Amazingly athletic not to mention charismatic Tony Jaa refuses to countenance the use of props (yes that's real glass barbed wire and metal spikes!) wire enhancement and faked blows. What full contact you see is most definitely what you get! Added to this is a gleefully choreographed chase on the highways of Bangkok involving a fleet of tuk-tuk vehicles (the three-wheeled taxi iconic to Thailand) knowing location photography (visitors to the capital will recognise Khao San Road and the exterior of top nightclub hangout Suzy's Pub) and most of all an affecting story of one man's struggle to uphold village traditions against Western modernisation. Warrior King (2005): The Ong-Bak team take martial arts on film to a whole new level! Two years in the making the second most expensive film in Thai history and with several seriously battered and bruised stuntmen into the bargain Warrior King once again is the perfect showcase for the talents of Tony Jaa. The life of young martial arts master Kham (Tony Jaa) is turned upside down when an international mafia syndicate based in Australia capture his two prize elephants and smuggle them to Sydney. Distraught that the animals reared as a symbol of his devotion to the King of Thailand and due to be presented to the monarch Kham is prompted to venture into a foreign land for the very first time. Rescuing the animals is no mean feat. Despite the assistance of Sergeant Mark (Petchtai Wongkamlao) a Thai police officer based in Australia and Pla (Bongkoj Khongmalai) a Thai girl sold into modern day slavery Kham faces an incredible challenge. The ruthless gang is headed by Madame Rose (Xing Jing) whose deadly henchmen include a Vietnamese thief (Johnny Nguyen) and the hulking 7' tall behemoth TK (Nathan Jones)... If you think you know what to expect from the Ong-Bak triumvirate of director Prachya Pinkaew star Tony Jaa and stunt co-ordinator Panna Rittikrai then think again! Plot necessarily takes a back-seat to this delirious example of extreme Muay Thai cinema the highlight of which must include a 4 minute(!) unbroken fight sequence in which Kham battles his way through the four floors of the Tom Yum Goong restaurant. No cuts no faked blows no letup in the action!

  Yesyears is a generous (over two-hour) documentary that profiles Yes through the years, from the band's earliest days up to and including 1991, the year when no fewer than eight past and current members played together on their "Union" tour. The story is told through separate interviews with the band circa 1991, talking happily about their many successes and even greater excesses; their musical freedoms and their personal fallings-out. The talking heads are interspersed with a lot of fascinating archive footage from all phases of the band's evolution--just some random examples: a youthful Steve Howe playing "The Clap"; "Yours is No Disgrace" from a live German TV appearance in 1971; Chris Squire performing "Hold Out Your Hand" from his first solo album; studio footage from the Going for the One and Tormato sessions; and lots of evocative footage from the Spinal Tap-esque live shows of the 70s. Inevitably, it being an officially endorsed document, there's little negative criticism here, though Rick Wakeman is typically candid about his decisions for originally leaving the band. Documentation of all the various musical excerpts would have been nice--they come and go without any context--but generally this makes rewarding viewing for any Yes fan, with the caveat of course that the story stops in 1991. On the DVD: Yesyears is disappointingly presented in 4:3 ratio NTSC format, leaving the picture generally fuzzy and at times positively obscure in places, with plain stereo sound (at best--many of the early musical excerpts are mono). The chapter divisions are extremely generous, but there are no bonus features as such. --Mark Walker

  Set among the Italian-American community of Manhattan and adapted by Vincent Patrick from his own novel, 1984's The Pope of Greenwich Village just about gets by on its charm. It stars Mickey Rourke as Charlie, a small-time grafter who is on the point of making his big move and breakaway. Unfortunately, the pull of family ties means that he's hampered by his cousin Paulie (Eric Roberts), an ambitious and excitable idiot who manages to cock up absolutely everything he turns his hand to, bringing down Charlie with him every time. After he gets the pair of them sacked from a restaurant, Paulie helps set up a safecracking deal with older hand Kenneth MacMillan. Trouble is, they’re robbing the local mafia boss. Rourke and Roberts' relationship is modelled closely on that of Harvey Keitel and Robert DeNiro in Scorcese's Mean Streets, only without quite the same harrowing consequences. This being the 1980s there's much De Niro-esque methodology, which generally consists of repeating lines at least twice ("Fix your tie! Fix your tie!"). The element of improv sees the film veer off course occasionally, while Darryl Hannah is her usual oddly semi-detached self in the role of Rourke's girlfriend. However, it's Roberts' performance as the exasperating and energetic Paulie which carries the film, with solid support from numerous Goodfellas and Sopranos regulars. On the DVD: The Pope of Greenwich Village arrives on disc in a decent enough but hardly pristine print. The sole extra is the original trailer, which means the only real benefit of acquiring this on DVD is storage convenience. --David Stubbs
