The Royal Air Force has defended Britain's skies and those of her Empire and allies for most of this century following the tradition estabished by its predecessors the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service. Spawned from both the British Army and the Royal Navy the R.A.F. fought hard to maintain its independence after the successes of the First World War. It was not until the Second World War however that the R.A.F. was able to show its true worth. While Fighter Command defended Britain from the Luftwaffe Bomber Command took the fight across the Channel into the war-torn skies over Germany. And while Coastal Command patrolled the vital sea lanes of the Atlantic Transport Command flew to all corners of the world supplying and reinforcing hard-presses ground forces. After the war the jet age brought a whole new series of discipines for the RAF. Going ever higher faster and further the RAF had to contend with the constant threat from the Soviet Union employing such great aircraft as the Vulcan the Hunter and the Lightning. In the modern age the RAF can call on some of the best technology - VSTOL Harriers Tornado fighters and bombers Jaguar Nimrod and Hercules. And the Eurofighter Typhoon will take the RAF into the 21st century.

In 1960 producer-director George Pal's The Time Machine reshaped HG Wells' thoughtful, ironic novel into a two-fisted action movie, but one that still appeals to children and adults immensely and deserves its classic status. Wells' themes of biological and social evolution are played down, but there is a surprisingly melancholy thread as Rod Taylor's Time Traveller keeps stopping off at future wars to find that human stupidity still persists. In the first week of 1900 a group of fussy Victorians gather in Taylor's chintzy, overstuffed parlour to hear him tell of his expedition to the future, where the world is divided between the surface-dwelling, childish, beautiful Eloi and the hideous, underground, cannibal Morlocks. Wells intended both factions to seem degenerate, the logical final evolution of the class system, but Pal has Taylor pull a Captain Kirk and side with the Eloi and teach them to fight against their oppressors. The time travel sequence remains a tour de force, with a shop window mannequin demonstrating a parade of fashions as the years fly by in seconds and charming but still-effective stop-motion effects. The future is a wonderfully coloured landscape with properly gruesome cave-dwelling monsters and a winning Eloi heroine in Yvette Mimieux. It may not be totally Wells, but it's a treat. On the DVD: The Time Machine arrives on disc in a lovely widescreen print which makes the film seem new all over again. The featurette "Time Machine: The Journey Back" combines some mild behind-the-scenes stuff about the film (and its star prop) with a moving mini-sequel reuniting stars Rod Taylor and Alan Young in a scene that actually addresses a plot point skipped over in the original. --Kim Newman

While RAF pilots spent every ounce of their energy in trying to hold back the relentless might of the Luftwaffe many bombers inevitably did get through to drop their deadly loads on the population below. Air Raid Wardens and Local Defence Volunteers helped head up the army of civilians who became embroiled in the conflict. Nurses Firemen Police and Lifeboat crews all played their part. So did girls who joined the Land Army went to work in armaments factories became billeting officers or took one of numerous other positions. These needed to be filled while their husbands fathers or brothers were fighting in the armed forces. 1940s Britain was a whole nation at war and the civilian population was also on the front line...

Some people possess extraordinary talents. Adolf Hitler and Winston Churchill were two such men and each was to shape the destiny of their nation. One was to become the very symbol of evil whilst the other seventy years on is still admired and respected throughout the world. Their names seem to radiate the very worst and the very best of the human spirit. The strategic battles of Churchill and Hitler explain why the Second World War casts such a shadow over subsequent generations. This is an epic tale one that is on the one hand horrifying and on the other uplifting. Under their respective commands two leaders Hermann Goering and Hugh Dowding implemented tactics and directed the world's leading Air Forces in battles that were to shape the Western World. Their genius at a tactical level should not be underestimated. This DVD investigates how genius can be found in both strategy and tactics in both 'the big picture' and in the daily horrors of war.
Should God forbid France fall we will need every available aircraft and every trained pilot to defend the shores of Britain from the invasion force which most surely will come. These words written by Air Chief Marshal Sir Hugh Dowding to Prime Minister Winston Churchill in May 1940 could not have been more true. There remained twenty miles or so of water between Hitler and Great Britain. Unless Hitler's Air Force had control of the skies between France and England any attempt to send an invasion force across that narrow strip of water would be disastrous. The stage was therefore set for an epic battle to control the skies over the English Channel and Southern England. Although aircraft production had been sufficiently increased fighter pilots took up to eighteen months to train. It was here that the RAF were in desperate need; and unless Britain's pilots could shoot down Luftwaffe aircraft at a rate of nearly four to one the RAF would be shot from the skies within weeks and Europe would become a secure fortress for the Third Reich. The defence of Britain and ultimately the free world therefore lay on the shoulders of a few hundred RAF pilots whose mission was to hold out at any cost... this remarkable new DVD tells the story of some of those pilots.
As news of the German surrender spread 8th May was declared Victory in Europe or VE-Day. Crowds took to the streets but the celebrations did not have the same hysterical joy as had greeted the end of the First World War. The second had gone on for longer and caused far greater world-wide death and destruction. It was the culmination of six years of bloody warfare which had devastated the continent and killed tens of millions of people and witnessed the true horror of the Nazi's Final Solution. People were exhausted and only too aware that the conflict must continue until Japan was also defeated. Special Features: 10 Individual Graphic Sequences from the Acclaimed Series (The Century of Warfare)
