This 4disc DVD set features all 14 episodes of Wood's adventures. Walking the Nile sees the British explorer's expedition to walk the length of the River Nile from source to sea. His ninemonth, seven million step journey takes him through jungles, savannah, deserts, cities and war zones in some of the continents's most remote and spectacular locations. A long the way, he encounters modern Africa, its people and its wild life facetoface. The Nile remains one of the last holy grails in exploration no one has ever completed its entire length on foot. Levison's goal is to reach the Mediterranean Sea wherever lies in his way and wherever the Nile takes him for 4200 miles. The river pushes him to the edge of his mental and physical limits as he is forced to live off his wits and bushcraft skills. Walking the Himalayas sees Levison push himself to his physical limits as he is forced through remote, punishing terrain and altitudes above 5000m where he suffers from a debilitating lack of oxygen. As well as battling natural obstacles, he has to tread carefully through one of the most foughtover areas of the world walking through Afghanistan, crossing the Line of Control between Pakistan and India, navigating the disputed territory of Kashmir and making his way through Nepal as it recovers and tries to rebuild itself after the recent earthquakes. Walking the Americas sees Levison return to Mexico, where he lived for three months and Belize where he trained as a soldier with the British Army before he steps into a part of the world he's never visited before and some of the most diverse, beautiful and unpredictable regions on earth. Levison's expedition takes in ancient Mayan ruins still lying unexplored in the jungles of Guatemala and Honduras, the incredible wildlife diversity in Costa Rica's cloud forests, Nicaragua's active volcanoes, the Panama Canal and the Darien Gap on a sometimes brutal journey.

Screenwriters rarely develop a distinctive voice that can be recognized from movie to movie, but the ornate imagination of Charlie Kaufman (Being John Malkovich, Adaptation) has made him a unique and much-needed cinematic presence. In Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, a guy decides to have the memories of his ex-girlfriend erased after she's had him erased from her own memory--but midway through the procedure, he changes his mind and struggles to hang on to their experiences together. In other hands, the premise of memory-erasing would become a trashy science-fiction thriller; Kaufman, along with director Michel Gondry, spins this idea into a funny, sad, structurally complex, and simply enthralling love story that juggles morality, identity, and heartbreak with confident skill. The entire cast--Jim Carrey, Kate Winslet, Kirsten Dunst, Elijah Wood, Mark Ruffalo, Tom Wilkinson, and more--give superb performances, carefully pitched so that cleverness never trumps feeling. A great movie. --Bret Fetzer

  • U.S. Marshals [1998]U.S. Marshals | DVD | (04/01/1999) from £7.19   |  Saving you £6.80 (94.58%)   |  RRP £13.99

An ultimately futile attempt to make lightning strike twice, this so-called spin-off from 1993's blockbuster The Fugitive avoids the label of "sequel" by forging ahead without the first film's star, Harrison Ford. The idea is to showcase the return of Tommy Lee Jones in his Oscar-winning role as tenacious U.S. Marshal Sam Gerard, this time testing his mettle against a covert government operative (Wesley Snipes) accused of murdering two secret service attachés. Unfortunately, Jones and the entire cast have been trapped in a rambling plot, and the underdog status that made Ford such a compelling hero is sacrificed to an evenly matched and eventually tiresome game of cat and mouse, with a villain whose identity is far too predictable. With no dramatic build-up and several superfluous characters to distract its focus, the film's momentum plays out like a rote exercise compared to the high stakes of the earlier film. --Jeff Shannon

Based on the DC character, Kara Zor-El (series star MELISSA BENOIST) decides to embrace her superhuman abilities and be the hero she was always meant to be. Twelve-year-old Kara escaped the doomed planet Krypton with her parents' help at the same time as the infant Kal-El. Protected and raised on Earth by her foster parents, Jeremiah and Eliza Danvers (guest stars DEAN CAIN and HELEN SLATER), Kara grew up in the shadow of her foster sister, Alex (series star CHYLER LEIGH), and learned to conceal the phenomenal powers she shares with her famous cousin, Superman (TYLER HOECHLIN) in order to keep her identity a secret. Years later, Kara was living a normal life in National City and still concealing her powers, when a plane crash threatened Alex's life and Kara took to the sky to rescue her. In the aftermath, Kara decided she could no longer sit on the sidelines and came out as Supergirl. She now balances her job as a reporter for CatCo Worldwide Media, alongside her famous friend and Editor in Chief, James Olsen (series star MEHCAD BROOKS) with her work for the Department of Extra-Normal Operations (DEO), a super-secret government organization run by her sister Alex. At the DEO, Kara also gets help from her friends, J'onn J'onzz (series star DAVID HAREWOOD), the Martian Manhunter, Brainac-5 (new series regular JESSE RATH), and Lena Luthor (series regular KATIE McGRATH), who doesn't know Supergirl's true identity is that of her best friend Kara Danvers. In season four, Supergirl is facing a bigger threat than she's ever faced before a new wave of anti-alien sentiment, spreading across National City that's fomented by Agent Liberty (new series regular SAM WITWER). As Kara mentors a new reporter at CatCo, Nia Nal (new series regular NICOLE MAINES), and tries to use the power of the press to shine a light on the issues threatening to tear the city apart, Supergirl takes to the skies to battle the many villains who rise up in this era of divisiveness. But how does Supergirl battle a movement when she, herself an alien, represents one of the main things people are fearful of?

  • The Sixth Sense [1999]The Sixth Sense | DVD | (08/01/2001) from £5.19   |  Saving you £14.80 (285.16%)   |  RRP £19.99

I see dead people," whispers little Cole Sear (Haley Joel Osment), scared to affirm what is to him now a daily occurrence. This peaked nine-year old, already hypersensitive to begin with, is now being haunted by seemingly malevolent spirits. Child psychologist Malcolm Crowe (Bruce Willis) is trying to find out what's triggering Cole's visions, but what appears to be a psychological manifestation turns out to be frighteningly real. It might be enough to scare off a lesser man, but for Malcolm it's personal--several months before, he was accosted and shot by an unhinged patient, who then turned the gun on himself. Since then, Malcolm has been in turmoil--he and his wife (Olivia Williams) are barely speaking, and his life has taken an aimless turn. Having failed his loved ones and himself, he's not about to give up on Cole. The Sixth Sense, M Night Shyamalan's third feature, sets itself up as a thriller, poised on the brink of delivering monstrous scares, but gradually evolves into more of a psychological drama with supernatural undertones. Many critics faulted the film for being mawkish and New Age-y, but no matter how you slice it, this is one mightily effective piece of filmmaking. The bare bones of the story are basic enough, but the moody atmosphere created by Shyamalan and cinematographer Tak Fujimoto made this one of the creepiest pictures of 1999, forsaking excessive gore for a sinisterly simple feeling of chilly otherworldliness. Willis is in his strong, silent type mode here, and gives the film wholly over to Osment, whose crumpled face and big eyes convey a child too wise for his years; his scenes with his mother (Toni Collette) are small, heartbreaking marvels. And even if you figure out the film's surprise ending, it packs an amazingly emotional wallop when it comes, and will have you racing to watch the movie again with a new perspective. You may be able to shake off the sentimentality of The Sixth Sense, but its craftsmanship and atmosphere will stay with you for days. --Mark Englehart
