Malin Buska, Sarah Gadon and Michael Nyqvist star in this historical drama about Queen Kristina of Sweden. After the death of her father, Kristina (Buska) ascends to the throne at the age of six and starts ruling after she turns 18. She soon clashes with the country's male-dominated and conservative high society for her interest in philosophy and politics and her reluctance to marry and provide an heir to the throne. Instead, she concentrates on her studies and forges an intimate relationship with her lady-in-waiting Countess Ebba Sparre (Gadon).
