  This three-hour compilation surveying the life and works of Tchaikovsky, Puccini and Mahler completes the BBC Great Composers series (the two previous releases contain the pairings of Bach/Mozart and Beethoven/Wagner). It's a splendid series, full of judiciously collected biographical information, lively and telling visuals, colourful anecdotes and excellent excerpted performances of the composers' best works. The directors' styles are very different, from Kriss Rusmanis' impressionistic approach (with an early chamber piece of Mahler's accompanied by shots of rippling brooks and dappled sunlight) to Chris Hunt's more forthright take on Puccini, but each is well tailored to the subject matter. There is a certain amount of psychological speculation in each case (Mahler may have inherited his sense of irony from watching nine of his siblings die while the jolly life of his father's tavern continued unabated, for example) but there's nothing outrageous. If you haven't hooked up your TV to some decent speakers the performances may sound a little pinched, but they are so good the quality shines through nonetheless; particularly noteworthy is Thomas Hampson's glorious reading of excerpts from Kindertotenlieder, and Georg Solti is on top form. On the DVD: Great Composers on disc comes with subtitles in English, French, German, Spanish and Italian, but no other special features. --Warwick Thompson

  Formed in 1964 in North London by Brothers Ray and Dave Davies, The Kinks incredible career spanned over three decades. To this day they are still recognised as one of the most important and influential bands of the era. Hitting the big time with their third single “You Really Got Me” the band went on to release a series of critically acclaimed albums. Not only hugely successful in their own right they were also inspiration for many other bands in the late 70’s and 80’s with the likes of Van Halen, The Jam and The Pretenders all covering their songs. Using archive footage and interviews with Ray Davies, former Managers Larry Page and Robert Wace this fascinating programme tells the story of this great band. Also featured is music footage of some of the bands greatest tracks including You Really Got Me Going, Tired of Waiting for You, Set me Free, Sunday Afternoon, Waterloo Sunset, Lola, Plastic Man, Dead End Street, Mr Pleasant and Apeman.   On December 14th 2000 Culture Burning Spear and the Wailers all arrived in South Africa to perform three historic shows organized by Justin Engels of the label/distributor Revolver Records. Although Culture had performed in many African countries before this would be his first time in South Africa.December 15th is the day the schools all let out in Capetown and it was the night of our first show. Culture has been the biggest selling group for Revolver for many years and the night was full of anticipation as he hit the stage. The crowd of 10 000 was made up of white surfer kids middle class blacks and many dreads from the Capetown area. Once Culture was jamming the crowd was united as one people. There was no more thought of apartheid only a united free South Africa. Backstage the promoter told me in all his years promoting shows in South Africa he had never witnessed anything like this people all jamming together as one.
