Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em - The Complete Second Series | DVD | (21/10/2002)

| RRP Although Britain has changed almost beyond recognition since Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em was first broadcast in the early 1970s, the show's simple slapstick humour has an ageless quality that makes it enduringly hilarious. Michael Crawford found fame as Frank Spencer, still probably television's most accident-prone man, and still Britain's most mimicked sitcom character, having inspired thousands of wannabe entertainers to don black berets and Humphrey Bogart-style rain coats and feebly exclaim "Mmm, Betty!". Crawford's great insight was to portray Frank as both a figure of fun and an endearingly sympathetic character: we laugh at him but never cease liking him, and we always admire his plucky never-say-die spirit. Most of the episodes share the common theme of Frank attempting to find a job (ranging from a holiday camp entertainer to an RAF cadet), but because of his clumsy demeanour and lack of common sense, losing the positions within a matter of hours. Pitted against a variety of middle-aged, male professionals (his GP, a psychiatrist and a public relations consultant for example), Spencer's stupidity reduces these "experts" to nervous wrecks. His long-suffering, doting wife Betty (Michelle Dotrice) features throughout, but despite his wild behaviour and idiocy she appears only mildly flustered by her husband's actions. On the DVD: Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em was one of the first comedy series to be recorded by the BBC in colour, but the sound and vision of the episodes transfer perfectly satisfactorily to DVD format. At times the production values of some of the episodes are decidedly ropey (watch out for stray boom microphones and the skewed opening and closing credit). Apart from the episode and scene selection menus, which incorporate sound extracts from the show, no extras are included. --John Galilee

| RRP After a few appearances on various television shows ex-Cambridge University students Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie finally got the chance to shine in their very own A Bit Of Fry And Laurie. Full of turns of phrase and elaborate wordplay A Bit Of Fry And Laurie was the kind of sophisticated comedy that had been little seen on British TV screens. With an old-fashioned revue-type atmosphere and oddly 'British' sketches the delicate innuendos coupled with Fry's ability to suggest hidden meanings in everyday phrases were a winning formula that allowed the pair to continue their partnership for almost 10 years.

Minder - Series 1 - Parts 1 To 4 | DVD | (06/08/2001)
from £N/A
| Saving you £N/A (N/A%)
| RRP First appearing on our screens in late 1979, Minder was a vehicle for ex-Sweeney sidekick Denis Waterman, but its lasting contribution to TV culture was rehabilitating George Cole, whose loveable but unscrupulous "entrepreneur" (an older version of the spiv he portrayed in the St Trinians films) mockingly reflected the values of 1980s Thatcherite Britain. Set in the rough demimonde of London, against a backdrop of small-time gangsters, seedy pubs, dubious business dealings and ageing dollybirds, Waterman plays Terry McCann, ex-boxer and ex-con trying to stick to the straight and narrow but persuaded against his better judgement to become involved in murky capers set up by his employer "Arfur" who regularly sublets him to associates of his. Though aspects of these episodes are a little creaky and dated--Terrys flares especially--the interplay between the too soft-hearted hardman Waterman and his dapper but slippery boss is both priceless and timeless. --David Stubbs

Honeymoon In Vegas | DVD | (07/06/2004)
from £4.90
| Saving you £1.09 (22.24%)
| RRP Writer-director Andrew Bergman is capable of funny, funny stuff, but Honeymoon in Vegas runs out of jokes long before it runs out of comic ideas. The result is a series of comedy concepts that never get past the one-liner stage and are distinctly unsatisfying. Still, there is plenty to be amused by in this story of a reluctant bridegroom (Nicolas Cage) who finally agrees to marriage, only to lose his fiancée (Sarah Jessica Parker) in a crooked poker game to a professional gambler (James Caan). The rest of the movie deals with his frantic attempt to get his fiancée back, while coping with a Vegas in the throes of an Elvis-impersonator convention. That's the funniest thing about the whole movie (most notably the team of parachuting Elvises at the end), but even that is drawn out in ways that are more clever than laughter-inducing.--Marshall Fine, Amazon.com
