PYAASA is the story of the life and loves of an unsuccessful poet who could achieve neither fame nor prosperity in his lifetime. Vijay is a poet whose poems none of the old traditional publishers accept. They want poems on love not on hunger. Vijay's home life is miserable. Since leaving College he has not settled down to any job. His brothers taunt and insult him and sell the paper on which his poems are written as waste papers to a grocer for a few annas. Vijay in trying to trace the papers finds that a woman has taken them away from the grocer. He then comes across the streetwalker who had taken away his manuscript and remembered his songs by heart. He tries to retrieve his manuscript but fails. Meanwhile Vijay goes to the annual function of his college to recite some poems of his. There he meets Meena the girl with whom he had a flaming romance in his College days. Meena is married to Mr. Ghosh a publisher who offers him a job in his establishment.However the job does not last for long as the publisher gets suspicious of Meena's attachment to Vijay and the poet is once again without a job. While still jobless Vijay learns of the death of his mother - the breaking of the last link with his home. He is desperate and depressed. A friend misleads him and gets him drunk and then takes him to the house of a dancing girl. There Vijay witnesses the tragedy of the fallen women and feels for them. In the same locality he again comes across the streetwalker who sensing his frustration gives him her sympathy and encouragement. But Vijay tells her that he has made up his mind to end his life. The streetwalker puts him to sleep but finds him missing the next morning. After a few days the newspaper announces the news of his death. After his death his poems are published and become a great success. The 'home' of the 'girl' turned out to be the residence of Aslam's uncle. Aslam unhesitantly promised to arrange Nawab's marriage with his (Aslam's) cousin Naseema.One day per chances Nawab arrived at Aslam's house when his eye's lighted on Aslam's wife Jamila he had a revelation. Aslam too learned for the first time that the beloved Nawab had sought fruitlessly was Jamila! Aslam was very much beholden Nawab. He therefore decided to ruin his own home in order to bring out Nawab's happiness. He started visiting the establishments of tawaaifs' (singing girl): so that he should gain notoriety Jamila's folks should ask for a divorce and then Jamila should be free to marry Nawab.Nawab and Naseema were scheduled to wed soon. There was a conflict in Aslam's mind. He could not bear to see his closest friend unhappy. What should he do?The conflict is resolved in the beautiful denouement of Guru Dutt's Chaudhvin Ka Chand.
Waqt ("Time") is a serious candidate for inclusion in any list of great Hindi movies. An early example of a "multi-starrer", it has four top heroes and two great heroines. Its melodramatic plot, based on a lost and found theme of a family separated by an earthquake in pre-partition Punjab and reunited later in Mumbai (Bombay), takes the viewer through a whole range of emotions. It set a whole new look for Hindi films, with a glamorous lifestyle that featured American cars, houses with sunken seating areas, red velvet carpets, grand pianos and lavish parties. Its songs are still much played today, especially "Ae mere zohrajabeen" ("My Beauty") and "Aage bhi jaane na tum" ("You Don't Know What Lies Ahead"). This was the first colour film made by BR Films and established Yash Chopra as a major filmmaker, a position he still holds some 40 years later. On the DVD:Waqt on DVD has good sound and picture quality and the eight songs can all be accessed separately from the menu. The subtitles are adequate and are given for both dialogue and songs. There's a theatrical trailer and an interview with Karan Johar (Kuch kuch hota hai, Kabhi khushi kabhie gham), one of the new generation of directors inspired by Yash Chopra. --Anika Puri
CID made in 1956 was the film that introduced two of the brightest stars of Hindi Cinema Waheeda Rehman and Mehmood. The film a thrilling murder mystery follows CID Inspector Shekhar in his search to find the murderer of a newspaper editor killed by Sher Singh (Mehmood) whom Shekhar bumps into at the scene of the crime chases in Rekha's car but who escapes. Master (Johny Walker)a common thief who witnesses the crime and is arrested as the murder suspect is later released by Shekhar. Sher Singh is ultimately arrested but Shekhar knowing that he is the front man for a big gangster continues the investigation. He is bribed by Kamini (Waheeda Rehman) to stop the investigation but he refuses. Meanwhile at the prison Sher Singh is killed by fellow prisoners planted there to silence him and Shekhar is implicated and tried for his murder.
