Introduced in "A Magnum for Schneider", the hour-long 1967 Armchair Theatre episode written by James Mitchell about a disillusioned British secret agent Callan (Edward Woodward), went on to offer four popular (if downbeat) series, a spin-off movie remaking the original story and a some-years-later wrap-up play "Wet Job". Remembered for its very distinctive opening titles, with a swinging broken light bulb and a memorable theme tune, the series adopted a Deighton-LeCarré approach to the grim, treacherous, grubby business of Cold War espionage and made a TV star of the intense Woodward as the sweaty, sometimes conscience-stricken, sometimes robotic Callan. Even in the 21st century this still seems a strong show, its complex stories and impressive performances outweighing a low-budget mix of video and film in the production that makes it seem less "professional" than other shows of the time. In a dramatic device that has long since fallen out of fashion in television, Callan episodes tend to wind up by leaving the audience to work out all the connections of the plot while Callan himself sits gloomily and ponders the wretchedness of his squalid world. --Kim Newman

  • Hornblower - The Duchess And The Devil [1999]Hornblower - The Duchess And The Devil | DVD | (03/02/2003) from £6.95   |  Saving you £3.04 (30.40%)   |  RRP £9.99

Based freely on the classic novels by C.S. Forester, Hornblower is a series of TV films following the progress of a young officer through the ranks of the British navy during the Napoleonic Wars. The series greatest asset is the handsome and charismatic Ioan Gruffudd in the lead role, surely a major star in the making. For television films the production values are very good, though as Titanic, Waterworld and The Perfect Storm demonstrated, filming an aquatic adventure is a very expensive business, and it is clear that the Hornblower dramas simply make the best of comparatively small budgets. No more faithful to Forester's books than the 1951 Gregory Peck classic Captain Horatio Hornblower, the real inspiration seems to have come from the success of Sharpe, starring Sean Bean, which likewise featured a British hero in the Napoleonic Wars. Nevertheless, while rather more easy going than the real British navy of the time, the Hornblower saga delivers an entertaining adventure, greatly enhanced by the presence of such guest stars as Denis Lawson, Cheri Lunghi, Ronald Pickup and Anthony Sher. "The Duchess and the Devil" has Hornblower and his men taken prisoners of war.--Gary S Dalkin

The story of a struggling rock band, 1992's Wild West suffered comparisons with The Commitments, which was released the year before. There similarities end, however, since the Honky Tonk Cowboys are made up of four Pakistani brothers from the West London suburb of Southall. There's tumbleweed in the street, saloon doors at home and barroom brawls at the Asian Rising Stars Talent Contest. Eldest brother Zaf (Naveen Andrews) looks the part in a ten-gallon hat and fringe jacket, but the mongrel neighbourhood is a long way from the Nashville the brother's dream about. Dogged by gangland thugs and the well-meant pursuit of traditional values from their poor mother (Lalita Ahmed), they stumble from one danger to another. The worst comes in the form of the beautiful Rifat (Sarita Choudhury), who steals Zaf's heart and the band's hopes of stardom with "Wild West Records". The film was written by then 29-year-old Harwant Bains, who grew up in Southall in a family of Punjabi background. It's clearly a flight of personal fancy rooted in an environment harshly observed. If the petty crime sits uncomfortably with the love story there's always the considerately compiled soundtrack to smooth away the suburb's rough edges. --Paul Tonks

Although crime-writer-turned-detective Jason King, as played by the deep-voiced Peter Wyngarde, was the star supporting character of the 1969-70 series Department S, he seemed rather diminished when given a show of his own, thus robbing him of the straight characters necessary to show off his flamboyance. Jason King also ditched the impossible mysteries of the parent series in favour of more ordinary puzzles that the Saint or any other two-fisted hero could have solved without having to spend so much on fabulous fashion gear. That said, Wyngarde is well-matched by his foils, the value-for-money hams Dennis Price and Ronald Lacey, as the government agents who forced Jason to catch villains for them by threatening to turn him in for failing to pay his back taxes on the earnings of his bestsellers. Jason King was also the only hero on television who would take any brutal beating from the bad guys and shrug it off, only to become quite agitated when they threatened to slice his suits to bits. Volume One includes: "Wanna Buy a Television Series", in which Jason pitches a series based on his books, with guest star Anna Palk; and "A Page Before Dying" wherein Jason's latest book gives away spy secrets, and he's kidnapped to East Germany. --Kim Newman

This 1991 concert film was shot in the IMAX format and was originally presented on enormous IMAX screens, with outstanding visual and audio clarity. The dimensions may have been scaled down for this DVD release, but the show is still huge in energy and talent. Filmed during a European leg of the Rolling Stones' Steel Wheels tour, this production boasts 15 songs and an extraordinary stage set with inflatable floozies (for "Honky Tonk Woman") and wild dogs (rather cleverly for "Street Fighting Man"). The Stones' set emphasises material from the late 1960s and early 70s ("Tumbling Dice", "Happy", "You Can't Always Get What You Want"), but the band's performance is so furious that the show is far from a pandering oldies act. Highlights include "Paint it Black", at once brutal and delicate, as well as a muscular "Rock and a Hard Place", a psychedelicised "2,000 Light Years from Home", and a cheeky "It's Only Rock 'n' Roll". Once kings of a gloriously sloppy sound, the Stones prove to be as effective in their artistic maturity with small, breathtaking touches as they are with chunky orchestration. Guitarists Keith Richards and Ron Wood play as if they are of one mind, Richards providing powerful leads while his partner captures some of the texture of the group's original recordings. Bassist Bill Wyman, still in the band at this phase, offers wit and an encyclopaedic grasp of rhythm & blues history, while drummer Charlie Watts adds control and swing. Mick Jagger prowls, climbs around the set, and delivers all the charismatic goods for adoring audiences, even touching the forbidden fruit again in a feverish performance of "Sympathy for the Devil". The DVD also includes a full Stones discography. --Tom Keogh, Amazon.com
