  • Down By Law [DVD]Down By Law | DVD | (23/03/2015) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £15.99

Jim Jarmusch's Down by Law is in the same minimalist, oddball, black-and-white groove as his classic of American independent cinema, Stranger than Paradise (1984). The setting is Louisiana, where two losers (musicians Tom Waits and John Lurie) find themselves stuck in a jail cell together. One day they are joined by a boisterous Italian (Roberto Benigni), and the chemistry changes--suddenly an escape attempt is on the horizon. Conventional drama is not Jarmusch's intention; one of the emotional high points of this film is the three guys marching around their prison cell shouting, "I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream!" Yet the deadpan style creates its own humorous mood, underscored by melancholy (also underscored by the music of Lurie and the gravel-voiced songs of Waits). This was the first American film for Italian comedian Benigni, (Life is Beautiful), and he lights it up with his effervescent clowning. Jarmusch has said that Down by Law forms a loose trilogy with Stranger than Paradise and the subsequent Mystery Train (1989)--a triptych of disaffected, drifting life in the United States. Few filmmakers have ever surveyed ennui so entertainingly. --Robert Horton, Amazon.com

Edna (Cristina Galbo) and George (Ray Lovelock) are unlikey travelling companions - they met en-route when she backed her car into his motorbike and subsequently offered him a lift to his destination. Edna's sister Katie (Jeannine Mestre) is a prostitute addicted to heroin and when her husband is brutally murdered Katie is the chief suspect according to bitter local inspector (Arthur Kennedy). But Edna and George soon realise that inhabitants are being murdered as meals for the re-animated corpses of the morgue: the new pesticides used in the area are bringing the dead back to life and for sustenance they need human flesh. The Living Dead is widely recognised by horror fans as one of the best zombie movies ever made and the unlikely setting of pretty English countryside makes the flesh-tearing bone crunching zombies all the more shocking.

This documentary takes a look at the life and career of 'the Divine Ponytail' Roberto Baggio. Born in Caldogno on February 18th 1967 Roberto Baggio may be the greatest forward that Italy has ever produced. A career of remarkable highs and lows it always seemed that a triumph would quickly be followed by a disaster. Clearly one of the best players at the 1994 World Cup Baggio dragged the Italians into the final with his deft footwork incredible movement and sublime vision only to be denied by a wayward penalty kick in the shootout denouement to the final against Brazil (in truth they were probably beaten having already missed 2 in the shootout). At the end of his long and illustrious career Baggio had a veritable smorgasbord of titles and trophies for his efforts including: World Player of the Year 1993 European Footballer of the Year 1993 Series A Championship winners 1994/1995 and 1995/1996 and many more. All that and his international shirt number was retired when he bid farewell to the game - probably one of the greatest honours you can receive in the game. This documentary features interviews with residents from Roberto Baggio's hometown and the people who were influential in his life. Not only that but Baggio himself offers his own thoughts on his achievements. With a smattering of top quality footage of 'the Divine Ponytail' in action this is ideal viewing for fans of the player and the game.
