Puppetry Of The Penis | DVD | (19/11/2001)
from £N/A
| Saving you £N/A (N/A%)
| RRP There is nothing more entertaining than a grown man putting his arm up something furry and talking to it on daytime television, but nothing comes close to the entertainment factor of Puppetry of the Penis, the two-member show that wowed the Edinburgh festival and probably the strangest 50 minutes of entertainment you will ever experience. The creators of this strange puppetry are two lads hailing from Melbourne--David Friend and Simon Morley--who use an altogether different kind of marionette: their penises. This small-screen version of the Puppetry of the Penis (subtitled "The Ancient Art of Genital Origami") is filmed live at Melbourne's Forum theatre. Basically the guys do exactly what it says on the box, strip down to their socks and shoes and then manipulate their members into all manner of objects. Highlights include the Lock Ness monster (obviously added for the festival), the hamburger and their "penis de resistance", the windsurfer, which with the aid of a skateboard and fan signals their final exit. Funny and original as the concept is, this is the kind of show that definitely loses something on screen. Although it tries to capture some of the hilarity ensuing from the predominantly female hen-night audience by panning over the crowd, you can't help feeling that you are missing part of the joke. But some of the "dick tricks" are eye-wateringly funny, and if nothing else it's not every show where you get a quick tutorial into how to make your penis look like Ronald MacDonald's fave food. On the DVD: Although the show itself is only 50-min long, you also get a brilliant "Cockstars", a 45-min "Fly on the Wall" mockumentary, which details the twosome's rise to fame. And what about the disc itself? Well, you can cop a load of the boys in dramatic full-frame transfer and titter along with the Dolby Surround soundtrack; there is even a "Dick Trick" book, so that you can really can try these at home. --Kristen Bowditch
Men Behaving Badly - Series 3 | DVD | (05/06/2000)
from £4.90
| Saving you £15.09 (307.96%)
| RRP The ultimate small-screen representation of Loaded-era lad culture--albeit a culture constantly being undermined by its usually sharper female counterpart--there seems little argument that Men Behaving Badly was one of 1990s' definitive sitcoms. Certainly the booze-oriented, birds-obsessed antics of Martin Clunes' Gary and Neil Morrissey's Tony have become every bit as connected to Britain's collective funny bone as Basil Fawlty's inept hostelry or Ernie Wise's short, hairy legs. Yet, the series could easily have been cancelled when ITV viewers failed to respond to the original version, which featured Clunes sharing his flat with someone named Dermot, played by Harry Enfield. Indeed, it was only when the third series moved to the BBC and was then broadcast in a post-watershed slot--allowing writer Simon Nye greater freedom to explore his characters' saucier ruminations--that the show began to gain a significant audience. By then, of course, Morrissey had become firmly ensconced on the collective pizza-stained sofa, while more screen time was allocated to the boys' respective foils, Caroline Quentin and Leslie Ash. Often glibly dismissed as a lame-brained succession of gags about sex and flatulence, the later series not only featured great performances and sharp-as-nails writing but also sported a contemporary attitude that dared to go where angels, and certainly most other sitcoms, feared to tread. Or, as Gary was once moved to comment about soft-porn lesbian epic Love in a Women's Prison: "It's a serious study of repressed sexuality in a pressure-cooker environment." Series 3 includes: "Lovers" in which Gary becomes worried that he hasn't slept with enough women; "Bed" in which Dorothy and Gary experience problems in the boudoir ("What's the matter? We always have sex after I've cooked for us. That's why I do it."); "Casual Ties" in which a depressed Deborah decides to sell her flat and go travelling, while Tony fails to cheer her up by impersonating different types of Cheese; "Weekend" in which Tony gets a job at The Crown; "Cleaning Lady" in which Tony reconsiders his professional options ("I could be an escort." "What, a car?" asks Gary); "Marriage" in which Gary joins Dorothy for a candlelit dinner ("Why she couldn't find a restaurant with proper lighting I don't know"). --Clark Collis

Saturday Night Live - The Best Of Mike Myers | DVD | (05/04/2004)
from £21.31
| Saving you £-15.32 (N/A%)
| RRP The Best of Mike Myers is a compilation of sketches from his six seasons on the American show Saturday Night Live, and features the star in his pre-Austin Powers days appearing in various garbs and characters, though not as Powers himself. There are, however, two Wayne's World segments, Myers' other great cinematic triumph (in collaboration with Dana Carvey), in which he plays the zonked-out heavy-metal dude who presents a cable show from his basement. One features Aerosmith guesting, waylaid by Wayne's mum and given the tour of the house, or "walk of shame"; the other has Madonna, in a parody of her In Bed With... era. Other characters include Sprockets, a stern and Teutonic techno-obsessed host, and Lothar of the Hill People, an ancient chieftain. Considering he is Liverpool-born, Myers is happy to peddle some curious American stereotypes of the British: that they have bad teeth, as in the "Hedley & Wyche" sketch ("one tube lasts a lifetime") or that they all behave like characters from a Terry-Thomas movie. Among the featured guests in these sketches are Steve Martin, Tom Hanks (as Aerosmith's roadie), Nicole Kidman as a six-year-old girl, Roseanne Barr and Danny DeVito. Sometimes, as is SNL's wont, the sketches go on several minutes too long and lack sharpness, while the star guests don't always put in Oscar-winning performances. However, amid the self-indulgence there are a number of very funny moments. On the DVD: The Best of Mike Myers DVD is a straightforward transfer of the TV original with no extra features. --David Stubbs
