  Introduced in "A Magnum for Schneider", the hour-long 1967 Armchair Theatre episode of Callan written by James Mitchell about a disillusioned British secret agent of the same name (starring Edward Woodward), went on to offer four popular (if downbeat) series, a spin-off movie remaking the original story and a some-years-later wrap-up play "Wet Job". Remembered for its very distinctive opening titles, with a swinging broken-light bulb and a memorable theme tune, the series adopted a Deighton-LeCarré approach to the grim, treacherous, grubby business of Cold War espionage and made a TV star of the intense Woodward as the sweaty, sometimes conscience-stricken, sometimes robotic Callan. Even in the 21st century this still seems as strong, its complex stories and impressive performances outweighing a low-budget mix of video and film in the production that makes it seem less "professional" than other shows of the time. A great deal of the series opener is devoted to bringing on new regulars. Theres a fresh Mr Hunter who, like Number Two on The Prisoner--with which Callan shares series editor George Markstein--was a title not a name, so several actors held the position over the course of the show. Theres also the trendily mulleted thug Cross (Patrick Mower), who would go spectacularly off the rails in the next series and a half. In a dramatic device that has long since fallen out of fashion in television, Callan episodes tend to wind up by leaving the audience to work out all the connections of the plot while Callan himself sits gloomily and ponders the wretchedness of his squalid world. --Kim Newman

  Breakout is a 1975 jailbreak vehicle for Charles Bronson and wife Jill Ireland. It also stars Robert Duvall as Jay Wagner, framed by his wealthy but scheming grandfather (John Huston) and sentenced to 28 years in a Mexican jail. Ireland plays his concerned wife who enlists the help of small-time pilot Nick Colton (Bronson) to get Duvall out of jail in an audacious escape plot. While supporting actors such as Randy Quaid as Bronson's sidekick bring a little enthusiasm to their parts, the major players do not. Bronson and Ireland deliver their parts with the stiltedness of a first run-through, while Robert Duvall's mind seems entirely elsewhere, as if he's unable to believe he's involved in such an inauspicious project. His character seems strangely indifferent to his fate, an indifference which spreads swiftly to the audience. The escape sequence takes an eternity to arrive and when it does is almost breathtakingly underwhelming. Only the gruesomely depicted death of a bad guy, slashed to pieces by a propeller on a runaway, strikes a pleasingly jarring note. Otherwise, you almost feel sorry for this film, so manifestly unloved is it by those who conceived and participated in it. On the DVD: Breakout on disc is presented in anamorphic widescreen format. Once a job is complete Jennings routinely has his short-term memory erased so as not to divulge any sensitive company information to future clients. Highly paid for his work he expects to earn .4 billion at the end of his latest 3-year project. But upon completion of the job instead of a big paycheck Jennings is handed an envelope filled with random objects and told that he has agreed to forfeit all payment.   In the coda of Cheaters, John Stockwell's dramatisation of the 1995 Steinmetz school scandal, Jolie Fitch (Jena Malone) ruminates, "I learned more about the way the world really works from my nine months on the academic decathlon team than most people will learn in a lifetime". Fitch is the team leader of the crumbling inner-city school's first "academic decathlon" squad, a group of hard-working kids hopelessly outclassed by the perennial champions from a lavishly funded model school for the gifted and the rich. When a Steinmetz student discovers the question sheet for the upcoming finals, the issue isn't whether to cheat, but how. Stockwell discards easy moralising and empty platitudes for an ambiguous perspective framed by questions of privilege and prejudice. Jeff Daniels, so long the cinema's hapless nice guy, is excellent as the tireless teacher, a well-meaning idealist who struggles with his inner demons through the ordeal. Malone is refreshing as a streetwise class brain whose ambition drives the team on. Their guilt is the focus of a predatory media scandal, but it's the hypocrisy of the system and the double standards of the gatekeepers that Stockwell takes to task in his compelling drama.
