  Beat Beat Beat was a German music programme that ran during the sixties. Not to be confused with the other well known German pop programme Beat Club Beat Beat Beat was broadcast out of Frankfurt commencing in 1966. The programme ran to 26 episodes between its launch in 1966 and the final programme in January 1969 all of which are still in the German television archives. The shows were eclectic affairs and included performances by artists as diverse as Eric Burdon and the New Animals The Move Sam and Dave Cat Stevens and Barry Ryan to name just a few. This volume of the Beat Beat Beat series of releases features four magnificent performances from The Hollies in January 1967. During the sixties the Hollies were up there with the Beatles and The Rolling Stones in terms of chart supremacy and regularly managed to hit the top ten singles charts. This performance features the line up that included Allan Clarke and Graham Nash on vocals singing three of their biggest worldwide hits with Stop Stop Stop On A Carousel and Bus Stop which was written by future music star and fellow Mancunian Graham Gouldman.   Bodas de sangre (Blood Wedding) depicts the story of a bride who, on her wedding night, runs away with her former lover, now a married man with a child of his own. The furious groom follows them, and a fight to the death ensues between the two men. Choreographed by Antonio Gades in 1974, this ballet is the essence of the work of Federico Garca Lorca, a poet and playwright whose vision here melded with that of ancient Spain. Suite flamenca consists of seven pieces of traditional flamenco dance, solos, duets and group dances, presented with Gadess own unique insight on the aesthetics of flamenco dance. Gadess interpretation initially described as avant-garde is now considered as classic. With flawless solo performances by Stella Arauzo and Miguel Lara, and artists from the Compaa Antonio Gades, this is a performance to enjoy.

  Recorded in 2000 at the Thomaskirche in Leipzig where the composer worked as Cantor for 25 years, this performance of Bach's Mass in B minor is a commemorative concert marking the 250th anniversary of his birthday. The conductor here, Georg Christoph Biller, was himself Cantor in 2000, while most members of the ensemble have strong links with the Bach tradition. Hence, this is a faithfully authentic, if orthodox rendering of the work. The Mass itself, however--composed in 1748-9, a year or so before he died--is somewhat unorthodox. To begin with it's a Latin mass, itself an odd choice for a protestant Cantor, and even so does not follow the conventions of a Catholic mass, split as it is into four rather than five parts. Using the full range of his compositional skills, it seems that what the ailing Bach intended here was church music that transcended the bounds of creed, a glorious musical valediction that soars aloft into the cathedral rafters and beyond. Certainly, this is the feeling evoked in the performances of English soprano Ruth Holton, among others. The power of the performances is poignantly contrasted with visual extracts of Bach's original score, his enfeebled handwriting indicative of his failing health. Yet the Mass in B minor has succeeded in achieving immortality and universality--a fine last testament from a composer who seems to have more resonance with contemporary audiences than most of his classical descendants. On the DVD: The aspect ratio is 16:9. There are various subtitles but no extra features. --David Stubbs
