• From Other Worlds | DVD | (08/02/2016) from £4.99   |  Saving you £8.00 (160.32%)   |  RRP £12.99

Cara Buono (Mad Men, The Sopranos) stars as Joanne Schwartzbaum - a gloomy, glum and perpetually dissatisfied Brooklyn housewife who has been dragging her feet for far too long. She's drifted apart from her down-to-earth husband (David Lansbury), and her head's in the stars? After encountering cosmic forces in her own home, Joanne develops some kooky habits (think ˜fascination with dead fish'), and joins a UFO support group to help solve the mystery. There, she meets Abraham (Isaach De Bankolé), an émigré from the Ivory Coast who shares the same fan-shaped branding mark on his skin. The two quickly learn an undeniable truth: aliens are among us, and it's no fluke. With their support team behind them, Joanne and Abraham embark on an outlandish mission to foil their alien counterparts and defend the planet. There'll be sleuthing, romance, and a guy in a skin-tight bodysuit (Joel De La Fuente, Law and Order). This nutty sci-fi spoof from award-winning writer-director Barry Strugatz (Married to the Mob, She-Devil), is as unexpectedly meaningful as the aliens in Joanne's kitchen.

• Forrest Gump | Blu Ray | (06/10/2014) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £N/A

If you read the label on a box of chocolates you'll know exactly what you're gonna get. Life isn't like that in Forrest Gump, however, which is one of the reasons why this movie divided appreciative audiences from hard-hearted critics like few others before it. Audiences responded to the Frank Capra-style sentimentality of this warm-hearted tale of a good ol' American boy making his way in the world without ever losing his pure and simple innocence. Critics, however, were made uneasy by the apparently reactionary subtext to the parallel lives of Forrest and his girlfriend Jenny. Her fate, contrasted with his, suggests a triumph for plain ol' American values over dangerous freethinking hippies and liberals. Whether the movie is just unadulterated sentiment or right-wing propaganda, one thing at least was acknowledged by all: that Forrest Gump displays all the craftsmanship of one of Hollywood's most inventive directors and features a central performance from an actor renowned for his total commitment to every role. Thanks to Robert Zemeckis and Tom Hanks, even the most cynical critic will find it hard not to shed at least one tear by the end of this undeniably engrossing movie. The soundtrack is great, too. On the DVD: another good two-disc set gives fans of Gump and budding filmmakers alike plenty to enjoy. The anamorphic picture and Dolby Surround on Disc 1 do full justice to Zemeckis' vision, which is accompanied by two commentaries: one from the director, producer Steve Starkey and production designer Rick Carter, and another one from producer Wendy Finerman. Disc 2 has the usual making of documentary (30 mins), plus some neat featurettes on the production and sound design and the many special effects shots (including how they made Gary Sinise lose his legs). In addition there are some screen tests of Robin Wright and a very young Haley Joel (The Sixth Sense) Osment, plus trailers and a photo gallery. All in all this is a worthwhile package. --Mark Walker

• Not Another Teen Movie/American Pie | DVD | (28/07/2008) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £12.99

This box set features the following films: Not Another Teen Movie (Dir. Joel Gallen) (2001): In his directorial debut Joel Gallen spoofs the ever-popular teen genre - now in its extended form! The students of John Hughes High School live the plot lines of numerous teen flicks including: She's All That American Pie Ten Things I Hate About You and Sixteen Candles to name just a few. The most popular boy Jake Wyler (Chris Evans) has bet his friends that he can make Janey Briggs (Chyler Leigh) - the poor smart girl from the wrong side of the tracks - prom queen. Meanwhile her little brother is in pursuit of the most beautiful girl he's ever seen when he's not getting into trouble with his geeky friends. Of course a teen movie wouldn't be complete without a mean-spirited cheerleading captain a lovestruck best friend and a foreign exchange student all of whom have prominent roles in the film. Throw in a few guest appearances from familiar faces from some of the best-known teen movies of the 1980s along with remakes of songs from the same films - and even some word-for-word dialogue - and you have an amusing walk down memory lane for anyone who has a soft spot for the films of Hughes Crowe and the rest. American Movie (Dir. Paul Weitz) (1999): You'll never look at warm apple pie the same way again! American Pie takes a hysterical look at the goal of four unlucky in love high school friends who make the ultimate pact: lose their virginity by prom night. As they try to manipulate their way into the hearts of some of their classmates their plans often backfire with hilarity. One fails to score with the sexy foreign exchange student and then makes a last ditch effort with a band member who has an interesting way with her flute while another is so desperate he actually hires someone to give him a reputation.
