It's a bit heavy-handed with tenacious government agents who view the Starman as an alien threat (don't they always?), but Carpenter handles the action with intelligent flair, sensitivity and lighthearted humour. The picture is clear and sharp with very little grain. The soundtrack is crisp, perfectly complementing the romantic nature of this film. The show was pieced together from two different Japanese series. Normally the video cleaning process involves going back to the original prints but in this case they simply didn't exist. Starting with new film transfers from Hyaku Juu Oh Golion and Kik'' Kantai Dairugger XV we rebuilt Voltron from the ground up! All of the original footage was color-corrected and given a full revival to remove the imperfections on film. Once the pieces were in place it was time to edit...edit...and edit some more. Every episode now had to be re-created using the originals as guides. So frame by frame and scene by scene Voltron was reborn into existence once more. The video crew of AnimeWorks has taken the greatest of care to revive this classic series that introduced so many of us to Anime. Anyone expecting two hours of military instruction will be disappointed however. After the opening 10 minutes with the troops, the almost James-Bond-like story follows Lewis Collins (riding high in those days after TV's The Professionals) as he infiltrates a radical anti-Nuclear society. Operation: Destroy requires him to go undercover with their potentially insane leader Frankie (Judy Davis), ignoring his wife and child. The period detail is often the film's most entertaining feature as Collins tours across 1980s London constantly eluding spies on his tail. Apart from the endless permed hairdos and the fact that the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament hasn't got much to demonstrate about these days, there's the fashions and low-tech gadgetry to enjoy.
