After director Alex Cox alienated the powers that be in Hollywood with Straight to Hell and Walker his anarchic follow-ups to Repo Man and Sid and Nancy it would be nearly a decade before he made a film in the United States again. After making the critically acclaimed underseen Highway Patrolman in Mexico he agreed to direct The Winner based on the play A Darker Purpose by Wendy Riss. Vincent D'Onofrio stars as Philip a soft-spoken rather dimwitted young man who stumbles into an incredible lucky streak in Las Vegas. Every Sunday he enters the same casino wins some money and goes home. While Philip himself is pretty nonchalant about his lucky streak it earns him the attention of a lot of unsavory characters. Louise (Rebecca De Mornay who also executive produced the film) a tacky nightclub singer and her impotent hitman boyfriend Jack (Billy Bob Thornton) plan to get Philip to fall in love with Louise and offer her a fortune to pay off her debt to the sinister seemingly omnipotent Kingman (Delroy Lindo) the casino owner who employs Jack. A small-time hood Joey (Frank Whaley) and his motley crew (Richard Edson and Saverio Guerra) plan to rip Philip off but their plans are complicated when the antic impulsively violent Joey begins to feel a strange attraction to his would-be prey. Wolf (Michael Madsen) Philip's thuggish brother (and Louise's former lover) arrives in town practically guaranteeing some kind of violent showdown. After shooting the film Cox returned to Mexico to work on his next project. While he was away the producers then re-edited The Winner without his consent and replaced the film's soundtrack. Cox has since distanced himself from the final product.

  • Midnight Crossing [1988]Midnight Crossing | DVD | (14/06/2004) from £11.91   |  Saving you £-5.92 (N/A%)   |  RRP £5.99

With a pounding, synthesised sound track, big-haired babes in bikinis and succession of increasingly incredible fight scenes and returns from the dead, Midnight Crossing takes some beating as an eminently watchable slab of 1980s schlock. Honesty is a premium in this torrid tale of a buried fortune, hot sex, deceit on the high seas and much extended suspense. Jeff Shub (John Laughlin), a six-packed hunk in tight shorts, lives for his yacht, inherited from his father. When his wife's boss Morley (married to a blind woman and played by Daniel J Travanti) charters the yacht for a birthday celebration, the two couples head off for the Bahamas. Then, Morley reveals his real agenda--the recovery of treasure he buried on a Cuban island in the pre-Castro years--and it soon becomes clear that nothing and nobody are what they seem. Kim Cattrall, years before her emergence as a stylish television star in Sex and the City, pops up in a in a wet t-shirt. And at the film's centre is a knockout, beyond self-parody performance from Faye Dunaway. Here she plays Joan Crawford playing a blind woman who might not, in fact, be blind at all. Dunaway confirms the suspicion that she was an actress born 30 years too late for the kind of scripts that would have best served her unique brand of throbbing melodrama. The rest of the cast, particularly the usually reliable Travanti, soon follow her over the top. The result is a compulsive 90 minutes of hammy and thoroughly enjoyable action. On the DVD: Presented in letterbox widescreen (1.85:1) format for maximum effect Midnight Crossing surfaces pretty much as it did in the cinema. Picture quality is fine. The daylight scenes on board the yacht certainly benefit but the interminable night-time struggles are less convincing. Were they shot in a tank? Probably, if the dull stereo sound quality at this point is anything to go by. Extras are limited to the original cinema trailer and filmographies of the leading players.--Piers Ford

Stargate SG-1 is the TV spin-off from the 1994 big-screen movie. In the roles of Colonel Jack O'Neill and Dr Daniel Jackson respectively are Richard Dean Anderson and Michael Shanks. They're joined by Captain Samantha Carter (Amanda Tapping) and guilt-stricken former alien baddie Teal'c (Christopher Judge) to form the primary unit SG-1. With a seemingly endless network of Stargates found to exist on planets all across the known universe, their mission is to make first contact with as many friendly races as possible. Episodes on this DVD:"Red Sky". A picturesque location shoot and a questioning of faiths distinguishes this episode. After an unavoidable accident initiates a global catastrophe on planet K'Tau, Sam forces Jack and the others to decide between technology or primitive faith. Naturally, Daniel is for the latter, and ultimately the show stands tall by leaving its resolution up to the interpretation of the viewer. "The Rite of Passage". Some Stargate guest stars just don't get a break. Cassandra, the poor little girl turned into a human bomb four years ago ("Singularity") is now a teenager experiencing a far more problematic "Rite of Passage" than she deserves. Infected with a secretly dormant retro-virus, she also seems to be seeing a ghostly form no one else can see. And for once, there's an opportunity for Dr Fraiser to do more than jab needles too! "Beast of Burden". An interesting mix of the movie Enemy Mine and the Biblical tale of Daniel and the Lion. Here it's Daniel Jackson who had previously befriended the Unas "Beast" Chaka (Dion Johnstone) in "The First Ones". There's an agreeable political stance taken on slave labour and animal captivity too, aided enormously by the star calibre cameo of Larry Drake."The Tomb". Paired up with their on/off adversaries the Russians(!), SG-1 enjoys a spot of Indiana Jonesing around "The Tomb". Throw in a little Alien-style hunt and seek with an unseen predator, and you have a terrific movie mish-mash in which Jack manages an all-time high in sarcastic barbs. --Paul Tonks
