Unleashed: Serve no master. Written and produced by Luc Besson and directed by Louis Leterrier Unleashed features a fantastic performance from martial arts superstar Jet Li. On and beneath the mean streets of Glasgow fiery gangster Bart (Hoskins) is merciless with debtors would-be rivals and anyone else he takes a passing dislike to. Bart maintains his stranglehold through his unwitting enforcer Danny (Jet Li) who he has 'raised' since boyhood. Danny has been kept as a near-prisoner: trained to attack and if necessary kill. Danny knows little of life except the brutal existence that Bart has so cruelly fashioned for him. However when Danny has a chance encounter with the sightless piano tuner Sam (Morgan Freeman) he senses true kindness and compassion for the first time and experiences the transforming power of music. When a sudden gangland coup separates Danny from Bart and the gang Danny escapes the underworld. Taking refuge with Sam and his stepdaughter Victoria (Kerry Condon) Danny finds a family of sorts and a future... However the mob will not give up their prize asset so easily and Danny must soon call upon his skills once more to protect his family and bury his past. (Dir. Louis Leterrier 2005) Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon: Amazing martial arts fighting sequences (choreographed by Yuen wo Ping - The Matrix) stunning special effects action adventure and romance have made Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon the most talked about movie of the year. Martial arts masters Li Mu Bai (Chow Yun-Fat) and Shu Lien (Michelle Yeoh) battle against evil forces to recover their stolen sword the legendary Green Destiny. (Dir. Ang Lee 2000) Kung Fu Hustle: From walking disaster to Kung Fu master: it's a new comedy unlike anything you have seen before! In the 1940's Chinese province of Guangdong petty thief Sing (Stephen Chow) aspires to become a member of the notorious Axe gang the fiercest cruel and most widespread crime syndicate in the city. However Sing is just a street rascal (trying to ignore the fact that his heart is actually in the right place) and so he ventures into the run-down Pig Sty Alley to prove his worth. However in attempting to extort money from the hairdresser Sing unwittingly exposes the plump landlady her hen-pecked husband the camp tailor and rugged coolie as martial arts masters in hiding. Coming to the attention of the Axe gang who want to clear out the apartments Sing's actions have set off a relentless chain of events that brings the clans together in an explosive battle! Stephen Chow continues his unique comedy style that first came to the attention of the West in Shaolin Soccer mixing slapstick in the finest tradition of Buster Keaton; to marvellous martial arts choreographed by none other than Yuen Woo-ping (The Matrix Kill Bill); to dance sequences with tuxedoed gangsters; to moments of genuine pathos concerning Sing's mysterious history involving a beautiful mute lollipop vendor... • The People Vs Larry Flynt [1997]The People Vs Larry Flynt | DVD | (01/10/1999) from £3.92   |  Saving you £9.07 (231.38%)   |  RRP £12.99

Leave it to Czech director Milos Forman (One Flew Over to Cuckoo's Nest) to make the most entertaining and offbeat celebration of the American Constitution ever filmed. You think the First Amendment was designed to protect Americans from offensive speech? Think again. The real glory of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights--as brought to life in this splendidly quirky and alternately reverent and irreverent comedy--is that it ensures everyone's freedom by protecting a whole range of expression, from the banal to the outrageous. Scripted by the writers of Ed Wood (another affectionately twisted biography of a disreputably eccentric entertainment figure), The People vs. Larry Flynt applies a similar sort of exaggerated and telescoped editorial-cartoon sensibility to the wild life and times of Hustler skin-magazine publisher Larry Flynt. It's the great (and fictionalised-but-true) American story of how smut-peddler Flynt--the poor man's redneck Hugh Hefner--ended up appealing a libel case (brought by televangelist Jerry Falwell) to the Supreme Court and winning a major legal victory that affects all Americans. Terrific performances by Woody Harrelson as Flynt, grunge-star-turned-glamour-puss Courtney Love as his wife Althea, and Edward Norton as their lawyer (a composite character). --Jim Emerson

