In the near future, society is split into two strata: The ˜lowdrives' make up the zombielike majority, mentally anaesthetized by an incessant diet of television, largely consisting of pornography. Television, and by extension the masses, is controlled by the ˜highdrives', an educated class who remain servile through their perpetual quest for better ratings and audience subjugation. When the lowdrives start to become increasingly uninterested in the programming on offer, coordinator Ugo Priest (Leonard Rossiter) ends up accidentally happening upon a new entertainment concept ..reality television. First broadcast in 1968 The Year of the Sex Olympics is one of the most original pieces of television drama ever written and would foreshadow the likes of Big Brother and the phenomenon that is Love Island. • Down From The Mountain [2001]Down From The Mountain | DVD | (05/11/2001) from £14.54   |  Saving you £5.45 (37.48%)   |  RRP £19.99

Down from the Mountain is a treasurable record of a unique event: a live concert from Nashville featuring the artists and songs from the Coen Brothers' film O Brother, Where Art Thou?. Anyone who was delighted by that enchanting film and its traditional Americana soundtrack will find this concert an irresistible delight. It's not just a rehashing of the songs from the film, however, but an opportunity for some of the finest names in Bluegrass to perform a variety of traditional songs. Here we have Alison Krauss, Gillian Welch and Emmylou Harris playing separately before coming together for an a cappella rendition of "(Didn't Leave) Nobody but the Baby". Bluegrass legend Ralph Stanley chills the spine with his lonesome "O Death", while bluesman Chris Thomas King wails "John Law Burned Down the Liquor Sto'". There are other marvellous performances from old-timey stalwarts The Cox Family and The Whites, more Gospel-infused singing from the Fairfield Four, and impressively authentic fiddling from John Hartford. Oddly, the only song not to be heard is the original film's standout item, "Man of Constant Sorrow". The concert is also available on CD. On the DVD: The disc's packaging is misleading, as it only lists 12 songs when there are several more in the concert, all of which are listed and can be accessed from the menu. There's a good 25-minute backstage documentary also included, plus some liner notes from the Coens. --Mark Walker

The contemporary vogue for detoxing has its origins in practices thousands of years old, which more authentically include daily enemas. Fortunately Suzanne Cox (aka Gladiator Vogue) shows us a less intimidating way to give our bodies a service with her simple at-home two-day Detox Plan. With a carrot, rather than a stick, Cox gently but firmly leads you through detox preparation (hide all the caffeine, dairy, sugar, processed foods, cigarettes and alcohol) and into the detox itself. She takes her time to show you how to prepare the food and drinks you'll be consuming, as well as how to kick-start the lymphatic system with gentle stretches, followed by a warm bath/cold shower combination. If the domestic setting, slow pace and occasionally amateurish camera work make this feel more like a home video than a glossy high-production-value number, then at least you'll feel like detoxing is something you can realistically achieve at home. Cox also punctuates her soothing Delia Smith-like presentation with guest appearances from a nutritionist, naturopath, herbalist and yoga specialist to enrich the programme with advice, exercises and tips. One major omission does sully this new-you scenario. Rather than showing you how to ease your way out of the detox, the video ends at the completion of the second day. To the inexperienced, this might indicate that it's fine to crack open the booze and fry a T-bone on the third day. Despite how much care has been taken up to that point, the video ends up feeling hastily curtailed. On the whole, however, this is a very accessible, user-friendly, show-and-tell plan for those who want to relieve themselves of their toxic baggage. --Fiona Buckland
