is set on the eve of the first world war but this matters little to the peacock parade of opera celebrities who cast off on a luxury liner to scatter the ashes of the world's greatest diva near her native adriatic island. yet their gilded world is about to receive a chill blast of reality. The captain has rescued a group of serbian refugees and an enemy battleship looms on the horizon demanding their surrender. Unbeknown to the passengers their old order is about to be eradicated on a global scale and the ship sails on to a fate as inevitable as that of the Titanic. Ginger And Fred (1986: In this wonderfully affectionate and satirical 1986 film italian cinematic maestro Federico Fellini (La Dolce Vita 8 1/2) celebrates the legacy of Rogers and Astaire - and sends up tacky television - with this touching tale of two elderly dancers who model themselves on cinem's greatest dance duo and who reunite after 30 years for one final TV dance spectacular. starring two of Italy's greatest acting talents: Cannes `best actress' winner Giulietta Masina (Nights Of Cabiria Juliet Of The Spirits La Strada) and oscar nominee Marcello Mastroianni (La Dolce Vita Divorce Italian Style).
Ira Levin's scary novel about forced conformity in a small Connecticut town made for this compelling 1975 thriller. Katharine Ross stars as a city woman who moves with her husband to Stepford and is startled by how perpetually happy many of the local women seem to be. Her search for an answer reveals a plot to replace troublesome real wives with more accommodating fake ones (not unlike the alien takeover in The Invasion of the Body Snatchers). The closer she gets to the truth, the more danger she faces--not to mention the likelihood that the men in town intend to replace her as well. Screenwriter William Goldman (Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid) and director Bryan Forbes (King Rat) made this a taut, tense semi-classic with a healthy dose of satiric wit. The DVD release presents the film in its original widescreen dimensions. --Tom Keogh, Amazon.com

The only law a gun, the only shelter wild bush... In August 1851, the discovery of gold in Ballarat, Australia, sent shockwaves across the world. Hordes of adventurers flocked to the new land of the golden dream, encountering a harsh, frequently violent land. Despoiled by bushrangers, brutalised by the old convict system and torn by class conflicts, it took a certain kind of settler to rise to the challenges of the new country. Boston-born Christopher Cobb is one of those people. Seasoned with experience gained in the Californian gold rush, Chris's job is to find rights of way through the arid terrain of New South Wales, survey new lines of communication, and secure lucrative contracts for his expanding stagecoach business. He is a gentleman, yet no stranger to violence, and possesses an inherent hatred of injustice in any form - a trait that leads him into highly dangerous situations. In a land that has no sympathy for weaklings, Chris becomes whatever man he needs to be to. American actor Peter Graves (Mission: Impossible) brought his sun-bleached good looks to this joint venture between ATV/ ITC and the Australian Seven Network, with input from an American production crew and writers, Whiplash transposed the frontier drama of the classic western to the heat and dust of the bush and Cobb defended himself with a bullwhip rather than a pistol. First broadcast in the UK in 1960, Whiplash features fast-moving scripts, including several by future Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry, and a memorably rousing theme composed by Edwin Astley and sung by international star Frank Ifield. This complete series is released here for the very first time.
