Occupied Europe endured four long years of Nazi domination in World War II. Angered by the defensive strategy which had brought disaster to Allied forces in 1940 British Prime Minister Winston Churchill demanded an elite raiding force - specially formed to take the fight back to Nazi-occupied countries and bring hope to the people enslaved there. The result was the Commandos initially ten units each of 500 men recruited from every regiment and corps in the British Army. They were supremely fit and highly skilled experts in unarmed combat and trained to use a variety of weapons. They operated behind enemy lines in intense danger - any Commando taken prisoner was to be executed immediately on Hitler's orders. From the Commandos came the Paras a troop of men trained to use parachutes to drop them into enemy territory. Archive footage from the Paras' and Commandos' greatest raids and interviews with former commandos are brought together in this programme to bring their famous exploits back to life: Bruneval Saint Nazaire Dieppe Pegasus Bright and Operation Market Garden.

Disc 1 - Thunderclap: In the closing stages of the Second World War Air Marshal ""Bomber"" Harris took the controversial decision to target civilians by laying waste to German cities. With waves of bombers crossing the German border many towns and cities were razed to the ground. One such city was Dresden. Tens of thousands of people were killed in the attacks that ultimately realised their intentions that of crushing the German people's morale and bringing the war to an early end. However the debate still continues; was Air Marshal Harris the murderer of innocent civilians or simply a man with strong enough ideals to adopt a tactic which would ultimately lead to victory over the German war machine? Disc 2 - Operation Gomorrha: The aerial bombing in the summer of 1943 devastated the people port and buildings of Hamburg reducing a once prosperous city to nothing more than a pile of ashes. Whilst Allied bombers pounded the city the terrified citizens took cover in cellars and purpose-built bomb shelters in hopes of enduring the raids. Survivors emerged to find their city engulfed in flames in what was to become known as the Hamburg Firestorm. With the level of destruction; culture and architecture being completely destroyed the city was never to recover to its former glory. Such was the nature of the onslaught that scars of the aftermath of the bombings still remain to this day. Disc 3 - Operation Millennium: As American troops entered the city of Cologne in March 1945 they were awestruck at the scene of utter devastation which lay before them. The once great city had been targeted as part of the Allied ""Terror Bombing"" campaign a tactic that's morality is still debated today. Archive footage and eye witness accounts go only part of the way to describing the nightmare that had immersed what was Germany's fourth largest city.

Jamie Foxx stars in this biopic of legendary soul and R&B singer Ray Charles. Skilfully edited and with a keen eye for period detail the narrative weaves in and out of the past in an interlocking tapestry of the man's rise to fame in the 1950s and '60s. Growing up poor black and blind in the rural south Charles learns under the tutelage of his tough-love mother (Sharon Warren) to turn these handicaps into assets. With this training Ray eventually plays his way into a major deal with Atlantic records and earns icon status as an American legend. Along the way the high cost of fame leads him to engage in abusive relationships manipulative behaviour and struggles with drug and alcohol problems. This is a dynamite film for the music alone (Charles's actual recordings are used in the film) but Foxx's career-benchmark performance transcends Ray's biopic roots turning this into a piercing full-on character study: unflinching sometimes harrowing and ultimately deeply moving. The sheer joy of Charles's music comes alive in Foxx's movements and his character matures convincingly and powerfully. A stellar supporting cast is on hand to back him up every step of the way including Larenz Tate as producer Quincy Jones and Kerry Washington as Ray's long-suffering wife Regina.

For five years during World War 2 the Nazis occupied Norway. They were plagued by organised resistance; relatively small numbers of brave men and women operating in the bleak and mountainous countryside. Theirs was a war of small actions and narrow escapes the threat of capture torture and death was constant - and successful attacks could result in reprisals on civilians. Fishing boats slipped in and out of the long Norwegian coastline carrying agents and information. `Radio Spied' monitored the German fleet in the distant and isolated fjords and provided weather reports for the D-Day landings. Specially trained commando forces prevented the movement of `heavy water' vital to Hitler's atomic bomb project. With the end of the war in Europe in May 1945 the 60 000 members of Milorg the resistance network took the surrender of the German garrison now swollen to 365 000 men. One of the greatest achievements of the Norwegian Resistance had been to tie down large numbers of Nazi troops who would otherwise have been fighting in mainland Europe.
