Filmed in Vancouver Canada in 1982 this DVD captures Jefferson Starship at the height of their powers on a set comprising of hits from both Jefferson Starship and Jefferson Airplane and with tracks linked by Shortwave Mike your friendly alien presenter. Founded by Paul Kantner from the ashes of Jefferson Airplane Jefferson Starship went on to scale even greater commercial heights than its illustrious predecessor. Later the departure of Airplane vocalist Grace Slick and founder Paul Kantner would lead to the creation of the more soft rock orientated Starship but here in 1982 Jefferson Starship are at their creative peak. Bombast was always a part of Jefferson Starship. The group's chunky, muscular riffing through the 1970s and 80s made them a rock powerhouse in a way that their earlier incarnation, the Jefferson Airplane, was never meant to be. But in the few years that Marty Balin joined two of his mates from the Airplane, Paul Kantner and Grace Slick, for its retooled edition, bombast was mitigated by a ripened sensuality and other pleasures. Between Balin's splendid love songs, Slick's sassy attitude, Kantner's lyrical castles in the sky and guitarist Craig Chaquico's prankish versatility, the Starship was a fun, sexy, uplifting outfit. By 1983, however, with Balin long gone, Kantner on the way out and shrill vocalist Mickey Thomas in the mix, the Starship looked and sounded like an anachronism. Sadly, that's what we have here on The Definitive Concert. Thomas seems to be screeching at a single frequency on "Winds of Change" and "Out of Control", while Slick spends much of the time delivering a wide-eyed stare into the camera that seemed trippy enough in 1967, but here looks insistent and vain. On the plus side, Slick's chilling power on "White Rabbit" is something to behold, and Kantner leads the band in a rousing, snaky rendition of "Ride the Tiger". But, for the most part, this "definitive concert" is a woeful reminder of better days.--Tom Keogh, Amazon.com
Jefferson Starship evolved from the sixties and early seventies band Jefferson Airplane and the initial line up of Jefferson Starship included former Airplane members Paul Kantner Grace Slick John Barbata David Frieberg and Marty Balin. The band went on through the seventies and into the eighties to have massive mainstream success both with albums and also live performances. Over the years however many members have come and gone leaving only Paul Kantner remaining from the initial line up and even he left the band for a short period during the eighties. Live At The Soiled Dove was filmed in 2003 and features the line up of Paul Kantner alongside guitarist Slick Aguilar vocalist Diana Mngano and keyboardist and bassist Chris Smith. This club performance is a stripped down affair however the performance loses none of its potency.
