| RRP White Noise: People have always searched for a way to communicate with the other side - fascinated motivated driven to find a way to connect with loved ones who have passed on. Electronic Voice Phenomenon (EVP) is the process through which the dead communicate with the living through household recording devices. These extraordinary recordings - captured by people all over the world in their homes with a simple tape or video recorder - seem to confirm what many of us have dared to believe: it is possible for the dead to communicate with us. And all we have to do is listen. Now comes the suspense thriller that explores this very-real other-worldly communication: 'White Noise'. Tapping into our deepest fears and most profound longings 'White Noise' forces us to re-examine the world in which we live and in the process question our most basic notions about life and death. Michael Keaton plays successful architect Jonathan Rivers whose peaceful existence is shattered by the unexplained disappearance and death of his wife Anna (Chandra West). Jonathan is eventually contacted by a man (Ian McNeice) who claims to be receiving messages from Anna through EVP. At first skeptical Jonathan then becomes convinced of the messages' validity and is soon obsessed with trying to contact her on his own. His further explorations into EVP and the accompanying supernatural messages unwittingly open a door to another world allowing something uninvited into his life. 'White Noise' is directed by veteran television helmer Geoffrey Sax written by Niall Johnson (The Big Swap) and produced by Paul Brooks (executive producer of 'My Big Fat Greek Wedding') and Shawn Williamson (House of the Dead). Frequency: What if you had the chance to travel back in time and change just one event in your life? What would it be? All his life police officer John Sullivan (Jim Caviezel) has been haunted by one tragic event. When a once-in-a-lifetime phenomenon of nature opens a mysterious channel to the past John is stunned to discover that he is able to communicate with his dad Frank (Dennis Quaid)who's been dead for 30 years. But by changing the past they set in motion a string of brutal unsolved murders with John's mother - and Frank's wife - next victim. | RRP Set in the ancient English city of York, Eternal Law is about angels living amongst us, helping and guiding humans when they are at their most desperate. The series starts with one grumpy, seen-it-all-a-million times angel called Zak arriving to start a fresh tour of duty with his new colleague, the constantly amazed neophyte, Tom, who has never before spent time with humans. They live in a ramshackle house stuffed with books and paintings, where they are looked after by the beautiful, mysterious Mrs Sheringham. We discover that in his previous tour of duty Zak did a terrible, completely forbidden thing - he fell in love with a human woman, Hannah. To his horror he realises that Hannah has been put in York to tempt him, to test him. Although he loves her with every fibre of his body he knows he can never be with her. It is a cruel, bruised, aching romance. There are angels in all walks of life but our angels are lawyers. Which means that - every episode - they have to deal with humans at their lowest and most exposed. It could be a man standing trial for murder; a bitter custody battle; a fight to save an Old People's home; a frightened young squaddie accused of cowardice. Our angels strive their best to fight for their clients, to win their cases, to put them back on the straight and narrow. They don't always win but they always fight to the last.Eternal Law is emotional, funny, fresh. Each episode ends with Zak and Tom high up on York Minster, wings out, sharing a bottle of wine and talking about this week's case. They find human beings complicated, contradictory, vain, baffling, greedy, passionate, illogical... and utterly, compellingly wonderful.
The War | DVD | (14/04/2003)
from £N/A

| RRP Kevin Costner is the big name in The War, but the film belongs squarely to Elijah Wood, who plays his son. The film deals with the children of a Vietnam veteran in 1970 Mississippi; as their dad (Costner) tries to cope with post-traumatic stress disorder after serving in the war, the kids build a mammoth tree house in the woods--then must defend it against the local white-trash bullies. The film includes a particularly harrowing contest involving a swim across the reservoir of a decrepit water tower; still, director Jon Avnet can't avoid a certain "can't we all just get along" didactic message. That doesn't put a damper on the youthfully natural quality of the child actors, and Costner is actually quite winning as a sensitive, troubled soul. --Marshall Fine, Amazon.com

| RRP Waltraud Meier is the stuff of which great Isoldes are made--a passionate actress who sings her heart out at every point and yet somehow keeps something in reserve from the narration and curse of the first act for the love duet of the second and the "Liebestod" of the third. Her Tristan, Jon Fredric West, is more or less her equal--he is particularly impressive in the mad death agony of the third act; his Tristan is an ordinary hero who becomes something larger. Among the other principals, Kurt Moll's Mark stands out in its eloquent heart-break, not so much a cuckold as a man who wants everything to work out right; Weikl's Kurwenal and Lipovsek's Brangane are, credibly, ordinary people caught up in great tragedy. Mehta's account of the score is solid and professional--he gets nothing wrong and everything right in a performance which survives occasionally perversely innovative staging to touch greatness. On the DVD: The DVD includes subtitles in French, German, English and Dutch. --Roz Kaveney

| RRP Mae West's reputation for tweaking the noses of film censors was well-established by the time she made I'm No Angel generally considered her most successful picture. The frank-speaking blonde bombshell delivered some of her most classic double entendres in this 1933 film her second consecutive outing opposite the luminous Cary Grant. The two had made She Done Him Wrong earlier that year and in I'm No Angel West does Grant wrong again to hilarious effect. West plays her typical floozy a carnival dancer who escapes a murder charge and cozies her way into high society where she famously tells her maid: ""Beulah peel me a grape."" Eventually she wins Grant then drops him and sues him for breach of contract. Rarely has a more intelligent sexually powerful and dominant female figure been seen on screen and West is at her sizzling comic peak. Already a major entertainment figure West rode the popularity of I'm No Angel to greater notoriety but she never again teamed up with a male superstar so successfully. West's movies were among those most responsible for bringing a new era of censorship after the early 1930s.
