In Predator, Rambo meets Alien in a terrific science fiction thriller directed by John McTiernan just a year before Die Hard made him Hollywood's most sought-after director of action-packed blockbusters. Arnold Schwarzenegger leads an elite squad of US Army commandos to a remote region of South American jungle, where they've been assigned to search for South American officials who've been kidnapped by terrorists. Instead they find a bunch of skinned corpses hanging from the trees and realise that they're now facing a mysterious and much deadlier threat. As the squad is picked off one by one, Arnold finds himself pitted against a hideous alien creature that's heavily armed and wearing a spacesuit enabling the creature to render itself invisible. The title says it all in describing the relentless, escalating action that follows, maintained by McTiernan with an abundance of visual flair. The film's special effects are still impressive, and stunning locations in the Mexican jungles create a combined atmosphere of verdant beauty and imminent danger. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com
KEOMA's creators - Italian director Enzo G. Castellari and its star, legendary actor Franco Nero - are icons to Quentin Tarantino, who famously called Castellari 'My Master' when reimagining his 'Inglorious Bastards' (even inviting him for a cameo). Equally a devoted fan of Nero - who rose to fame as the original anti-hero Django - Tarantino also gave him a scene-stealing appearance in his tribute, 'Django Unchained'. Keoma's bold visual style - marked by Castellari's extravagant slow-motion, dynamic camera work, and operatic violence -left a lasting mark on Tarantino's filmography, revealing how deeply these Italian trendsetters shaped one of Hollywood's most influential directors. Screen-legend Franco Nero reprises his relentless deadly gunslinger persona, now as the eponymous Keoma who, returning to his hometown, finds it ruled by a gang of sadistic killers. With the help of his old friend (a superb Woody Strode), Keoma unleashes a brutal and bloody war against the ruthless bunch in a bitter showdown where only one man will be left standing. This gritty, no-holds-barred western classic is now presented from 2K restored vault materials, finally showcasing its iconic set pieces and striking action cinematography like never before. SPECIAL FEATURES: EXTRAS: Interview with Director Enzo G. Castellari - whom he famously called 'My Master' - often cites Keoma' as one of his favorite spaghetti westerns. He admires its operatic violence, dynamic camera work, and how it subverts traditional western tropes. Tarantino's love for the film has helped bring it renewed attention among modern audiences. The Spaghetti Western Database: one of the most unusual and visually striking spaghetti westerns ever made a masterpiece of the genre. Cinephilia & Beyond commend Castellari's direction and the film's willingness to tackle deeper issues like racism, family, and redemption: haunting and poetic western
Ice Age (Dirs.Chris Wedge & Carlos Saldanha 2002): A star-studded cast provides the voices for the prehistoric creatures in this computer-animated feature set 20 000 years ago as the Ice Age approaches. Seemingly anti-social Manny a woolly mammoth (voiced by Ray Romano) acts as if he just wants to be left alone. When he meets Sid (voiced by John Leguizamo) a sloth the two become unlikely traveling companions. The plot thickens when the duo finds a human infant and decides to try to return the child to its ""herd"". Manny slowly but surely reveals his heart of gold while Sid continues to provide comic relief. Diego (voiced by Denis Leary) a saber-tooth tiger with ulterior motives soon joins them in their search for the humans. Ultimately this group of misfits becomes its own herd learning about friendship and loyalty as they brave snow ice freezing temperatures predators hail and even boiling lava pits. All the while a saber-tooth squirrel Scrat provides comic relief as he valiantly struggles with an acorn. A well-written humorous script and endearing characters mesh well with the state-of-the-art technology and effects. Other stars lending their voices to the feature include Goran Visnjic Jack Black and Jane Krakowski. Ice Age 2: The Meltdown (Dir. Carlos Saldanha 2006: Manny the woolly mammoth Sid the sloth Diego the saber-toothed tiger and the hapless prehistoric squirrel/rat known as Scrat: those sub-zero heroes are back! Manny may be ready to start a family but nobody has seen another mammoth for a long time; in fact Manny thinks he may be the last one. Oh and Ellie somehow thinks she's a possum! Ellie comes with some excess baggage in the form of her two possum ""brothers"" Crash and Eddie (voiced by Seann William Scott and Josh Peck) a couple of daredevil pranksters and cocky loud-mouthed troublemakers. Manny Sid and Diego quickly learn that the warming climate has one major drawback: a huge glacial dam holding off oceans of water is about to break threatening the entire valley. The only chance of survival lies at the other end of the valley. So our three heroes along with Ellie Crash and Eddie form the most unlikely family as they embark on a mission across an ever-changing increasingly dangerous landscape...
The Bells Of St. Mary's (Dir. Leo McCarey 1945): This Going My Way sequel stars Bing Crosby reprising his role as worldly-wise Father Chuck O'Malley and introduces Crosby's beloved song Aren't You Glad You're You? Father O'Malley is transferred to the soon-to-be-condemned school run by Sister Benedict (Ingrid Bergman) and the two quickly match wits and stubbornness eventually finding a middle ground. A surprisingly light touch of sentimentality and humor gives this film by director Leo McCarey a glow of genuine feeling that effortlessly captures viewers' hearts. Going My Way (Dir. Leo McCarey 1944): Youthful Father Chuck O'Malley (Bing Crosby) led a colorful life of sports song and romance before joining the Roman Catholic clergy but his level gaze and twinkling eyes make it clear that he knows he made the right choice. After joining a parish O'Malley's worldly knowledge helps him connect with a gang of kids looking for direction and handle the business details of the church-building fund winning over his aging conventional superior (Barry Fitzgerald). Songs such as Swinging on a Star sparkle and both Crosby and Fitzgerald do a fine job tugging at the heartstrings in a gentle irresistible way that will make viewers return to this lovely film again and again.
A flawed but stylish adaptation of the Chester Gould comic strip by director Warren Beatty, who also stars in the title role. The minimalist plot involves a battalion of baddies who confront the intrepid detective in a series of strung-together vignettes. Al Pacino is a comedic if overblown standout as Big Boy Caprice and Madonna simply smoulders as aggressive blonde bombshell Breathless Mahoney. It matters not that the plot is Spartan, as this dazzling eye candy is much enhanced by Stephen Sondheim's songs, including the Academy Award-winning ditty, "Sooner or Later (I Always Get My Man)". Beatty took his cue from the source material and concentrated on the relationships between these people, whether strained, romantic or hateful. The performances are subtle and more amusing than you would expect from such a visually bold picture. Shot in bright, primary colours, this also won Oscars for Best Art/Set Direction and Makeup (for those inventively hideous criminals). Watch for well-known names, such as Dustin Hoffman and Dick Van Dyke, in cameo appearances and supporting roles. --Rochelle O'Gorman
