Nicholas And Alexandra | DVD | (02/12/2002)

| RRP Perhaps the quintessential example of the intimate epic, Nicholas and Alexandra is the compelling story of Nicholas II (Michael Jayston), the last Czar of Russia, and his wife Alexandra (Janet Suzman). Director Franklin J Schaffner frames the intimate lives of the Imperial Couple against the dramatic backdrop of the Russian Revolution, creating the filmic equivalent of a monumental frieze. Private and public lives intersect when Alexandra, who has clearly read Macbeth, influences Nicholas into several misguided actions while coping with her haemophilic newborn son. Schaffner builds suspense wonderfully as he illuminates the couple's mysterious bond to the mystical Rasputin (Tom Baker) and the events leading to their execution. Nominated for Best Picture, the splendidly lensed Nicholas and Alexandra earned two Oscars for its delicious eye candy (Art Direction, Costume Design). --Kevin Mulhall

Family Guy, Series 1 | DVD | (29/03/2004)
from £6.13
| Saving you £18.86 (307.67%)
| RRP Family Guy shouldn't work at all. Even by the witless standards of modern television, it is breathtakingly derivative: does an animated series about the travails of a boorish, suburban yob with a saintly wife, a hopeless son, a clever daughter and a baby sound familiar at all? Even the house in Family Guy looks like it was built by the same architects who sketched the residence of The Simpsons. However, Family Guy does work, transcending its (occasionally annoyingly) obvious influences with reliably crisp writing and the glorious sight gags contained in the surreal flashbacks which punctuate the episodes. Most importantly, the show's brilliance comes from two absolutely superb characters: Stewie, the baby whose extravagant dreams of tyrannising the world are perpetually thwarted by the prosaic limitations of infanthood, and the urbane family dog Brian--Snoopy after attendance at an obedience class run by Frank Sinatra. Family Guy does not possess the cultural or satirical depth of The Simpsons--very little art in any field does. But it is a genuinely funny and clever programme. --Andrew Mueller

Vampyr | DVD | (25/08/2008)
from £N/A

| RRP The first sound-film by one of the greatest of all filmmakers Vampyr offers a sensual immediacy that few if any works of cinema can claim to match. Legendary director Carl Theodor Dreyer leads the viewer as though guided in a trance through a realm akin to a wakingdream a zone positioned somewhere between reality and the supernatural. Traveller Allan Gray (arrestingly depicted by Julian West aka the secretive real-life Baron Nicolas de Gunzburg) arrives at a countryside inn seemingly beckoned by haunted forces. His growing acquaintance with the family who reside there soon opens up a network of uncanny associations between the dead and the living of ghostly lore and demonology which pull Gray ever deeper into an unsettling and upsetting mystery. At its core: troubled Gisle chaste daughter and sexual incarnation portrayed by the great cursed Sybille Schmitz (Diary of a Lost Girl and inspiration for Fassbinder's Veronika Voss.) Before the candles of Vampyr exhaust themselves Allan Gray and the viewer alike come eye-to-eye with Fate - in the face of dear dying Sybille in the blasphemed bodies of horrific bat-men in the charged and mortal act of asphyxiation - eye-to-eye then with Death the supreme vampire. Deemed by Alfred Hitchcock 'the only film worth watching... twice' Vampyr's influence has become by now incalculable. Long out of circulation in an acceptable transfer The Masters of Cinema Series is proud to present Dreyer's truly terrifying film in its film restored form for the first time in the UK on DVD.

from £6.93
| Saving you £33.06 (477.06%)
| RRP No more good news everybody--this fourth series of Futurama is the show's last. By turns frenetic and far-sighted, Matt Groening's futuristic comedy provided belly-laughs for self-confessed SF nerds, but somehow failed to connect with a broader audience, even though it was often funnier and sharper than stablemate The Simpsons. So now bid farewell to the Planet Express team--Fry, Leela, Zoidberg, Bender, Amy, Hermes, Prof Farnsworth--as well as to kindly Kif, cloned Cubert, megalomaniac Mom, mutants in the sewer, the cast of robo-sitcom All My Circuits, swashbuckling space lothario and William Shatner wannabe Zapp Brannigan, Elzar the four-armed chef, and all the other characters that made Futurama such a unique experience. This fourth and final year has all the elements that fans enjoyed so much--but also those elements that partially explain its cancellation. Recurring characters are great if you've watched the show before, as are the in-jokes; and the many parodies of classic science fiction are fine for the initiated, but risk leaving other viewers out in the cold. The show's strengths and perceived weaknesses are exemplified in the episode "Where No Fan Has Gone Before", in which the original cast of Star Trek play themselves: hilarious for Trekkers, but not really for anyone else. Elsewhere we find Leela discovering her real parents aren't aliens at all but in fact live in the sewers; Kif getting pregnant; Fry discovering the fossilised remains of his faithful pet dog; and Bender being converted to steam power. Despite some ups and downs, it's still the funniest animated show on TV. Those responsible for cancelling it can bite my shiny metal On the DVD: Futurama, Series 4 DVD box set includes a "Play All" function on each disc. Colette | Blu Ray | (13/05/2019)
from £4.93

| RRP Unconventional country girl Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette has married a charismatic egomaniacal man of letters, 14 years her senior, known by the single name, Willy. Through his auspices, Colette is introduced into the fecund world of the artistic demimonde in Paris where her creative appetite is sparked. Ever quick to capitalise on talent, Willy permits Colette to write her novels only if she does so in his name. The phenomenal success of her Claudine series makes Willy a famous writer and Colette and Willy the first modern celebrity couple. Although they are the toast of the town, lack of recognition for her work begins to gnaw on Colette. Their marriage starts to internally combust, fuelled by Willy's infidelities and Colette's growing interest in women - particularly her relationship with the gender-defying Missy - but emotionally and artistically, she cannot break free of him. On a downward slide, Willy resorts to increasingly desperate measures to pay his debts and sabotage his wife but Colette is developing resources of her own. Set at the dawn of the modern age, COLETTE is the story of a woman who has been denied her voice by an overbearing man, and who goes to extraordinary lengths to find it; a battle of the sexes at the very beginning of the modern age, when seismic shifts were taking place in the roles of men and women. More than a century after the publication of her first novel, Colette is still one of the best-selling, and beloved, French authors. Unfortunately, because Willy convinced her to ghostwrite for him, she doesn't get any of the credit for the phenomenon that her novel becomes. And in the years to come, while her and Willy's adventures become the talk of Paris, she defies everyone to get her name on the books she writes. Keira Knightley stars as Colette' in this acclaimed drama, alongside Dominic West as Willy.
