Catalogue Ref ARD56-3 Style Klezmer Label ARD Released 2005 CD Length 60:00 Description Released on 26th September 2005, a DVD by the award winning director Uwe Scheffler, who took up the challenge of visualising the complex spirit of Klezmer music. With almost no spoken commentary he followed the melodic strands from the Logensaal to the Jewish synagogue in Cracow, through Auschwitz and Birkenau as well as to the Holocaust memorials in Israel. Feidman brought in an eclectic mix of musicians; the Jewish artist Dan Rubinstein created drawings to enrich the musical-visual reconstruction of the Jewish German past. Feidman is one of the great Jewish musicians of our time, and is known internationally for his achievements in reviving the Jewish tradition of Klezmer music. Tracks include Kiddush, Tanz, Summertime (Gershwin), Schindler's list, Ave Maria (Schubert), and many other fascinating tunes. Recorded in 2000 at the Thomaskirche in Leipzig where the composer worked as Cantor for 25 years, this performance of Bach's Mass in B minor is a commemorative concert marking the 250th anniversary of his birthday. The conductor here, Georg Christoph Biller, was himself Cantor in 2000, while most members of the ensemble have strong links with the Bach tradition. Hence, this is a faithfully authentic, if orthodox rendering of the work. The Mass itself, however--composed in 1748-9, a year or so before he died--is somewhat unorthodox. To begin with it's a Latin mass, itself an odd choice for a protestant Cantor, and even so does not follow the conventions of a Catholic mass, split as it is into four rather than five parts. Using the full range of his compositional skills, it seems that what the ailing Bach intended here was church music that transcended the bounds of creed, a glorious musical valediction that soars aloft into the cathedral rafters and beyond. Certainly, this is the feeling evoked in the performances of English soprano Ruth Holton, among others. The power of the performances is poignantly contrasted with visual extracts of Bach's original score, his enfeebled handwriting indicative of his failing health. Yet the Mass in B minor has succeeded in achieving immortality and universality--a fine last testament from a composer who seems to have more resonance with contemporary audiences than most of his classical descendants. On the DVD: The aspect ratio is 16:9. There are various subtitles but no extra features. --David Stubbs

Fondly called La Fenice - evoking the myth of the Phoenix bird that periodically burns itself in order to rise again from the ashes as a symbol of eternal renewal - the Venetian theatre has burned to the ground twice since it opened in 1792. Following the first fire, during the night of 12/13 December 1836 it was rebuilt according to the original plans by Tommaso and Giambattista Meduna on a new site, the Campo San Fantin, where it has now been rebuilt following the second fire on the night of 29/30 January 1996, which reduced the theatre to its bare foundations. When the legendary Phoenix finally rose from the ashes again in 2003, its rebirth was celebrated with a series of concerts. Riccardo Muti, musical director of Italy's other world-famous opera house - La Scala, conducted the official inaugural gala concert on December 14th. In the presence of the Italian President, Carlo Ciampi, Muti conducted La Fenice's choir and orchestra together with some of the best Italian singers in an unusual but truly Venetian programme.
