I watched this DVD with a degree of trepidation as I have read all three of the books in this series and with my own interpretation of the main characters already firmly planted in my imagination I was anxious in case the film version didn't live up to my expectations.
I needn't have worried! The brilliantly detailed descriptions provided by the author Stieg Larsson formed such an excellent blueprint that they allowed for the cast to be chosen with amazing accuracy. It left me almost believing the actors actually were the characters from the book!
Rapace gives a powerful performance as Salander the angry, antisocial, computer hacker (known as Wasp) who has a photographic memory and Asperger's syndrome. The legally mentally incompetent waif of a girl is subjected to abuse and a sadistically brutal rape by her legal guardian Nils Bjurman which translates shockingly and graphically to the screen as does Salander's revenge which takes the form of a bloody and crudely done tattoo across the torso of her aggressor. The film is gritty and has numerous explicitly violent scenes (including a sickening glimpse inside the hideous torture chamber of a serial killer) but these are vital to the plot and in my opinion are not overdone. In fact the violence provides stark contrast to the tenderness and fragility, and somewhat innocence, of the relationship that begins to develop between the two main characters.
The film ends in the same way as the book leaving many threads undone ready to be dealt with in the next film. The DVD offers a choice of soundtracks between Swedish with subtitles (my preference) or dubbed into English. A Hollywood version starring Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara is on its way for 2011 though, personally, I think they will be struggling to match this original Swedish one.

As someone who has read the books and wholly enjoyed them, I wanted to see how the adaptations faired. I was surprised that it is hugely faithful to the novel, bar a character or two being pushed to the background and the addition of scenes from the subsequent novels, in order to set up a greater mystery and place characters straight away. Noomi Rapace is the standout obviously, she carries the film effectively playing the stilted heroine to a degree where you are puzzled by her and understand her. Michael Nyqvist is also brilliant as the wronged journalist turned detective. There is a glossy feel to the film, whilst I felt it should have been alot gritty and dirtier, but overall it is a brilliant start to a great trilogy.
