A Caribbean Dream is a re-imagining of William Shakespeare's romantic comedy, A Midsummer Night's Dream. Set in modern day Barbados, Theseus and Hippolyta are returning Nationals. This traditional tale takes a twist with the creation of new characters where Mechanicals are re-imagined as Fishermen, and Bottom as a Black Belly Sheep, along with Birdman and a Changeling Boy. Chaos and madness unfolds at night, exploring Caribbean folklore and culture. This is a unique and entertaining re-imagination of one of Shakespeare's most beloved comedies.
Its easy to forget that before fronting the British war effort through most of World War II, Winston Churchill had spent the previous decade isolated in Parliament and in internal opposition to the Conservative party. Winston Churchill: The Wilderness Years dramatises this period in which the growing menace of Nazism in Germany was met with indifference, even fear by governments of the day who were more concerned with their survival than in serving those who had elected them. Churchill is perceptively played by Robert Hardy, confirming the image without falling into caricature. Visionary and obstinate by turns, he galvanises his supporters and enrages his enemies with a passion borne of conviction. A seasoned British cast includes Peter Barkworth as the amiable but ineffectual Stanley Baldwin, Eric Porter as the truly "out of time" Neville Chamberlain, Edward Woodward as the scheming Samuel Hoare and Nigel Havers as the tragically flawed Randolph Churchill. Martin Gilbert has done a persuasive job transforming his novel into a TV script, the scenes in the House of Commons having a gritty reality that makes compulsive viewing. On the DVD: its a pity that the Southern Pictures production, first screened in 1981, has emerged so dimly in this incarnation. Has the master tape eroded so badly, or was it simply not available? However, its worth putting up with the technical defects to enjoy this historically informed and grippingly dramatic serial. --Richard Whitehouse

The Great Waltz the popular musical based on the life of Johann Strauss Jr. was one of a number of Spectaculars presented by pioneer TV producer Max Liebman in the mid 1950s. A stellar cast was assembled: Patrice Munsel was then a star of the Metropolitan Opera having sung more than a dozen roles with the company before the age of 27! Jarmila Novotna the great Czech soprano made her Metropolitan Opera debut in 1940 and sang with the company for sixteen seasons. Both Munsel and Novotna were acclaimed for their performances in the immensely successful Met production of Johann Strauss's Die Fledermaus which showcased their talents as comic actresses as well as singers. The role of Hans Eberstater is played by Bert Lahr the popular star of stage and screen who is best remembered for his film role as the Cowardly Lion in The Wizard of Oz. Keith Andes is best known for his roles in such feature films as The Farmer's Daughter Clash by Night and Tora! Tora! Tora!In an age when the medium was still defining itself Max Liebman produced a wide range of high quality television programming. His early efforts yielded television's first variety show The Admiral Broadway Revue which later evolved into the legendary series Your Show of Shows. He later produced a series of specials which aired under the blanket title Max Liebman Presents. We offer The Great Waltz as a tribute to one of the visionaries of the formative years of television.

On remote Isla Nuba entrepreneur John Hammond (Richard Attenborough) has built the ultimate theme-park, populated by genetically engineered dinosaurs painstakingly reconstructed from DNA extracted from prehistoric amber... and, of course, frogs! Adapted from Michael Crichton's novel, Steven Spielberg's classic blockbuster became a cultural and commercial phenomenon thanks in part to the enduring appeal of all things prehistoric. But the film's extraordinarily realistic digital dinosaurs also showcased the spectacular computer-generated effects which have since become ubiquitous in Hollywood filmmaking. Indeed, in the years since 1993 it is debatable whether any film has revolutionised special effects to such an extent, and this DVD release offers the perfect opportunity to relive its visual and aural splendour (the film was also the first to be released with a DTS soundtrack). Given the rather insipid team of experts (including Sam Neill, Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum) sent to approve Hammond's site, there is no doubt that the dinosaurs are the real stars of Spielberg's film. From the benign majesty of the towering brachiosaurus to the reptilian menace of the velociraptors, the inhabitants of Jurassic Park were a radical departure from their stop-motion predecessors, and remain compellingly real in their animalistic pursuit of survival at all costs. Most memorable of all is the T-rex, displaying a spine-chilling combination of physical ferocity and child-like bewilderment in the face of its reincarnation in the modern world. It was no surprise that in The Lost World sequel the T-rex once again took centre stage, but this first appearance still retains a unique power and a seminal place in film history. --Steve Napleton