Feverish worlds such as espionage and warfare have nothing on the hothouse realm of ballet, as director Darren Aronofsky makes clear in Black Swan, his over-the-top delve into a particularly fraught production of Swan Lake. At the very moment hard-working ballerina Nina (Natalie Portman) lands the plum role of the White Swan, her company director (Vincent Cassel) informs her that she'll also play the Black Swan--and while Nina's precise, almost virginal technique will serve her well in the former role, the latter will require a looser, lustier attack. The strain of reaching within herself for these feelings, along with nattering comments from her mother (Barbara Hershey) and the perceived rivalry from a new dancer (Mila Kunis), are enough to make anybody crack… and tracing out the fault lines of Nina's breakdown is right in Aronofsky's wheelhouse. Those cracks are broad indeed, as Nina's psychological instability is telegraphed with blunt-force emphasis in this neurotic roller-coaster ride. The characters are stick figures--literally, in the case of the dancers, but also as single-note stereotypes in the horror show: witchy bad mummy, sexually intimidating male boss, wacko diva (Winona Ryder, as the prima ballerina Nina is replacing). Yet the film does work up some crazed momentum (and undeniably earned its share of critical raves), and the final sequence is one juicy curtain-dropper. A good part of the reason for this is the superbly all-or-nothing performance by Natalie Portman, who packs an enormous amount of ferocity into her small body. Kudos, too, to Tchaikovsky's incredibly durable music, which has meshed well with psychological horror at least since being excerpted for the memorably moody opening credits of the 1931 Dracula, another pirouette through the dark side. --Robert Horton

Paul Schrader's Forever Mine tells a not-very-compelling, still-less-credible story of love, betrayal and retribution. A cabana boy (Joseph Fiennes) at a Florida beach resort falls hard for a gorgeous guest (Gretchen Mol) neglected by her wheeler-dealer husband (Ray Liotta). After a steamy nude scene and a sweet, barefoot date, Fiennes follows her home to New York and declares undying love. Mol--a good Catholic girl who reads Madame Bovary--confesses the affair to Liotta. Being shadier than she realises, he arranges to have nasty things befall his rival. Cut to 14 years later (though in fact the movie has been shuffling time periods since the beginning) Fiennes, long presumed dead, resurfaces to lend his talents (he's become a master criminal) to the now thoroughly corrupt Liotta and sees what his beloved is up to. Fiennes has a new name and a scar on one side of his face, so neither recognises him. You don't have a problem with that, do you? Non-recognition is always a tricky proposition in movies, but Forever Mine's problems don't end there. Fiennes, sans Shakespeare in Love beard and Bardlike charisma, doesn't begin to suggest a guy who'd inspire obsession. His costar's attempt at creating a soul sister to Emma Bovary is as under-acted as it is underwritten, and Liotta's husband is just a lout, despite a desperate stab at giving him a virtually literary sensitivity regarding his romantic one-upping. If you want a spellbinding Schrader movie about outré passion and literary mystery, look up The Comfort of Strangers instead. --Richard T Jameson

Jean-Claude Brisseau (Secret Things, The Exterminating Angels, A L'Aventure) is an auteur often associated with films that are sexually provocative, risqué and controversial. Winner of the Special Youth Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival, THE SOUND AND THE FURY presents a brutal, shocking and poignant look at the lives of children living in the Paris projects. Bruno, a 14 year old boy, has just moved into a high-rise with his hard-working mother. Barely earning enough to support them takes all of her time, leaving Bruno alone to fend for himself. After he is befriended at school by the streetwise, battered and deeply troubled Jean-Roger, Bruno is soon out thieving, destroying property and harming people with a vengeance, before long catching the attention of the police THE SOUND AND THE FURY (DE BRUIT ET DE FUREUR) is a trailblazing and visionary portrait of contemporary social malaise, a precursor to films such as City of God and La Haine, featuring extraordinary performances from the young leads. With startling realism Brisseau denounces the dangers of a boxed-in society and questions the responsibilities of those charged with the care and education of children.

After director Alex Cox alienated the powers that be in Hollywood with Straight to Hell and Walker his anarchic follow-ups to Repo Man and Sid and Nancy it would be nearly a decade before he made a film in the United States again. After making the critically acclaimed underseen Highway Patrolman in Mexico he agreed to direct The Winner based on the play A Darker Purpose by Wendy Riss. Vincent D'Onofrio stars as Philip a soft-spoken rather dimwitted young man who stumbles into an incredible lucky streak in Las Vegas. Every Sunday he enters the same casino wins some money and goes home. While Philip himself is pretty nonchalant about his lucky streak it earns him the attention of a lot of unsavory characters. Louise (Rebecca De Mornay who also executive produced the film) a tacky nightclub singer and her impotent hitman boyfriend Jack (Billy Bob Thornton) plan to get Philip to fall in love with Louise and offer her a fortune to pay off her debt to the sinister seemingly omnipotent Kingman (Delroy Lindo) the casino owner who employs Jack. A small-time hood Joey (Frank Whaley) and his motley crew (Richard Edson and Saverio Guerra) plan to rip Philip off but their plans are complicated when the antic impulsively violent Joey begins to feel a strange attraction to his would-be prey. Wolf (Michael Madsen) Philip's thuggish brother (and Louise's former lover) arrives in town practically guaranteeing some kind of violent showdown. After shooting the film Cox returned to Mexico to work on his next project. While he was away the producers then re-edited The Winner without his consent and replaced the film's soundtrack. Cox has since distanced himself from the final product.
