Set in America at the start of the 20th century soldiers are returning home while the battle of the sexes goes merrily on. Joseph Papp's 1972 CBS-TV television production of The New York Shakespeare Festival's Broadway staging of Shakespear's rollicking comedy is brassy bouncy and all-together entertaining.Featuring Sam Waterston and the Ton nominated performances of Kathleen Widdoes and Barnard Hughes Papp's turn-of-the-century version has Teddy Roosevelt's Rough Riders returning from the Spanish-American war bicycle-riding women suffragettes and police who behave like the Keystone Cops but remains faithful to the classic tale. Beatrice and Benedick are still sparring partners fighting their merry war of words; the evil Don John continues conspiring to break up the wedding of Hero and Claudio; and it's once again up to Dogberry to save the day.Critically acclaimed and enormously popular with audience Much Ado About Nothing originated at the open-air theatre in Central Park was transferred to Broadway and was perceived as the first successful Shakespeare to play without a major star in Broadway history. The CBS broadcast was seen by twenty million people.

For many, Buster Keaton is the greatest comedian of the silent era rated even above Chaplin, and College (1927) is one of his finest films. A poor student who has to work his way through college, Buster is desperate to win the attention of a pretty girl and takes up sports. His attempt at the high jump is a classic piece of clowning, and as the cox in a boat race Buster displays his full genius for comic invention. Through every disaster, the great "stone face" as he was nicknamed betrays not a flicker of emotion, enduring all humiliations with aplomb. If not quite the equal of The Navigator (1924) or its immediate predecessor The General (1927), College shows Keaton at the top of his form. Tragically, the following year he lost his independence when he signed for MGM. His career collapsed, his marriage broke up and he became an alcoholic, never to regain former glories. On the DVD: The organ music accompanying this silent feature is pleasantly unobtrusive, and apart from a short section in the middle where it deteriorates, the print quality is reasonable. In addition there are two excellent Keaton shorts, One Week (1920) and The Blacksmith (1922).-- Ed Buscombe

Spider-Man (Dir. Sam Raimi 2002): Peter Parker (Maguire) was a shy quite nerdy teenager...until he was bitten by a genetically altered spider. Now with the heightened senses and incredible strengths and abilities of a spider Parker has become the amazing Spider-Man! Hellboy (Dir. Guillermo del Toro 2004): In the final days of World War II the Nazis attempt to use black magic to aid their dying cause. The Allies raid the camp where an occult ceremony is taking place but not before a demon Hellboy has already been conjured. Joining the Allied forces Hellboy (Perlman) eventually grows to adulthood under the supervision of his adopted 'father' Trevor Bruttenholm (Hurt) serving the cause of good rather than evil. When the powerful and evil Nazi figure who unleashed Hellboy suddenly reappears in modern times he discovers that Hellboy is now working as a paranormal investigator at a secret U.S. government agency dedicated to protecting humanity from the forces of darkness. Now Hellboy must fight to prevent the destruction of mankind... Dark Horse Comic's popular cult superhero Hellboy makes the leap from the comic book pages to the big screen with Ron Perlman the only actor considered charismatic enough to carry the role of the blood-red demon cutting a cigar-chomping dash aided by the prosthetic work of 6-time Oscar winning make-up artist Rick Baker. The Hulk (Dir. Ang Lee 2003): Scientist Bruce Banner (Eric Bana) has to put it mildly anger management issues. His quiet life as a brilliant researcher working with cutting edge genetic technology conceals a nearly forgotten and painful past. His ex-girlfriend and equally brilliant fellow researcher Betty Ross (Jennifer Connelly) has tired of Bruce's cordoned off emotional terrain and resigns herself to remaining an interested onlooker to his quiet life. Which is exactly where Betty finds herself during one of the early trials in Banner's groundbreaking research. A simple oversight leads to an explosive situation and Bruce makes a split-second decision; his heroic impulse saves a life and leaves him apparently unscathed-his body absorbing a normally deadly dose of gamma radiation. Acclaimed Oscar-winning filmmaker Ang Lee turns his masterful eye to adapting the classic Marvel Comics character for the big screen. Setting out to faithfully transfer the Hulk comic book character from four-color paneled page to motion picture screen Lee combines all the elements of a blockbuster visual effects-intensive superhero movie with the brooding romance and tragedy of Universal's classic horror films. Staying true to the early subversive spirit of the Hulk as envisioned by its creators (Stan Lee and Jack Kirby) while also tuning the tale to current dangerous times Lee presents a portrait of a man at war with himself and the world both a superhero and a monster a means of wish fulfillment and a nightmare...

  • In My Country [DVD] [2005]In My Country | DVD | (18/09/2006) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £31.99

Noted filmmaker John Boorman (DELIVERANCE, THE GENERAL, THE TAILOR OF PANAMA) addresses the complex emotional scars leftover from Apartheid in South Africa in IN MY COUNTRY. The events of the film take place during hearings conducted in 1996 by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. The purpose of the hearings was to shed light on the atrocities committed during the time of persecution. Anna Malan is a native Afrikaner poet whose is covering the hearings for state radio. During the proceedings, she meets Langston Whitfield an American covering the matter for the Washington Post. Initially, the two don't get along. He thinks she shares collective guilt for cruelty that was carried out; she thinks he's a stubborn and ignorant American. Getting past those unfounded first impressions, the two fall in love. Adapted from author Antjie Krog's memoirs COUNTRY OF MY SKULL, the film features strong performances from both leads and by Brendan Gleeson in a supporting role as Colonel De Jager. IN MY COUNTRY asks an intriguing question about who should take the blame for what happened; the leaders, the soldiers, or the people who watched it happen and never protested.
