SalzburgThe Places:Mozart's father Leopold settled in Salzburg in 1737 an din 1744 entered the service of the city's ruling Prince-Archbishop as a violinist. The city underwent various changes of regime in the first years of the nineteenth century but in 1825 Schubert could express his wonder at the fine churches and palaces of the place. The Music:The music includes movements directly connected with Salzburg compositions for distinguished local families members of the Mozarts' social circle and works resulting from his visit in 1777-78 to Mannheim. Other compositions come from the remarkable final decade of Mozart's life when he was living in Vienna culminating in the Lacrimosa from the unfinished Requiem of 1791 a movement that he is said to have tried to sing with his friends on his death-bed.
Gustavo Dudamel and the glorious Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela perform a whole host of wonderful arrangements of classics, including Beethoven's "Triple Concerto" and "Pictures at an Exhibition" by Mussorgsky.
Steve Hackett is best known for his tenure with British rock band Genesis. Steve joined the band in December 1970 following the departure offormer guitarist and founder member of Genesis Anthony Phillips. The first Genesis album to feature Steve Hackett was Nursery Cryme released inlate 1971.For the next seven years Steve would make a huge contribution to Genesis and their slow but sure climb to huge success as a band. Following thealbums Foxtrot, Selling England By The Pound, The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway, A Trick Of The Tail and Wind And Wuthering Steve decided toleave the band in the summer of 1977 making the Live album Seconds Out his Swansong and continue with a solo career which had started withhis first solo release Voyage Of The Acolyte.OVERVIEWFurther albums followed including Please Don't Touch and Spectral Mornings. In fact Steve has had a flourishing solo career ever since andcontinues to record and release albums and tour regularly. The bulk of the content on this DVD was taken from a performance filmed on the 8th of November 1978 for German television. The concertrecording was the last date on the hugely successful tour although only the fourteenth concert the band had played so from a historical point of viewthis was right at the start of Steve's solo career and as such captures a moment in time. The band performed a shortened set for the television cameras and it has been mastered in the NTSC format in order that American and Japanesefans may also now enjoy this historical performance. This DVD was originally available as a VHS tape and briefly as a DVD.As an added bonus we have included tracks filmed at the same time as thisperformance but for some reason these tracks were not included in the broadcast. These tracks have now been included and the set nowrepresents the actual running order of the complete performance.Over thirty years on from his departure from Genesis Steve Hackett retains a large and dedicated fan base making this release all the moredesirable.
The Curse of The Swastika a classic British Pathe documentary from 1940 illustrates the insidious rise of the Nazi Party from its post World War One origins through Adolf Hitlers conniving to become the leader of the party and eventual dictator of his self-styled Third Reich. The twisted logic of the scape-goating of the Jews the development of the dreaded Nazi concentration camps the construction of the Siegfried Line and the dynamic tensions and botched compromises of all European inter-war politics that led to the annexation of Austria and the Sudetenland before the eventual declaration of war with the invasion of Poland are all explored. The Battle of the River Plate in December 1939 the preparedness of French troops for the Battle For France and the sinking of the Graf Spee by Admiral Harwood and the British Navy feature heavily in this call to arms giving us a unique slant on the reasons for the start of the Second World War and The Curse of The Swastika.
The Vienna Philharmonic's annual New Year's Concert is the most listened-to and viewed concert event in the world. Willi Boskovsky's name is inseparably connected with this legendary annual event - he directed it 25 times from 1955 to 1979 more often than any other conductor. With violin in hand his Viennese charm and a beguiling sense of humour he brought to Strauss's music an infallible feeling for its dance-like verve. Here for the first time on video you can relive his gold

The latest addition to the acclaimed & award winning Classic Albums series tells the story behind the making of Peter Gabriel's 1986 album So. It was Gabriel's fifth solo album and the first one to have a title (the others all having just been called Peter Gabriel). The album spawned a number of hit singles on both sides of the Atlantic including Sledgehammer, Big Time, Don't Give Up (a duet with Kate Bush) and In Your Eyes which drove So to multi-platinum sales, the No.1 spot in the UK and No.2 in the US. So was very much an album of the MTV generation and the distinctive videos for tracks like Sledgehammer, Red Rain, Big Time and Don't Give Up were key factors in the album's success. The programme features contributions from many of those involved in the making of the album and the videos including Peter Gabriel himself, co-producer Daniel Lanois, engineer Kevin Killen and musicians Jerry Marotta, Laurie Anderson, Tony Levin and Manu Katch amongst many.
This Glyndebourne production of Prokofiev's comic fairy tale opera The Love of Three Oranges recorded in 1982 is nothing short of a sizzling visual extravaganza. The combination of Frank Corsaro's innovative direction and the brilliant creative designs of American book writer and illustrator Maurice Sendak have created an opera which mixes fantasy nightmare romance and satire. The whole production is alive with acrobats jugglers body-builders monsters outrageous inflatable figures colossal puppets and special animated sequences - creating a farcical carnival atmosphere. Willard White powerfully portrays the King whose son a doleful hypochondriac can only be cured through laughter. The antics of the court jester Truffaldino fail to raise even a giggle and it is only when the wicked witch Fata Morgana (Nelly Morpurgo) accidently loses her skirt that the Prince (Ryland Davies) breaks into hysterics. In revenge Morgana condemns the Prince to fall in love with three oranges which he pursues for three thousand miles. The exciting rhythms and brilliant orchestration of Prokofiev's score are conducted by Bernard Haitink. The cast also includes Nucci Condo (Clarissa) John Pringle (Leandro) Ugo Benelli (Truffaldino) Peter-Christoph Runge (Pantaloon) Richard Van Allan (Tchelio) Yvonne Lea (Princess Linetta) Susan Moore (Princess Nicoletta) Fiona Kimm (Smeraldina) Colette Alliot-Lugaz (Princess Ninetta) Roger Bryson (Herald/Cook) Hugh Hetherington (Master of Ceremonies) and Derek Hammond-Stroud (Farfarello).
