Epic Movie:Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer set their parodic sights on the largest genre of them all Hollywood's big-budget special effects-laden blockbuster franchise films. The story centers on four not-so-young orphans: one reared by a curator at the Louvre (where an albino assassin lurks); another a refugee from Mexican ""libre"" wrestling; the third a recent victim of snakes on her plane; and the fourth a ""normal"" resident of a mutant ""X""-community. The hapless quartet visits a chocolate factory where they stumble into an enchanted wardrobe that transports them to the land of Gnarnia (with a silent ""G""). There they meet a flamboyant pirate captain and earnest students of wizardry - and join forces with among others a wise-but-horny lion to defeat the evil White Bitch of Gnarnia. Date Movie:From the writers of Scary Movie comes a hilarious spoof of romantic comedies which focuses on the mishaps of the improbably named Grant Funkyerdoder (Adam Campbell) as he pursues his paramour Julia (Alyson Hannigan) to the concern of her parents...

Cara Buono (Mad Men, The Sopranos) stars as Joanne Schwartzbaum - a gloomy, glum and perpetually dissatisfied Brooklyn housewife who has been dragging her feet for far too long. She's drifted apart from her down-to-earth husband (David Lansbury), and her head's in the stars? After encountering cosmic forces in her own home, Joanne develops some kooky habits (think ˜fascination with dead fish'), and joins a UFO support group to help solve the mystery. There, she meets Abraham (Isaach De Bankolé), an émigré from the Ivory Coast who shares the same fan-shaped branding mark on his skin. The two quickly learn an undeniable truth: aliens are among us, and it's no fluke. With their support team behind them, Joanne and Abraham embark on an outlandish mission to foil their alien counterparts and defend the planet. There'll be sleuthing, romance, and a guy in a skin-tight bodysuit (Joel De La Fuente, Law and Order). This nutty sci-fi spoof from award-winning writer-director Barry Strugatz (Married to the Mob, She-Devil), is as unexpectedly meaningful as the aliens in Joanne's kitchen.

  • Forrest Gump [Blu-ray]Forrest Gump | Blu Ray | (06/10/2014) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £N/A

If you read the label on a box of chocolates you'll know exactly what you're gonna get. Life isn't like that in Forrest Gump, however, which is one of the reasons why this movie divided appreciative audiences from hard-hearted critics like few others before it. Audiences responded to the Frank Capra-style sentimentality of this warm-hearted tale of a good ol' American boy making his way in the world without ever losing his pure and simple innocence. Critics, however, were made uneasy by the apparently reactionary subtext to the parallel lives of Forrest and his girlfriend Jenny. Her fate, contrasted with his, suggests a triumph for plain ol' American values over dangerous freethinking hippies and liberals. Whether the movie is just unadulterated sentiment or right-wing propaganda, one thing at least was acknowledged by all: that Forrest Gump displays all the craftsmanship of one of Hollywood's most inventive directors and features a central performance from an actor renowned for his total commitment to every role. Thanks to Robert Zemeckis and Tom Hanks, even the most cynical critic will find it hard not to shed at least one tear by the end of this undeniably engrossing movie. The soundtrack is great, too. On the DVD: another good two-disc set gives fans of Gump and budding filmmakers alike plenty to enjoy. The anamorphic picture and Dolby Surround on Disc 1 do full justice to Zemeckis' vision, which is accompanied by two commentaries: one from the director, producer Steve Starkey and production designer Rick Carter, and another one from producer Wendy Finerman. Disc 2 has the usual making of documentary (30 mins), plus some neat featurettes on the production and sound design and the many special effects shots (including how they made Gary Sinise lose his legs). In addition there are some screen tests of Robin Wright and a very young Haley Joel (The Sixth Sense) Osment, plus trailers and a photo gallery. All in all this is a worthwhile package. --Mark Walker
